สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาแนวทางการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามในนวนิยายชุด A Series of Unfortunate Events เขียนโดย Lemony Snicket แปลโดย อาริตา พงศ์ธรานนท์ โดยศึกษาจากข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามที่มี 4 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) การอธิบายความหมายแบบตรงตัว 2) การอธิบายความหมายตามสถานการณ์ 3) การอธิบายความหมายด้วยการใช้ความหมายมากกว่าหนึ่งความหมาย และ 4) การอธิบายด้วยการหลากคำหรือการใช้คำที่ง่ายกว่าหรือซับซ้อนน้อยกว่า ทฤษฎีและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องที่ใช้ประกอบการศึกษา ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์ของ Christiane Nord ทฤษฎี Scene-and-frame Semantics ของ Charles J. Fillmore และแนวทางการแปลแบบตีความ (Interpretative Approach) ของ Jean Delisle โดยผู้วิจัยใช้ทฤษฎีดังกล่าวในการวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามว่าผู้แปลใช้วิธีการใดในการเลือกแปลข้อความลักษณะดังกล่าว หลังจากที่ได้นำทฤษฎีดังกล่าวข้างต้นมาวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลพบว่า ผู้แปลจำเป็นต้องวิเคราะห์ภาพ (Scene) ของต้นฉบับเพื่อให้เห็นภาพและความหมายที่ชัดเจนตามที่ผู้ประพันธ์ต้องการสื่อสาร ก่อนถ่ายทอดฉบับแปลโดยใช้รูปแบบ (Frame) ที่ทำให้เห็นภาพเช่นเดียวกันกับต้นฉบับ ซึ่งในการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามทั้ง 4 รูปแบบ บางครั้งผู้แปลไม่สามารถแปลตรงตัวได้ จึงจำเป็นต้องปรับรูปแบบทางภาษาให้แตกต่างจากต้นฉบับโดยยึดความหมายเป็นหลักเพื่อให้ผู้อ่านฉบับแปลเห็นภาพเช่นเดียวกับผู้อ่านต้นฉบับ กรณีที่ผู้แปลไม่สามารถแปลแบบตรงตัวได้ ผู้แปลจึงใช้วิธีอื่นในการแก้ปัญหาการแปล เช่น การแปลโดยการอธิบายขยายความ หรือการเลือกที่จะตัดเนื้อความบางส่วนเพื่อให้ข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามเป็นเหตุเป็นผลในภาษาไทย

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นด้วยวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะของวัจนลีลา วิเคราะห์ปัญหา การแปล รวมถึงแก้ปัญหาโดยการหาแนวทางการแปล เพื่อถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาในนวนิยายอิงประวัติศาสตร์เรื่อง Days Without End ของเซบาสเตียน แบร์รี อันไม่เป็นไปตามขนบการประพันธ์นวนิยายบางส่วน ให้ได้บทแปลที่ทำหน้าที่ทั้งสื่อความหมาย และให้อรรถรสแก่ผู้อ่านได้ใกล้เคียงกับต้นฉบับ การถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาเริ่มจากการศึกษาแนวคิดและระเบียบวิธีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการศึกษาวัจนลีลาประเภทต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีวัจนลีลา ของ พอล ซิมป์สัน (Paul Simpson) ทฤษฎีวัจนลีลาเชิงวจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์ ของ เอลิซาเบธ แบล็ค (Elizabeth Black) และแนวทางการแปลวัจนลีลา ของ ฌ็อง โบส-ไบเออร์ (Jean Boase-Beier) รวมถึงลักษณะการประกอบสร้างทางภาษาเพื่อสร้างความ โดดเด่นให้กับวัจนลีลา และผลงานด้านการแปลวัจนลีลาที่มีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกันอันปรากฎในวรรณกรรมเรื่องอื่น หลังจากที่ผู้วิจัยได้รวบรวมแนวคิด ระเบียบวิธี และทฤษฎีข้างต้นแล้วนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์และการแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลา พบว่าความรู้ที่ได้จากการศึกษาเหล่านั้นสามารถช่วยแก้ปัญหาการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาจากภาษาของต้นฉบับให้เป็นภาษาปลายทางได้เป็นผลสาเร็จ อย่างไรก็ตาม ยังต้องอาศัยองค์ประกอบด้านความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์และบริบททางสังคมที่เป็นฉากหลังของ นวนิยายอย่างละเอียดลึกซึ้ง เพื่อช่วยในการทำความเข้าใจเนื้อหาและสารของผู้ประพันธ์อันสะท้อนผ่านวัจนลีลาเหล่านั้นให้ได้ดียิ่งขึ้น

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการแปลประโยคเคล็ฟต์ที่ใช้สรรพนาม ‘it’ ประเภท Dummy subject ในตัวบทนวนิยาย จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย และเพื่อประมวลกลวิธีการแปลจากกรณีศึกษาเรื่อง The Murder of Roger Ackroyd ของอกาธา คริสตี้ และหนังสือแปลเรื่อง คดีฆาตกรรมโรเจอร์ แอ็กครอยด์ โดยพิรุณรัตน์ เนื่องจากภาษาไทยไม่มีโครงสร้างประโยคที่เทียบเท่ากันทางความหมายกับโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์ จึงอาจเป็นปัญหาการแปลที่สำคัญได้ งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งเน้นที่ประโยคเคล็ฟต์ที่ใช้สรรพนาม ‘it’ ประเภท Dummy subject จานวน 63 ประโยค และกลวิธีการแปลสองระดับ ได้แก่ ระดับโครงสร้างประโยคและระดับคำ ผลการวิเคราะห์เชิงปริมาณสรุปได้ว่า กลวิธีการแปลระดับโครงสร้างประโยคใช้การปรับโครงสร้างประโยคใหม่จำนวน 60 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 95.24 และใช้การรักษาโครงสร้างประโยคตามต้นฉบับจำนวน 3 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 4.76 ในการปรับโครงสร้างประโยคใหม่พบว่าผู้แปลใช้การหาประธาน หรือการปรับส่วนใด ส่วนหนึ่งของประโยคเป็นประธานมากที่สุด จำนวน 44 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 73.33 รองลงมาได้แก่การเปลี่ยนประโยคเป็นวลี ส่วนกลวิธีการแปลระดับคำใช้การเติมคำเน้นมากที่สุด จำนวน 17 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 26.98 รองลงมาได้แก่การเติมลักษณนาม ผลการวิเคราะห์เชิงคุณภาพสรุปได้ว่า การแปลประโยคเคล็ฟต์ในนวนิยายเรื่องนี้ นักแปลใช้กลวิธี การปรับบทแปลระดับโครงสร้างประโยคและระดับคำร่วมกัน โดยไม่รักษารูปแบบโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์เสมอไป แต่ยังคงรักษาหน้าที่และเจตนาในการสื่อสารของโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์ ซึ่งสะท้อนให้เห็นแนวทาง การแปลที่นักแปลอาศัยการตีความและทำความเข้าใจความหมายโดยนัยที่สื่อผ่านการใช้ประโยคเคล็ฟต์เป็นหลักก่อน แล้วจึงถ่ายทอดความหมายนั้นเป็นภาษาปลายทางอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ สอดคล้องกับแนวทางการแปลแบบตีความที่เดอลีลส์ (1988) นำเสนอ ทฤษฎี Skopostheorie ที่ไร้ส์และแฟร์เมียร์ (1984) นำเสนอ และทฤษฎีวัจนกรรมที่เฮอนิกช์และคุสเมาล์ (1982) นำมาใช้ในการแปล

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางการแปลตัวบทในพิพิธภัณฑ์ และแปลตัวบทต้นฉบับบางส่วนในพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อการศึกษาวัดหนังราชวรวิหาร โดยผู้วิจัยเลือกแปลป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บรรยายวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดงของพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อการศึกษาวัดหนังราชวรวิหาร รวมทั้งหมด ๑๙๗ ป้าย คือป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บริเวณชั้น ๑ ของนิทรรศการจัดแสดงเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับวิถีชีวิตชาวสวนของชุมชนวัดหนังในอดีต และป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บริเวณชั้น ๒ ของนิทรรศการซึ่งจัดแสดงเรื่องยาแผนโบราณของวัดหนัง ผลการศึกษา พบว่าการแปลป้ายแสดงคำบรรยายวัตถุที่จัดแสดงในพิพิธภัณฑ์ นอกจากจะต้องพิจารณาเลือกใช้คำศัพท์ที่เหมาะสมกับกลุ่มผู้อ่านในวัฒนธรรมปลายทางแล้ว ยังต้องพิจารณาวัตถุที่นำมา จัดแสดงประกอบด้วย เนื่องจากวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดงบางชิ้นแม้จะมีชื่อเรียกเหมือนกับคำในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง แต่ลักษณะเฉพาะของวัตถุชิ้นนั้นไม่เหมือนกับวัตถุในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง และวัตถุที่นำมา จัดแสดงบางชิ้นไม่พบในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง โดยผู้วิจัยพบว่าการใช้แนวทางในการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทต้นฉบับ ของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด ทฤษฎีของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ก ทฤษฎีหลากรูปแบบ ทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับการแปลพิพิธภัณฑ์ (Museum Translation) และความรู้เกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแปลพิพิธภัณฑ์ สามารถนำมาใช้ในการศึกษาตัวบทและวิเคราะห์ปัญหาที่พบในการแปลป้ายของพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อวัดหนังฯ นำไปสู่แนวทางการแปลป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์ซึ่งผู้วิจัยจึงจำเป็นต้องมีการปรับเปลี่ยนคำศัพท์ และโครงสร้างประโยคในภาษาปลายทางที่ใช้ในการแปลใหม่ เพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดง และจะสามารถทำให้ผู้อ่านได้รับความเข้าใจที่ถูกต้องมากที่สุด

This paper presents a quantitative fine-grained manual evaluation approach to comparing the performance of different machine translation (MT) systems. We build upon the well-established Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) error taxonomy and implement a novel method that assesses whether the differences in performance for MQM error types between different MT systems are statistically significant. We conduct a case study for English-to- Croatian, a language direction that involves translating into a morphologically rich language, for which we compare three MT systems belonging to different paradigms: pure phrase-based, factored phrase-based and neural. Pairs of rhyming words/phrases in Chinese and Shona were investigated in an attempt to bring out the effect of such words to the teaching and learning of Chinese language. The pairs were grouped in accordance to their effects and nature of relationship. The selection of the words was based on samples obtained during classroom teaching. Students’ reaction to Chinese words automatically tells the story of the effect of such rhyming words. Black women wearing fabulous braids are a striking feature of the Afro-diasporic cultural landscape. However, the braiders and salon owners who enable this aesthetic engineering are seldom acknowledged. This dissertation investigates the experience and role of Caribbean and West and Central African women in the hair braiding industry, a rapidly growing business in the U.S. I address the complexity of these women’s multiple social roles and the multiple consciousness (King, 1988) associated with their demographic characteristics (color, ethnicity, gender, nationality, and immigrant status). Luigi Pirandello’s first novel, L’Esclusa, written in 1893, but not published in its definitive edition until 1927, straddles two literary worlds: that of the realistic style of the Italian veristi, and something new, a style and approach to narrative that anticipates the theory of writing Pirandello lays out in his long essay L’Umorismo, as well as the kinds of experimental writing that one associates with early-20^th-century modernism in general, and with Pirandello’s later work in particular. Based on the formal and functional perspectives espoused in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the main purpose of this thesis was to investigate the extent to which such lexico-grammatical features as lexical density, choice of nominal groups, and grammatical metaphor are used in ESL texts to scaffold target language proficiency levels. Of the number of lexico-grammatical metafunctions and their functional constituents, interpersonal metafunctional categories were analyzed from these three functional features in this thesis in order to reveal the ways in which interpersonal categories and the lexico-grammatical features are correlated as the level of difficulty of each text increases.

This article provides an overview of the historical presence of foreign languages in Lebanon, focusing on language contact from the eighteenth century to date. This research is an explorative study into the user expectations of interpreters in the domains of Patent Litigation, Public Health, and Cultural Heritage in Thailand. The study attempts to determine the importance of the accurate interpretation of terms in these highly-specialized fields with specific technical (in the case of court and medical interpreting) and cultural terminology. The researcher also attempts to identify user preferences for extra-linguistic features in interpreters. Results show that participants rated the delivery of the key message as higher priority than the translation of terminology. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เป็นศึกษาการแปลวาทกรรมความถูกต้องเชิงการเมืองในตัวบทคัดสรรจากเรื่อง Politically Correct Bedtime Stories ของ เจมส์ ฟินน์ การ์เนอร์ สมมติฐานในการวิจัยคือ นอกจากทฤษฎีการแปลที่เกี่ยวข้องแล้ว การแปลวาทกรรมความถูกต้องเชิงการเมืองในตัวบทคัดสรรจากเรื่อง Politically Correct Bedtime Stories ของ เจมส์ ฟินน์ การ์เนอร์ ควรอาศัยทฤษฎีวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์ (Discourse Analysis) ของ ปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ค ทฤษฎี Interpretive Approach ของ ฌอง เดอลีล แนวทางการแปลทางสตรีนิยมของ มาซาดิเออร์-เคนนี่, ลูอีส ฟอน โฟลโทว์, เชอร์รี ไซมอน, แนวคิดเสียดสีของ พอล ซิมป์สัน, แนวคิดแฝงนัยของ ลินดา ฮัตเชิน เพื่อแปลตัวบทคัดสรรจำนวน 26 หน้า ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ปัญหาที่พบในการแปลวาทกรรมความถูกต้องเชิงการเมืองในตัวบทมีดังนี้ (1) การแปลคำสร้างใหม่ (2) การแปลคำเป็นกลางทางเพศสภาพ (3) การแปลคำคุณศัพท์ที่ไม่ใส่อคติ (4) การแปลข้อความเสียดสีที่อยู่ในทำเนียบภาษา (register) ที่เป็นทางการ ผิดจากบริบท กลวิธีการแปลที่ผู้วิจัยใช้ คือ (1) แปลการเสียดสี คำแฝงนัย ให้แปลกแยกชัดเจน โดดเด่นออกมาจากตัวบทตามแนวคิดของ พอล ซิมป์สัน และ ลินดา ฮัตเชิน (2) ใส่คำนำผู้แปล ตามกลวิธีของ ลูอีส ฟอน โฟลโทว์

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาทฤษฎีการแปลและแนวทางการแปลวรรณกรรม เพื่อถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาของตัวละครเอกในเรื่อง Room ของเอ็มมา โดโนฮิว ผู้วิจัยมีจุดประสงค์ที่จะถ่ายทอดบทแปลที่มีสมมูลภาพทางความหมายและอรรถรสเทียบเคียงกับต้นฉบับ และหาวิธีการแก้ไขปัญหาการแปลลักษณะภาษาและวัจนลีลาที่ผิดแปร่ง ซึ่งเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของตัวละครเอกในเรื่อง จากการศึกษาครั้งนี้พบว่า แนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด และแนวทางการวิเคราะห์องค์ประกอบนวนิยายของ คาร์ล เอ็ม ทอมลินสัน และแครอล ลินช์-บราวน์ ช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยสามารถวิเคราะห์ตัวบทต้นฉบับได้ละเอียดและครบถ้วนมากยิ่งขึ้น ทำให้ผู้วิจัยเข้าใจสารที่ผู้ส่งสารต้องการสื่อก่อนทำการถ่ายทอดไปสู่บทแปลในภาษาปลายทาง แนวทางการแปลแบบตีความของฌอง เดอลีล ช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยเข้าใจความหมายที่แท้จริงในวาทกรรมนั้นๆ ซึ่งทำให้ถ่ายทอดความหมายได้อย่างถูกต้องและเหมาะสม นอกจากนี้ยังมีความสำคัญมากในการตรวจสอบบทแปล ทฤษฎีพัฒนาการทางสติปัญญา ของ ชอง เพียเจต์ ในขั้นก่อนปฏิบัติการคิด ของเด็กตั้งแต่อายุ 2-7 ปี ช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยเข้าใจสภาพอปกติของตัวละครที่สื่อออกมาผ่านทางภาษาและลักษณะความคิด ซึ่งช่วยในการถ่ายทอดลักษณะนั้นๆ เป็นภาษาปลายทางได้เหมาะสมยิ่งขึ้น และทฤษฎีวัจนลีลาของ อมรา ประสิทธิ์รัฐสินธุ์ ช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยถ่ายทอดอรรถรสและความหมายของบทแปลให้เทียบเคียงและมีสมมูลภาพกับต้นฉบับมากที่สุด ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่า ความรู้ แนวทาง และทฤษฎีข้างต้น เป็นปัจจัยที่สำคัญมากในการสร้างงานแปลที่มีคุณภาพมากที่สุดและตรงตามวัตถุประสงค์ที่ผู้วิจัยตั้งไว้

Humans’ attraction to fiction is believed to respond to a search for pleasure, entertainment or enjoyment. Readers and film viewers engage with books and movies to participate in an experience that will provide some kind of gratification. However, the mechanisms that lead to engagement with written and audiovisual narratives are highly complex and not yet fully understood.

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาการแปลนวนิยายซึ่งใช้รูปแบบการนำเสนอเป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญในการถ่ายทอดสารในต้นฉบับ โดยนำนวนิยายเรื่อง Beloved มาเป็นกรณีศึกษา เพื่อแสวงหาแนวทางการแปลและวิธีการแก้ปัญหาในการแปลที่เหมาะสมกับตัวบทลักษณะดังกล่าว กรอบทฤษฎีหลักซึ่งนำมาใช้ในการศึกษาตัวบทต้นฉบับ ได้แก่ การแปลวรรณกรรมตามแนวคิดของฟอร์ตูนาโต อิสราแอล และทฤษฎีภาษาศาสตร์สังคม นอกจากนี้ ผู้วิจัยยังได้นำเอาทฤษฎีการแปลพื้นฐานอื่นๆ มาประกอบการศึกษาตัวบทต้นฉบับด้วย ซึ่งได้แก่ ทฤษฎีวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์ ทฤษฎีการแปลแบบยึดความหมาย การแปลวรรณกรรมตามแนวคิดของวัลยา วิวัฒน์ศร และทฤษฎีวัจนกรรม หลังจากที่ได้นำทฤษฎีข้างต้นมาประยุกต์ใช้แล้ว พบว่า แนวทางการแปลวรรณกรรมของฟอร์ตูนาโต อิสราแอลและทฤษฎีภาษาศาสตร์สังคมสามารถนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ร่วมกันในการแปลและแก้ปัญหาที่พบในตัวบทประเภทนี้ได้เป็นอย่างดี
