Background: Interleukin-22 is a cytokine involved in mucosal immunity, whereas interleukin-22 binding protein is a soluble receptor that can potently block interleukin-22. The role of interleukin-22 and interleukin-22 binding protein in trauma remains unclear. This study investigates whether IL-22 levels are associated with intubation in patients with trauma. We hypothesized interleukin-22 levels would be lower in intubated patients. Methods: Plasma samples were prospectively obtained in the trauma bay at consecutive Level 1 activations from November 2021 to November 2022. Pelvic pain during penetration (PPDP) has been described using various diagnostic terms, including vaginismus, dyspareunia, and vulvodynia. The most recent and comprehensive classification is Genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder (GPPPD) which is characterized by psychological distress associated with pain during or in anticipation of vaginal penetration (DSM-5-TR; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022). Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can contribute to changes in cognitive and emotional functioning, quality of life, and psychosocial reintegration. Chronic pain is a common consequence of TBI which can uniquely impact such outcomes. A history of sexual trauma places women at a high risk for sexual dysfunction and other health sequelae, yet the influence of ovarian hormones in this population is poorly understood. This dissertation tested the theory that the effects of ovarian hormones are mediated by cognitive approach-avoidance systems to shape sexual well-being, and that this process is moderated by sexual trauma history. This was investigated across three studies examining the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraceptive use, and menopause. Advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide the opportunity to investigate research questions that have been left unanswered. In the cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and carotid artery atherosclerosis, MRI is a resource for non-invasively viewing the phenomena taking place. Additionally, potential interventions and treatments can be observed without harm to the subject. This dissertation expands the understanding of two preclinical applications of MRI: traumatic brain injury and carotid artery atherosclerosis in mouse models.

Background and Aims: Non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) is a common cause of hospitalizations, with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) being the mainstay treatment. However, there is a lack of high-level evidence to show if adjunctive medical therapy (somatostatin and its analogs) can improve outcomes. Prenatal substance exposure (PSE) is a known risk factor for negative birth outcomes and long-term health outcomes like neurodevelopmental problems. Children in foster care have increased exposure to PSE and higher proportions of developmental delay compared with the general population. It is unclear whether differences still exist among developmental delay screening among children in foster care with and without PSE.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the applicability of the Revised Risk Analysis Index (RAI-Rev) in orthopaedic trauma and compare the predictive discrimination for the RAI-Rev and the 5-Item Modified Frailty Index (mFI-5) for 30-day postoperative outcomes.

DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study.

SETTING: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement database was used.

PATIENT SELECTION: All patients aged 18 or older who underwent surgical treatment for forearm, humerus, pelvis, acetabulum, femur, tibia, and hindfoot fractures from 2015 to 2020 were included.

This case report and literature review describe an intracranial injury resulting from a handcrafted arrow that required emergent surgical management in a patient treated at a public hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa. The authors are members of the non-profit organizations Chunilal Initiative and Kisumu Intuitive, which deliver charitable neurosurgical care to the region on a quarterly basis. This case report describes the clinical presentation and treatment following an exploratory ingestion of extended release (ER) guanfacine in a healthy toddler. Guanfacine, an alpha-2a agonist, can cause transient hypertension as it moves from the serum into the CNS where it causes the more commonly seen central nervous system (CNS) depression, hypotension, and bradycardia. Persistent hypertension requiring intravenous (IV) vasodilatory medication is a rare and life-threatening complication of an alpha-2 agonist with only one other published report. This case report re-emphasizes and further expands available literature on this rarely reported effect.

This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology of hip dislocations in the United States (U.S.) from 1990 to 2019. Methods This study is a descriptive retrospective epidemiological study. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database was used to collect epidemiological data on hip dislocation in the U.S. from 1990 to 2019. Data included years lived with disability (YLDs), prevalence, and incidence rates per 100,000 people. Differences in concussion symptoms, presentation, and follow-up care exist when comparing demographics. The aim of this study was to explore SRC within the pediatric population. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients ≤ 18 years old diagnosed with SRC at a New Orleans stand-alone children's hospital from January 2007 to December 2021 was performed. This perspective article explores the integration of positive psychology interventions (PPIs) and spirituality in therapy to foster meaning and well-being in older adults. It highlights exercises such as the positive introduction, positive legacy, character strengths, mindfulness, mindful-based yoga, and a manifestation prayer journaling. The interventions presented are tools to support older adults that may experience depression, difficult life transitions, and the search for renewed meaning. Therapists who integrate PPIs and spirituality into therapy can promote a holistic, non-pathological approach to treatment.
