The “Cushion Effect” Revisited:, George A. Flores, Annelyn Torres-Reveron, Raul Barreda

Research Symposium

Background: It is known the pattern and severity of injuries sustained during a motor vehicle accident depend on many variables. An interesting avenue for research is obesity as a positive or negative modifier for injury distribution patterns in MVA. We hypothesize that body mass index (BMI) will influence MVC related injury patterns.

Methods: We queried STRAC data for DHR - Edinburg for the years 2014 to 2018 using CPT codes for MVC/MVA, IS > 8, age 15 - 64. Interactions between injury location, BMI, seatbelt and gender were analyzed.

Results: We had 191 detailed crashes, we found increasing age to be …

Diaphragmatic Rupture Due To Closed Thoracobdominal Trauma: A Case Report, Juan Rosales Martínez, Manlio F. Lara Duck, Antonio Gutiérrez Sierra, Netzahualcoyotl Mayek Pérez 2023 Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social

Diaphragmatic Rupture Due To Closed Thoracobdominal Trauma: A Case Report, Juan Rosales Martínez, Manlio F. Lara Duck, Antonio Gutiérrez Sierra, Netzahualcoyotl Mayek Pérez

Research Symposium

Background. Diaphragmatic injuries (DI) represent less than 1% of traumatic injuries; they are a marker of severe trauma due to associated injuries, although they often go undiagnosed as they remain hidden. If undetected, delayed herniation and strangulation of the abdominal organs into the chest cavity will result as the defect in the diaphragm is not repaired. DI occurs from penetrating or blunt trauma. The former occurs in approximately 67% of cases; direct injury to the diaphragm caused by automobile accidents has been reported. The remaining third is due to falls and crush injuries. Blunt trauma causes larger tears, even bilateral. …

About Dying And Death: Thanatology's Place In Medical Curriculum, Jill Dombroski 2023 Western University

About Dying And Death: Thanatology's Place In Medical Curriculum, Jill Dombroski

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study explored how healthcare providers engage in advance care planning and end-of-life care conversations. The research explored what shapes their understanding and the extent to which concepts from thanatology they intuitively bring in, explicitly bring in, and maybe fail to recognize. To achieve this, constructivist grounded theory (CGT) methodology guided the design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of the findings, which allowed for iteration across interviews and analysis with existing theories and data in the literature. The CGT design encouraged further engagement with the literature in an ongoing iterative fashion as well as with the analysis of the data. …

Poverty And Commercial Surrogacy In India: An Intersectional Analytical Approach, Sheela Suryanarayanan 2023 University of Hyderabad, India

Poverty And Commercial Surrogacy In India: An Intersectional Analytical Approach, Sheela Suryanarayanan

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The destination and source countries for commercial surrogacy match world patterns of inequality. India, Nepal, Thailand, Mexico, and Cambodia banned commercial surrogacy, moving the market to other less-developed countries in South Africa and South America. India had a commercial surrogacy boom until exploitative factors led to the passage of the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill in 2019, which banned the practice. This paper examines surrogacy's monetary, health, and emotional effects on 45 surrogate mothers in Gujarat State, India. The study revealed that a majority (63%) of the very poor women remained very poor post-surgery. Surrogate mothers in poor households had to do …

How Did That Get There? A Case Series Of Adolescent Foreign Bodies, Justin Ian Hanson, Paul Bomar, Sarah Kleist, Denver Rogalla, Lori Crihfield, Scott Gutovitz

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Pediatric foreign bodies (FBs) come in many shapes and sizes, and the method by which they enter the body can greatly impact the level of acuity at presentation. Most FBs in children are found in those younger than 5 years old, but the following 3 cases were found in adolescent patients.

Case Presentation

We report on 3 adolescent patients who presented to a single community-based emergency department with the chief complaint of abdominal pain and were found to have complications of abdominal FBs. If undiagnosed, the initial indolent courses of FBs can lead to serious complications, as shown in …

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause progressive neuropathology that leads to chronic impairments, creating a need for biomarkers to detect and monitor this condition to improve outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the ability of data-driven analysis of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion imaging (NODDI) to develop biomarkers to infer symptom severity and determine whether they outperform conventional T1-weighted imaging.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A machine learning-based model was developed using a dataset of hybrid diffusion imaging of patients with chronic traumatic brain injury. We first extracted the useful features from the hybrid diffusion imaging …

Trauma-Informed Care Pa-S Pilot Program Evaluation, Karyn Furcolo, Raya Patel, Mihail Petrov, Leslie Rowland

Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies Capstone Presentations (Center City)

Background

Trauma stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, creates a fight-or-flight response through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, release of cortisol.1 Repeated stress leads to dysregulation of this response, which can lead to altered stress susceptibility and the inability to cope with stress.2 A trauma-informed approach encourages the provision of care to be based on knowledge and understanding of trauma and its widespread implications on patients lives.3

- Rather than asking "what is wrong with you," trauma-informed care encourages providers to ask "what happened to you?"5

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Globally close to 70% of the general population has experienced at least one traumatic life event (TLE). Although child and adulthood exposure to TLEs is considered a risk factor for the subsequent development of psychosis, few studies have examined the association between trauma and psychosis in the African population.

We sought to explore the association between TLEs and psychosis in patients with psychotic disorders (N = 254) and individuals without (N = 254). The participants were matched by age and sex. The study was conducted at a national referral hospital, the Life Events Checklist for DSM-5 (LEC-5) was used to …

Effect Of Confusion Assessment Scores On Identifying Delirium In Intensive Care Patients, Kayla Jacobs 2023 University of Missouri-St. Louis

Effect Of Confusion Assessment Scores On Identifying Delirium In Intensive Care Patients, Kayla Jacobs

Dissertations

Delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) patients can lead to increased length of stay in the hospital, increased risk of complications, increased polypharmacy, family distress and increased rate of mortality (Vasilevskis et al., 2018). Research has shown that addressing modifiable risk factors can improve survival rate by up to 15%, and routine screening for delirium in ICU patients leads to decreased patient anxiety, reduced in-hospital mortality, early recognition, and treatment of delirium (Krewulak et al., 2021 ; Vasilevskis et al., 2018). This quality improvement project used evidence-based intervention to increase accurate documentation of the confusion assessment method in the ICU …
