Comparing Efficacy Of Denosumab To Bisphosphonates In Fragility Fractures, Ronald Toledo Cardoso
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones with decreased bone mineral density and bone mass, leading to poor bone quality/structure, increasing the risk of fragility fractures. Pharmacological treatment is recommended to decrease risk of fractures. Current first line treatment is with bisphosphonates; however, alternative treatment includes denosumab. Both bisphosphonates and denosumab are antiresorptive drugs but differ in mechanism of action. Bisphosphonates remain as first line treatment.
Purpose: The purpose of this literature review is aimed at the PICO question in adults with osteoporosis, what is the efficacy of denosumab compared to bisphosphonates in decreasing the risk of …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Objective: To develop a valid and reliable instrument for measuring attitudes toward osteopathic medicine.
Methods: Participants included 5,669 first-year students from 33 U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine, who completed an online survey at the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year. Using data from the nationwide Project in Osteopathic Medical Education and Empathy, we developed a 13-item instrument: Attitudes Toward Osteopathic Medicine Scale (ATOMS) and demonstrated the validity and reliability of its scores. The social desirability response bias was controlled in statistical analyses.
Results: The corrected item-total score correlations were all positive and statistically significant, and the effect sizes of item …

Trends And Disparities In Osteoarthritis Prevalence Among Us Adults, 2005–2018, Yingke Xu, Qing Wu
Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine Faculty Research
Studies reporting trends and disparities of osteoarthritis (OA) in the United States are limited. We aimed to examine trends and disparities of OA prevalence among US adults, from 2005 to 2018. Continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005–2006 to 2017–2018 were analyzed. Age-adjusted and self-reported OA prevalence, stratified by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES), was calculated separately for men and women. The linear trend and the association between the survey cycles and OA prevalence were assessed. Age-adjusted and self-reported OA prevalence linearly increased in the seven survey cycles (both Plinear trend ≤ 0.0002) in men and …

Fusion Versus Fixation In Complex Comminuted C3-Type Tibial Pilon Fractures: A Systematic Review., Yash P Chaudhry, Efstratios Papadelis, Hunter Hayes, Philip F Stahel, Erik A Hasenboehler
Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research
BACKGROUND: Comminuted intra-articular tibial pilon fractures can be challenging to manage, with high revision rates and poor functional outcomes. This study reviewed [1] treatment, complications, and clinical outcomes in studies of complex comminuted tibial pilon fractures (type AO43-C3); and [2] primary ankle arthrodesis as a management option for these types of complex injuries.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed on PubMed from 1990 to 2020 to determine complications and outcomes after staged fracture fixation and primary ankle joint arthrodesis for comminuted C3-type tibial pilon fractures. The search was conducted in compliance with the PRISMA guidelines, using the following MeSH …

Background: Fragility fractures are often sentinel events in documenting new cases of osteoporosis. Numerous analyses have demonstrated low rates of adequate osteoporosis evaluation and treatment following primary fragility fractures. The purpose of this study was to quantify the incidence of primary fragility fractures in America and the rates of osteoporosis screening and management before and after fracture. Methods: A retrospective review of the PearlDiver database was conducted using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) and ICD, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) and Current Procedural Terminology codes. Patients who were 60 to 80 years of age and had primary fragility fractures …

It is estimated that in the near future there will be a shortage of physicians available to keep up with the needs of a growing older population. To try to account for this, medical schools are expanding class sizes and new schools are being created. While both allopathic and osteopathic schools are expanding, osteopathic schools are doing so a much faster rate. Unfortunately, it seems many students enter their undergraduate careers unaware of osteopathic medicine despite having an interest in medical school. Undergraduate student interest in becoming a medical doctor continues to rise, but so too does the difficulty of …

Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) is a set of osteopathic techniques that involves manipulation of the musculoskeletal system using the hands. It offers a supplement to standard modes of diagnosis and treatment, and is a key component of the osteopathic holistic approach to medicine.
Despite growing numbers of osteopathic physicians in the United States, OMT continues to be an underutilized asset in a plethora of medical conditions. With the merger of osteopathic and allopathic residency programs, restructuring of standardized curricula to a pass/fail format, and further changes uniting the two tracks of physician education, OMT remains one of the few facets …
