My Boompa was my mother's father, and my beloved grandfather. He passed away this April just after his 85th birthday. He, and the rest of the family, thought he would make it to at least 100. Boompa was one of the greatest people I will ever meet. Yea, sure, a lot of people say that, but I really mean it. He was the most kind, genuine, empathetic, hardworking man, always taking care of others first. This photo is a picture of the eucalyptus and pussy willows that were in the floral arrangement that laid over his coffin during his services. …

For us to truly succeed in our chosen work of helping and healing, we must succeed in listening deeply to ourselves and to others--listening to the voices of our hearts. Without this wholeness, we become shells of ourselves and cannot be fully present for others in their healing. I wrote this poem in celebration of my best friend and partner, Beth. During our 43 years together, our oneness has given me the courage and creativity needed to work in the service of others far beyond what I could have ever achieved alone. She has helped me to laugh and to …
Historical And Cross-Cultural Perspectives On Parkinson's Disease, 2018 University of Kentucky
Historical And Cross-Cultural Perspectives On Parkinson's Disease, Lee Xenakis Blonder
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder, affecting up to 10 million people worldwide according to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. Epidemiological and genetic studies show a preponderance of idiopathic cases and a subset linked to genetic polymorphisms of a familial nature. Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda recognized and treated the illness that Western Medicine terms PD millennia ago, and descriptions of Parkinson’s symptomatology by Europeans date back 2000 years to the ancient Greek physician Galen. However, the Western nosological classification now referred to in English as “Parkinson’s disease” and the description of symptoms that define it, are accredited to …

Original Parts: Aging And Reckoning With Cystic Fibrosis Related Kidney Disease, Alexandra Ch Nowakowski
Patient Experience Journal
Kidney disease increasingly impacts people with cystic fibrosis (CF) as adult patients continue to survive longer. Yet the literature on CF related kidney disease focuses little on amplifying the voices of people aging with the condition. This article presents perspectives on CF related kidney disease from a medical sociologist who is themselves managing these issues. It (1) gives an overview of relevant literature and trends in epidemiological data on kidney disease and CF, (2) details the author’s own process of adjusting to progressive changes in renal function, and (3) outlines opportunities for clinicians to make a positive impact for patients …

Androgenic Alopecia; The Risk–Benefit Ratio Of Finasteride, David L. Rowland, Ion G. Motofei, Ioana Păunică, Petrișor Banu, Mihaela F. Nistor, Stana Păunică, Vlad D. Constantin
Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences
Finasteride is currently approved and largely used as a therapeutic option for androgenetic alopecia. Apparently a safe drug and effective at the onset of its application, several concerns have since appeared over the years regarding the frequency and magnitude of finasteride adverse effects, which in some cases appear irreversible even after drug termination.
This paper discusses the use of finasteride for androgenic alopecia from two distinct perspectives. On the one hand, androgenic alopecia is a condition that especially affects a person’s self-image and esteem, aspects that are subjectively-constructed and thus relative and changeable. On the other hand, this condition involves …

Taken in the Back Bay of Boston on a sunny early spring morning. I wanted to remember the moment that this photo was taken. I remember I was so sick of winter (as I usually am), and it was a gorgeous sunny morning. I can still feel the sun on my back, making me almost (almost) warm enough to want to take off my fuzzy coat. The sun was shining on my partner and me as we walked hand and hand down the street. We stopped by an antique shop, as my partner is apt to do, and we happened …

A patient with diabetes is two to three times more likely to be depressed than the general population. Furthermore, the combination of diabetes and depression is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, research has shown that treatment for depression does not correlate with lower HbA1c levels or a decrease in morbidity and mortality. Recently, a body of evidence has shown that increased HbA1c levels and depression are associated with the emotional burden of managing diabetes. The emotional burden is caused by the constant behavioral and mental demands of managing the disease and the worry and fear of the impending …

The review of the literature on IM analyzed studies in primary care settings in all parts of the world. Definitions of IM and CAM are evaluated. Defining what IM is and how to incorporate this approach in …
