PURPOSE: A growing number of research studies have explored the potential effects of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on brain physiology as well as clinical effects particularly related to stress and anxiety. However, there currently are limited studies showing functional changes during different frequencies of stimulation and laterality effects transcutaneous auricular VNS (TaVNS). In this study, we evaluated whether TaVNS alters functional connectivity in the brain of healthy controls. We hypothesized that TaVNS would significantly alter connectivity in areas involved with emotional processing and regulation including the limbic areas, insula, frontal lobe regions, and cerebellum.

Tiburón is a small fishing village in Haiti with a clinic overseen by the Oblate missionaries and the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP). This village was hugely impacted by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, leading to increased health care demands. The clinic was inaccessible from the furthest parts of the village and lacked basic medication supplies and adequate manpower. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an immunologic syndrome characterized by excessive inflammation and tissue injury due to uncontrolled activation of the phagocytic system. The underlying mechanism is a lack of downregulation of activated macrophages and lymphocytes by natural killer and T cells. Unfortunately, the diagnosis is often delayed or missed due to the rarity of the disease, decreased awareness, and clinical picture variability. Heterozygous Hemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disorder that increases iron absorption. Carriers of the C282Y HFE gene mutation have a higher risk of developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Research indicates a significant association between liver fat accumulation (steatosis) and fibrosis in HH. This case involves a 31-year-old male with HH and an uncommon biliary obstruction caused by focal fat infiltration.
