Examining The Relationships Between Secondary General Education Teachers' Attitudes Toward Inclusion, Professional Development, And Support From Special Education Personnel, Lynn Wogamon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This correlational research study examined the relationships between secondary general education teachers' attitudes toward inclusion, hours of professional development in topics related to special education and hours of support from special education personnel addressing the needs of students with disabilities received weekly. The research also investigated whether this information could be used to predict secondary general education teachers' attitudes towards inclusion. General education teachers in six South Carolina high schools completed the Scale of Teacher Attitudes Toward Inclusive Classrooms (STATIC) and a demographic survey that asked about hours of professional development in special education topics and hours of support received …

The Effects Of Teacher Preparation Programs On Novice Teachers Regarding Classroom Management, Academic Preparation, Time Management, And Self Efficacy, Dolores Carr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examines the national concern regarding types of teacher preparation programs (traditional, alternative) and their effects on classroom management, academic preparation, time management, and self-efficacy of novice teachers. What are the decisions and influences that determine highly qualified teachers; can these traits be learned? Does the type of training a teacher receives determine his/her effectiveness? Who determines the standards for teacher preparation programs? What are the challenges facing teacher preparation programs? Who will be responsible for reform and improvement? A review of literature provides direction in answering these questions. The findings uncovered that the type of teacher preparation programs, …

Enhancing The Academic And Social Learning Of Irish Undergraduates Through Emotional And Social Skills Development., 2013 Technological University Dublin
Enhancing The Academic And Social Learning Of Irish Undergraduates Through Emotional And Social Skills Development., Aiden Carthy, Celesta Mccann, Sinead Mcgilloway, Colm Mcguinness
Articles
This paper considers the potential merits of emotional competency coaching for undergraduate students. We outline the findings from our previous work which showed, for example, that a sample of First Year undergraduate students failed to engage with coaching primarily because it was not a mandatory aspect of the curricula. An analysis of the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) - which details the specific learning outcomes that must be achieved by all Irish academic syllabi found that this framework makes scant reference to the development of social and emotional skills. Therefore, a revised working model of the NFQ is proposed, which …

The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the typical terms and conditions of employment in 2012-2013 negotiated agreements in Pennsylvania school districts, and to determine if there was a relationship between enrollment size and 5 selected terms and conditions of employment: base salary; highest salary; teacher contribution for one full-time teacher’s personal and dependent health benefit; total yearly sick, personal, bereavement, and emergency days offered; and steps in the grievance process available to teachers who are union members. The population of this study was 498 of the 499 school districts found in the Pennsylvania Department of Education …
Teacher Evaluation Of The Scripted Reading Street Program And The Level Of Satisfaction Among Its Sub-Scale Components, 2013 Seton Hall University
Teacher Evaluation Of The Scripted Reading Street Program And The Level Of Satisfaction Among Its Sub-Scale Components, Danielle Savino-Garzon
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) transformed the system of accountability for schools in the United States by implementing high stakes consequences for poor performance on standardized tests. Scripted curriculum has become a common practice as a means to prepare students to achieve the academic standards measured by standardized tests. The purpose of this mixed-methods research study was to explore teachers’ evaluation of the scripted Reading Street program and the implementation of the sub-scale components of this curriculum within their classrooms in one New Jersey urban district. This study was conducted to determine whether there were challenges …

Student And Teacher Attitudes Toward Giftedness In A Two Laboratory School Environment: A Case For Conducting A Needs Assessment, Jennifer Riedl Cross, Tracy Cross, Andrea D. Frazier
NALS Journal
Providing effective professional development in laboratory schools around topics that can be divisive, such as preparing a school environment for expansion of gifted education services, can be quite difficult. However, doing so based on data collected through a needs assessment can be invaluable to the planning process. As part of a needs assessment in preparation to enroll 100 new gifted students, students and teachers (N=171) from a unique setting in which a residential school for gifted high school students is housed within a laboratory school were surveyed using F. Gagné and L. Nadeau’s (1991) Opinions about the Gifted …

Networking Young Citizens: Learning To Be Citizens In And With The Social Web, Suzanne Mellor, Terri Seddon
Suzanne Mellor
Many claims are made in the popular press and in professional education literature about the potential role of the social web for increasing the active civic engagement of young citizens, by either using it as a source of information or as a participatory tool. Empirical evidence supporting such claims is sparse and contested. Moreover, the impact of a young person’s general learning experience, especially that involving Web2, is rarely considered in terms of young people’s likely or actual active civic engagement. The Australian pilot research project Networking Young Citizens, supported by Monash University, examined the ways in which Web2 was …
A Qualitative Investigation: Why Teachers Are Not Aspiring To The Principalship, 2013 Seton Hall University
A Qualitative Investigation: Why Teachers Are Not Aspiring To The Principalship, Jennifer Carne
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
While No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top inaugurated new movements in education, it has been reported that school districts are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit qualified new principals. Reports indicate there is an abundance of certified individuals able to assume this position. However, the principalship has evolved into a position that is associated with additional responsibilities and new accountability mandates.
The purpose of this study is to explore the reasons why teachers who hold administrative certifications are not pursuing the principalship. During this new era of educational accountability, it is important to understand why teachers pursued …
Institutional Governance Of New Program Development At Public Research Universities, 2013 University of Nebraska - Lincoln
Institutional Governance Of New Program Development At Public Research Universities, Nathan Brad Miller
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Central university administration is often involved with guiding new programs through university and state approvals. A number of factors affect these processes. No studies discuss the role of central administrators in program approvals, however. This study addresses the gap through interviews with 13 individuals responsible for new program approvals in the provost’s office of 12 Research University/Very High public institutions. Five primary themes emerged in the interviews. The themes were used to frame discussion on the purpose, barriers, and self-described roles of the participants. Partial findings from this research were reported in Miller (2013).
