Using The Niloa Transparency Framework: It's All About The Process, Cathy S. Sweet, Lori A. Hollenbeck, Caroline A. Critchlow, Jane M. Souza

Educational Effectiveness Assessment Faculty/Staff Publications

When the St. John Fisher College Educational Assessment Leadership Team set out to make assessment information readily accessible, they looked to the NILOA Transparency Framework to serve as a guiding template. Recognizing its use nationally to clearly communicate the six assessment components with hexagons, they saw the NILOA model as the ideal format for the design of the institutional assessment website. Assessment results could be organized with the comprehensive, straightforward NILOA graphic. What they did not expect, however, was that the process of adopting the framework would transform not just how assessment “looked”, but how they saw it as well.

Use Of Interviews For Assessment: A Case Study, David Dorran, Richard Hayes

Conference papers

While delivering a module on digital signal processing a series of one-to-one interviews were used extensively to assess undergraduate students. The interviews were organised so as to encourage students to focus on fundamentals before attempting to deal with more complex concepts. Feedback from the students about the process was extremely positive and the vast majority of survey respondents indicated that they found that the interviews motivated them to engage with course material effectively. This paper describes the module setup; the interview process used and discusses the results of the survey.

Predicting New Jersey High School Proficiency Test Results In Mathematics And Language Arts Using Community Demographic Data, Christopher D. Lynch

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study examined the relationship between the 2013 New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) Language Arts and Mathematics scores and school level data related to family human capital and community social capital found in the extant literature to influence student achievement on high-stakes standardized assessments. School level data included percentage of families in poverty for 12 months, percentage of lone-parent households (total), and percentage of population with some college. Final analysis utilized hierarchical linear regression and the application of a mathematical algorithm found in extant literature. The study incorporated New Jersey high schools that (a) tested more than 25 …

Outstanding Educational Performance Awards: Highlighting High-Achieving Arkansas Schools, 2015, Charlene A. Reid, Gary W. Ritter

Arkansas Education Reports

In this report, we are presenting a list of the top 25 schools in each area. In some cases, these “top 25 lists” will contain more than 25 schools as some schools’ GPA scores will be identical. This is not a new phenomenon, as we also exceeded 25 schools in previous reports when using the percent proficient and advanced metric as an indicator for student achievement; however, there are fewer ties using the more precise GPA measure.

Science exams were only administered in grades 5, 7, and to students completing Biology. There are very different performance patterns by grade: Fifth …

A New Research Impact Measuring System, Nader Ale Ebrahim 2015 Selected Works

A New Research Impact Measuring System, Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nader Ale Ebrahim

For years, scientists have been trying to measure the quality of scholarly work by the number of times an article is cited in other articles or the impact factor of the journal which published an article. However, citation is a lagging indicator and journal impact factor may be misleading since a Journal's citation count is usually caused by a small number of articles in that journal. With the rise of the web as the archiving and emerging interaction platform, there is a need for new ways to measure articles and books impact. Altmetrics attempts to use the online activity to …

A Mixed-Methods (Quantitative-Qualitative) Study To Identify The Perceived Level Of, Zeky Zardo

Dissertations

Different approaches to developing leaders have been established through various forms of self-assessment, action learning, and education and training activities (Smither et al., 2005). The existing body of research on the impact and success of college and university leadership development programs focuses heavily on undergraduate leadership programs and not graduate-level programs such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) or the doctorate. The purpose of this mixed-methods (quantitative–qualitative) study was to identify the perceived level of transformational leadership skill development by students enrolled in a doctoral program in organizational leadership. In addition, it was the purpose of this study to …

Do Degree Maps Facilitate Student Success?, James W. Marion Jr, Jason M. Ruckert, Tracey M. Richardson 2015 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Do Degree Maps Facilitate Student Success?, James W. Marion Jr, Jason M. Ruckert, Tracey M. Richardson

Tracey M Richardson

The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the potential impact of degree maps on facilitating student success. The concept grew out of quantitative evidence suggesting students using degree maps are more likely to enroll in our programs, continue in our programs, register for more classes per term, and have better graduation rates than those students who do not use a degree map. Our methodology included qualitative coding of focus group responses (n = 28) then using those emerging themes to inform a survey instrument to collect student perceptions about the degree map’s impact (n = 211). This …

Assessing The Intended Participation Of Young Adolescents As Future Citizens, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon 2015 ACER

Assessing The Intended Participation Of Young Adolescents As Future Citizens, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon

Dr Wolfram Schulz

In many Western countries there is concern about the level of participation of their citizens in civic life and the apparent lack of interest and involvement among young people in public and political life (Curtice & Seyd, 2003). The development of knowledge, understanding, skills, and dispositions that prepare young people to comprehend the world, hold productive employment, and be informed active citizens are among the characteristics that educational systems, schools, and teachers value and attempt to foster. However, countries vary in the status accorded to civic and citizenship education as part of school education and the relative importance of developing …

Maximizing Articles Citation Frequency, Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nader Ale Ebrahim

The number of citations contributes to over 30% in the university rankings. Therefore, most of the scientists are looking for an effective method to increase their citation record. On the other hand, increase research visibility in the academic world in order to receive comments and citations from fellow researchers across the globe, is essential. Publishing a high quality paper in scientific journals is only halfway towards receiving citation in the future. The rest of the journey is dependent on disseminating the publications via proper utilization of the “Research Tools”. Proper tools allow the researchers to increase the research impact and …

An Analysis Of Student Achievement And Measures Of Growth Under No Child Left Behind, Alexis G. Yusim 2015 Lake Forest College

An Analysis Of Student Achievement And Measures Of Growth Under No Child Left Behind, Alexis G. Yusim

Undergraduate Economic Review

With the passing of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) has come a wave of economic analyses of education production functions attempting to explain what community and school characteristics affect achievement gaps and yearly growth in pass rates. Using standardized test data from the Illinois State Board of Education over the period of NCLB, I argue that there are ways to empirically re-define growth and student success that more effectively capture NCLB’s goals. The results in this paper show inherent differences between the three growth definitions employed and the educational experiences in the grades analyzed.
