RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is highly prevalent among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) not requiring kidney replacement therapy. We studied the associations of PH with mortality, kidney failure, as well as cardiovascular (CV) and non-CV hospitalization among Medicare beneficiaries with a CKD diagnosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, observational study using a matched cohort design.

SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Patients with PH (based on 2 claims within 2 years) and patients without PH matched on CKD stage from the Medicare 5% CKD sample (1996-2016).

PREDICTOR: Presence of pulmonary hypertension.

OUTCOME: Mortality, kidney failure, and all-cause, CV, and non-CV hospitalization.

Rasmussen aneurysm is rare diagnosis occurring in patients with long-standing tuberculosis. TB-COVID-19 co-infection in the context of Rasmussen aneurysm is a rare occurrence, yet new cases are emerging. An elderly male was recently diagnosed with TB-COVID-19 co-infection and presented with sudden onset massive hemoptysis. The patient was diagnosed with Rasmussen aneurysm after being evaluated by computed tomography pulmonary angiogram due to a suggestive clinical presentation. Interventional radiologists planned for embolization of pulmonary artery, with an unidentifiable source. A 72-year-old male was brought to the hospital following a motorcycle crash and was admitted for multiple trauma management. His initial course of hospitalization was complicated by mild hypoxemia and altered mental status. Respiratory workup and imaging were consistent with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. He completed a five-day course of remdesivir and a ten-day course of dexamethasone. Twenty days later, he developed a low-grade fever. His chest computerized tomography (CT) showed gas and fluid containing parenchymal collection in the anteromedial right middle lobe measuring up to 4.8 cm, most consistent with a pulmonary abscess. Antimicrobial treatment was started.

Background: The effects of biologics on severe asthmatics with chronic rhinosinusitis with sinonasal polyposis (CRSwNP) have not been well established. This study evaluates overall control of asthma in patients with and without sinonasal polyps following initiation of biologics therapy.

Methods: Retrospective review of patients with asthma treated with a biologic agent (benralizumab, omalizumab, dupilumab, mepolizumab) and CRSwNP. Charts were assessed for ACT scores at time of biologic enrollment and at 4-7 months.

Results:82 patients met inclusion criteria; 42 (52.5%) patients with asthma and 40 (47.5%) with concurrent sinonasal polyps. The average ACT score for the non-polyp cohort was 13.16 …

Asthma is a common illness affecting 8% of the US population and costing $81.9 billion per year.^1,2 Due to its chronic and variable nature, asthmatics need frequent medication adjustments, making management challenging for both physicians and patients. Studies show that patients can control their asthma using an asthma action plan (AAP), which includes directions for daily self-assessment, baseline medications and steps to facilitate detection and treatment of an exacerbation. Self-management education using AAPs is associated with a reduction in hospital admissions and ED visits by 40% and 20%, respectively.³ Despite evidence that AAPs are efficacious, the underlying reason …

Introduction: The degree of association and type of causal versus non-causal relationship between pneumonia and lung cancer (LC) are evolving discussions. We reviewed English publications on the degree of association between pneumonia and subsequent LC.

Methods: We searched the PubMed database using key words for pneumonia, LC, and chlamydia infection. We selected peer-reviewed studies of patients with pneumonia and LC. Case reports and other literature reviews were excluded from this review.

Introduction Vaccines against COVID -19 have been reported to cause venous thromboembolism (VTE). To our knowledge, this is the first case to report the massive, near-fatal Pulmonary Embolism (PE) associated with BNT162b2 Covid-19 (Pfizer/BioNTech) vaccine and discuss the associated risk factors for PE. Case 41-year-old, non-smoker, female on OCP, presented for syncope and seizure-like activity. Upon presentation, she was obtunded and tachypneic. Initial labs showed leukocytosis, mild anemia, and thrombocytopenia, respiratory and metabolic acidosis. Introduction: Both vaping and bleomycin-based chemotherapy regimens are known risk factors for acute lung injury. Few, if any, cases are documented in the literature of these insults co-occurring. Case description: A 20-year-old male was diagnosed with Stage III testicular cancer in Autumn of 2020. He began BEP (bleomycin-etoposide-platinum), of which he completed three cycles before developing pulmonary sequelae. Material and methods: An observational study was conducted in patients with post-COVID lung parenchymal abnormalities from April till September 2020. Patients ≥18 years of age with COVID-19 who were diagnosed as post-COVID lung parenchymal abnormality based on respiratory symptoms and HRCT chest imaging after the recovery of acute infection. Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of pediatric death, with >99% of mortality occurring in low- and lower middle-income countries. At least half of RSV-related deaths are estimated to occur in the community, but clinical characteristics of this group of children remain poorly characterized.
Methods: The RSV Global Online Mortality Database (RSV GOLD), a global registry of under-5 children who have died with RSV-related illness, describes clinical characteristics of children dying of RSV through global data sharing.
