Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas account for most head and neck malignancies. While multi-modality treatment may be offered for locally advanced cancer, distant metastasis still occurs in a significant number of patients. This paper aims to present a rare case of a patient who developed bony metastases in the cervical spine from a primary hypopharyngeal malignancy status post-laryngopharyngectomy. We report a case of a male patient presenting with acute-on-chronic hypercapnic and hypoxic respiratory failure with two months of dysphagia and weight loss. Variations in the biomechanical stiffness of brain tumors can not only influence the difficulty of surgical resection but also impact postoperative outcomes. In a prospective, single-blinded study, we utilize pre-operative magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) to predict the stiffness of intracranial tumors intraoperatively and assess the impact of increased tumor stiffness on clinical outcomes following microsurgical resection of vestibular schwannomas (VS) and meningiomas. MRE measurements significantly correlated with intraoperative tumor stiffness and baseline hearing status of VS patients. Mucoceles can often present as a complication after prior sinus surgery or maxillofacial trauma when mucosal drainage is obstructed. Their presence in the orbit following orbital wall fracture and subsequent repair represent an exceedingly rare complication whose occurrence is limited to a few reported cases in the literature. In these patients, continuous cyst expansion and subsequent mass effect may lead to ophthalmic symptoms, including orbital pain, proptosis, diplopia, and globe dystopia. OBJECTIVES: To describe findings from an otolaryngology-specific needs assessment tool in Zimbabwe.

METHODS: Surveys were developed and shared with Low-Middle Income Country (LMIC) hosting institutions in Zimbabwe and to High-Income Country surgical trip participants (HIC). Respondents were otolaryngologists identified online and through professional networks who had participated in a surgical trip.

RESULTS: The most common procedures Zimbabwe otolaryngologists reported treating were adenotonsillectomy (85.7%), chronic rhinosinusitis (71.4%), chronic otitis (57.1%), and head and neck tumor intervention (57.1%). The most common untreatable conditions that host physicians wanted to treat were skull base surgery (71.4%), flap reconstructions (57.1%), and laryngotracheal reconstruction (57.1%). The …

Background: Head and neck osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the midface requiring free flap (FF) reconstruction is uncommon. This multi-institutional study was designed to review outcomes for this rare patient population. Methods: Retrospective multi-institutional review of FF reconstruction for midface ORN (2005–2022; n = 54). Results: The FF survival rate was 87% (n = 54). Background and Aim: The emergence of direct-to-consumer hearing devices has introduced confusion in making appropriate choices, highlighting the need for users to be well-informed for optimal device selection. Currently, no established metric offers insights into the sound performance of these devices. This study aimed to introduce and assess a novel consumer-centric metric (i.e., SoundScore) for hearing device audio performance.

Ulcerative vocal fold lesions occupy the vibratory margins of the musculomembranous portion of the vocal folds and cause dysphonia. Symptoms may exist for several weeks to months before improvement occurs. Lesions observed on strobovideolaryngoscopy may resemble malignant leukoplakia and tempt physicians to obtain biopsy. Biopsy can cause permanent dysphonia and should be performed only when necessary. Therefore, it is important to identify prolonged ulcerative laryngitis and provide appropriate management.

The lack of comprehensive diagnostics and consensus analytical models for evaluating the status of a patient's immune system has hindered a wider adoption of immunoprofiling for treatment monitoring and response prediction in cancer patients. To address this unmet need, we developed an immunoprofiling platform that uses multiparameter flow cytometry to characterize immune cell heterogeneity in the peripheral blood of healthy donors and patients with advanced cancers. Using unsupervised clustering, we identified five immunotypes with unique distributions of different cell types and gene expression profiles. Early detection using dynamic observation across the respiratory cycle helps assume accurate diagnosis and effective management. Tuberculosis (TB) from the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis and candidiasis from the fungus Candida albicans are both opportunistic pathogens with the ability to instigate infections within the larynx with similar clinical features, yet vastly different diagnostic parameters and treatment regimens.

Here, we highlight a case of an Indian woman on immune-modulating drugs who presented with severe laryngeal symptoms initially presumed to be laryngeal candidiasis but was later discovered to be laryngeal tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) affects many survivors of COVID-19. Prior studies have investigated the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for OD. We describe the first randomized controlled trial investigating topical PRP for OD treatment and contribute to existing literature illustrating PRP as an emerging therapeutic.

METHODS: This is a single-blinded, randomized controlled trial conducted from July 2022 to December 2023. We report a case of a 64-year-old male who presented with transient episodes of near syncope followed by a noxious odor and was diagnosed with olfactory seizures. The differential diagnosis for near syncope is broad. This case demonstrates that unusual olfactory symptoms can lead to a diagnosis of seizure disorder in the emergency department.

• Endoscopic Endonasal Skull Base Surgery (EESBS) encompasses a wide range of surgeries; pituitary adenoma resection is the most common of these.
• Patients routinely are admitted to the ICU post-operatively for monitoring of serious complications such as intracerebral hemorrhage and meningitis.
• Some complications such as diabetes insipidus, however, do not require a stay within the ICU and can be managed as an out-patient.
• Besides adding stress and discomfort to the patient, stays in the ICU are costly with one study reporting a cost of $2,902 per day.
