Parental Instincts: The Neurological And Biological Factors Associated With Parenthood, Jared Reeder
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The following project involves a systematic review of the scientific literature on neural and biological changes of mothers and fathers in parenthood. Until very recently, little scientific research was devoted to studying how bearing children affects a man or woman’s long-term biology. Over the last twenty years, studies of neuroplastic changes in new mothers show specific neural mechanisms responsible for altering the behaviors of mothers during and after pregnancy. These changes in neuroplasticity alter behavior in such a way that led to mothers requiring less sleep and being more prone to hearing the cries of their children. In addition to …

The Ethical Dilemma Of Whether Or Not To Withhold Life Sustaining Treatments For Newborns, Chloe G. Payne
OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal
Deeply complex ethical questions can arise when deciding whether to continue or stop life-sustaining treatments for critically ill newborns. Various factors that can influence these decisions are explored, such as the expected quality of life for the newborn, the resources that the family and hospital have at their disposal, and the role of religious beliefs. Emphasis is placed on the importance of striking a balance between the child's best interest, the autonomy of the parents, and the medical facts. The potential psychological and physical consequences for parents who decide to stop treatment, which often results in the loss of their …

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women among all cancer types. It is highly heterogeneous in nature, which means that the tumors have different morphologies and there is heterogeneity even among people who have the same type of tumor. Several staging and classifying systems have been developed due to the variability of different types of breast cancer. Due to high heterogeneity, personalized treatment has become a new strategy. Out of all breast cancer subtypes, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) comprises ∼10%-15%. TNBC refers to the subtype of breast cancer where cells do not express estrogen receptors, …

The complexity of birth control options significantly impacts women's lives, with hormonal contraceptives being commonly used but often misunderstood. These contraceptives, which contain estrogen and progestin or progestin only, come in various forms such as pills, implants, IUDs, injections, the vaginal ring, and skin patches, offering benefits such as reduced menstrual cramps and ectopic pregnancy risk. However, they can also lead to adverse effects including increased blood pressure, nausea, headaches, breakthrough bleeding, and heightened risk of blood clots, with research indicating a potential link between their use and a decline in mental health. Given the prevalence of depression, particularly in …

Placental Histopathological Changes In Covid-19 And Their Associated Effects On Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes, Eric Mugambi
Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Introduction: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among pregnant women. Pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 are at a greater risk of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, non-iatrogenic preterm birth, stillbirth, and small for gestational age infants/fetal growth restriction (SGA/FGR), which share a common placental etiology. Placental histopathological changes attributed to COVID-19 have been demonstrated but there is a knowledge gap in how these changes impact pregnancy outcomes particularly those of placental origin. Objectives: To investigate if there is an association between placental histopathology (maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM), fetal vascular malperfusion (FVM), acute and chronic inflammatory pathology, and other findings …

Effect Of Estrogen On Chondrogenesis In Female Articular Chondrocytes, Ebony R. Parsons
Honors Undergraduate Theses
As women age and transition into menopause they face a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis leading to total joint replacements. Estrogen is the primary female reproductive hormone. As a woman approaches menopause, estrogen production decreases by 100-fold. Previous research has shown that Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT) reduced joint replacements in post-menopausal women. However, there is a lack of research surrounding ERT's effect on chondrocyte proliferation and extracellular matrix production, particularly 3D culture extracellular matrix production. Chondrogenesis is a process of skeletal development resulting in the formation of cartilage. Chondrocytes, derived from mesenchymal progenitors, serve as the fundamental cellular component in …

Abstract
Breast cancer remains a challenging health issue in the United States, representing the second leading cause of cancer deaths for women. The key approach to tackle this issue is the early detection of breast cancer through annual mammography screening in asymptomatic women. This quality improvement project sought to improve the proportion of breast cancer screening documentation in a private obstetrics and gynecology practice that serves primarily Black women. In addition, the project is thought to improve the current utilization of office mammogram services and its mammogram completion rate. Comprehensive interventions implemented included establishing clear guidelines, staff education, using paper …

Quality Of Life And Sexual Function Of Women With Endometriosis At The Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, Edna Mohere Chacha
Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Introduction: Endometriosis is a benign, chronic condition that affects up to ten percent of women of childbearing age. It’s marked by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity (Giudice, 2010). It is a health condition with wide-ranging and pervasive sequelae making it a significant health concern requiring appropriate action (Rush & Misajon, 2018). We observed that there was a paucity of data relating to how endometriosis impacted on female sexual function and quality of life in sub-Saharan Africa, Kenya included. Objectives: The primary goal of this empirical investigation was to determine the quality of life of women who …

Capstone Showcase
The percentage of cesarean deliveries in the United States has increased to a rate of 32.1%, double what the World Health Organization recommends as an ideal rate for maternal and fetal benefits. The majority of cesarean sections are performed on women who have never had the procedure before and this increases the risk for subsequent cesarean deliveries. Half of the indications for primary cesarean delivery were found to be non-reassuring fetal heart tracings and arrest of labor, both of which are subject to obstetric provider judgment and comfort level. Among these there is also an increasing incidence of elective primary …
