[Introduction] Accurate coding is a critical component of dermatologic practice, influencing reimbursement and documentation of clinical complexity. Although alopecia has significant psychosocial and financial burdens, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding patterns in alopecia management remain largely understudied. Our population-level study using the American Academy of Dermatology's DataDerm clinical registry¹ evaluates alopecia CPT coding trends, pre-2021 and post-2021 evaluation and management (E/M) CPT coding updates,² aiming to inform coding practices and visit complexity, which have significant reimbursement implications.

[Introduction]

Case description

A 25-year-old woman with a history of ulcerative colitis treated with multiple abdominal surgeries complicated by peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum (PPG) presented with severe peristomal pain and ulceration. Treatment course was complicated; disease control was achieved via combination infliximab 10 mg/kg every 4 weeks, corticosteroids (topical triamcinolone 0.1% ointment, intralesional 10 mg/ml injections, and oral prednisone 30 mg daily with a gradual taper), and cyclosporine 125 mg tapering by 25 mg every 3 weeks, ultimately tapered to infliximab monotherapy.

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that disproportionately affects women, African Americans, and individuals of biracial descent. It is associated with substantial physical and psychiatric morbidity, reducing quality of life.

Objective: This review analyzed disparities in treatment outcomes, disease progression, and healthcare access among HS patients based on insurance type.

Methods: Using PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search identified 7 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Owing to data heterogeneity, studies were qualitatively analyzed.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) characterized by muscle weakness, skin findings, and increased malignancy risk. Cancer risk is greatest in the three years before or after DM onset, termed paraneoplastic DM. The International Myositis Assessment and Clinical Studies Group (IMACS) set forth evidence-based guidelines for risk stratification and cancer screenings for newly diagnosed patients with IIM. '

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining malignancy that can involve the skin, lymph nodes, and visceral organs in patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We report the case of a 35-year-old man with no known prior medical history who presented to the charity care clinic complaining of recurrent thrush and two weeks of progressive right lower extremity swelling. A fast mid-infrared spectral probe was used to record infrared (IR) spectra of fresh skin tissue removed from patients with biopsy-proven keratinocytic cancer (KC) during Mohs surgery. A 150-patient library of IR spectral data was obtained to see if KC on the epidermal side (outside) of tissue samples can be differentiated from adjacent nonmalignant tissue and normal skin. A linear support vector machine model minimized overtraining predicting the contributions to decisions at each step in the spectrum. Background. Pyogenic granulomas (PGs) are benign vascular lesions commonly encountered in primary care settings. They are often linked to trauma, hormonal changes, infections, or medications. While traditional treatments such as excision, curettage, and silver nitrate application are the treatment of choice, recurrence is possible, and they may result in discomfort, anxiety, or scarring. This case highlights the successful use of salt packing, a low-cost, minimally invasive alternative, for a PG resistant to conventional therapy.

The thin, vascularized skin of the eyelids makes them prone to irritation and discoloration, potentially revealing underlying issues, such as subcutaneous deposits, and an abundance of pigments like carotenoids and lipofuscins. First described in 2008 by Assouly et al, orange palpebral spots (OPS) present as painless orange-yellow lesions on the upper eyelids, primarily affecting White women with Fitzpatrick skin types I to III. Ruptured microcomedones create wounds that can lead to prolonged inflammation, increased collagen synthesis, and fibrinolysis inhibition, resulting in elevated scar tissue in acne lesions. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to prolonged inflammation and damage to dermal collagen. High total cholesterol levels can lead to excessive sebum production, exacerbating inflammation and fibrosis.
