An Ecological Perspective Of Intergenerational Trauma: Clinical Implications, Charmayne R. Adams, Ramona I. Grad, Matthew L. Nice

Journal of Counseling Research and Practice

In this paper, the authors present information about both intergenerational trauma and an ecological case conceptualization model to assist counselors as they develop treatment plans and determine appropriate interventions. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological model is introduced as a way to help professional counselors in a variety of settings explore a more holistic understanding of presenting problems. The authors use a case illustration to highlight how to implement an ecological framework with a client with Colombian heritage to better understand and address intergenerational trauma as an important aspect of treatment planning. The paper includes clinical examples, clinical resources, and implications for professional counselors, …

International Undergraduates Are Not A Resource For Neocolonial Exploitation, Mathew H. Gendle, Amanda Tapler Mar 2023

International Undergraduates Are Not A Resource For Neocolonial Exploitation, Mathew H. Gendle, Amanda Tapler

Essays in Education

Policies developed to internationalize academic institutions in the U.S. that include admission strategies to increase international student populations must consider potential negative and ethical outcomes. Such policies may inadvertently exploit international students to generate revenue, increase rankings, meet diversity targets, and conduct unrecognized and uncompensated campus labor. However, policies based on mutually beneficial outcomes will diversify U.S. institutions, while also incentivizing the return of benefits derived from this education back to the students’ home communities.

Institutional Choices Regarding Human Rights And Its Effect On Citizen Participation, Elle Jones Mar 2023

Institutional Choices Regarding Human Rights And Its Effect On Citizen Participation, Elle Jones

Research in the Capitol

Over centuries, one party has been unhappy, whereas the other has power. But what about the population as a whole? Government policy constantly changes, forcing citizens to change their relationship with it. An activist's involvement can include protests or changing voter turnout. Recent midterm elections are a perfect example. Voter turnout for Democrats led to underperformance in several red states. This is due to those who based their vote on the Dobbs decision when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade the summer before, despite Democratic approval ratings being 50% and Republican approval ratings leading by 3%. With many more …

Comparing Cover Crop Research In Farmer-Led And Researcher-Led Experiments In The Western Corn Belt, Katja Koehler-Cole, Andrea D. Basche, Laura J. Thompson, Jennifer M. Rees Mar 2023

Comparing Cover Crop Research In Farmer-Led And Researcher-Led Experiments In The Western Corn Belt, Katja Koehler-Cole, Andrea D. Basche, Laura J. Thompson, Jennifer M. Rees

Nebraska Cooperative Extension: Faculty and Staff Publications

Cover crops can mitigate soil degradation and nutrient loss and can be used to achieve continuous living cover in cropping systems, although their adoption in the Western Corn Belt of the United States remains low. It is increasingly recognized that cover crop integration into corn (Zea mays L.)-based crop rotations is complex, requiring site and operation specific management. In this review, we compared on-farm, farmer-led field scale trials to researcher-led trials carried out in small plots on University of Nebraska-Lincoln experiment stations. Although there is a range of cover crop research conducted in the state, there is no …

Please Don’T Stop The Music: A Quantitative Content Analysis Of Black Protest Music Released Between 2013-2022 As A Response To #Blacklivesmatter, Melissa Williams

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to conduct a quantitative content analysis to determine if protest songs produced by Black musicians in response to police brutality since the development of #BlackLivesMatter reflect the traditional use of semiotics, narrative language, and collective identity within the verses of lyrics released between 2013-2022.

The findings of the study revealed that there were fewer references to religion than seen in spirituals or during the Civil Rights movement. The police received more attention than other conventional institutions. The lyrics did not describe the daily microaggressions that Black people face, yet there were several references within …

The Experiences Of Black Women Senior Student Affairs Officers: A Multiple-Case Study, Tamekka L. Cornelius Ph.D, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D. Mar 2023

The Experiences Of Black Women Senior Student Affairs Officers: A Multiple-Case Study, Tamekka L. Cornelius Ph.D, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D.

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

Within this multiple-case study, we explored the experiences of Black women in senior student affairs officer (SSAO) positions at four-year historically white institutions (HWIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. We used Black feminist thought and representational bureaucracy to theoretically frame the study. Participants included SSAOs representing three HWIs and two HBCUs. Four central themes—often expressed within experiences of marginalization—emerged across the cases: 1) I Have a Right to Be Here; 2) Creating Networks; 3) No Straight Line to the Top; and 4) I’m Thinking about the Black Girls Coming Behind Me. We conclude the …

Quantifying The Soundscape: How Filters Change Acoustic Indices, Emilia B. Hyland, Annie Schulz, John E. Quinn Mar 2023

Quantifying The Soundscape: How Filters Change Acoustic Indices, Emilia B. Hyland, Annie Schulz, John E. Quinn

Open Access Fund Publications

Monitoring biodiversity can be time consuming and costly. Automated recording units (ARUs) have rapidly emerged as an efficient and cost-effective tool for measuring biodiversity. Acoustic indices are one output from recordings from ARUs that can be quantified to serve as an ecological indicator for biodiversity. However, there is a lack of guidance on what acoustic filters to apply to these indices and when. To address this gap, we collected acoustic data from study locations spanning temperate and tropical forests, agricultural grasslands and croplands, and peri-urban development. We applied filters of 80, 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz to these data when …

Healthcare Associated Infections, Nurse Staffing, And Financial Performance, Soumya Upadhyay, Dean G. Smith Mar 2023

Healthcare Associated Infections, Nurse Staffing, And Financial Performance, Soumya Upadhyay, Dean G. Smith

Healthcare Administration and Policy Faculty Research

Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are a concern to patients, hospital administrators and policymakers. For over than a decade, efforts have been made to hold hospitals accountable for the costs of HAIs. This study uses contingency theory as a framework to examine the association between HAIs and hospital financial performance. We use publicly available data on 2059 hospitals in 2014 to 2016 that include HAIs, staffing financial performance, and hospital and hospital market characteristics. The key independent variables are available infection rates and nurse staffing. The dependent variables are indicators of financial performance: operating margin, total margin, and days cash on …

The Privacy Librarian Is In!: How Privacy Issues Affect Researchers And Libraries, John Felts, Heather Staines, Tim Lloyd, Beth Bernhardt, Russell Palmer

Library Faculty Presentations

Faced with an increasingly complex online environment through which libraries provide access to scholarly resources, librarians have found it difficult to educate users in protecting their personal information and online behaviors from inappropriate and sometimes unauthorized use while promoting the personalization services that users find beneficial. Modeled after the long-running Peanuts cartoon with Lucy offering advice for 5 cents, this interactive session will tackle key privacy issues in the researcher, vendor, and library framework. It will kick off with John Felts of Coastal Carolina staffing his post as "Privacy Librarian" while training a new library employee.

Antecedents Of Fssb: Evaluating The Demographic Basis Of Support, Erika Ann Schemmel Mar 2023

Antecedents Of Fssb: Evaluating The Demographic Basis Of Support, Erika Ann Schemmel

Dissertations and Theses

The benefits of family-supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSB) have been well-documented in recent literature. However, less research has examined the antecedents of FSSB. The present study draws from two theoretical models of FSSB to investigate the demographic antecedents of FSSB in a military sample. Supervisor and employee gender, partnered status, parental status, and elder caregiving status were examined to determine by whom, and for whom, FSSB is provided, as measured by employee perceptions. It is hypothesized that supervisors and employees who are women, partnered, parents, and/or caregivers to elders would have higher employee-ratings of FSSB. Furthermore, the present study applied a …

Engaging Gen Z Through Humor, Wendy Gillis, Fred Pozin Mar 2023

Engaging Gen Z Through Humor, Wendy Gillis, Fred Pozin

AMTP Proceedings 2023

ABSTRACT

The current generation of undergraduate students in the classroom (Gen Z) is the loneliest generation in the U.S. (Twenge, 2017), and they know it. What are they spending time on? Their phones. What are they not spending time on? Time with friends (Twenge, 2017). Gen Z has more of a life online versus offline, yet Gen Z yearns for in-person interaction, and the pandemic has only made it worse. The authors’ advice? Tell a joke. By combining theories from psychology, management, and marketing, this conceptual paper explores the relationship between humor, trust, and persuasion.

Perceived Gender Norm Adherence In Women As Function Of Sex-Typical Facial Features And Surname Decisions, Kelsey Drea Mar 2023

Perceived Gender Norm Adherence In Women As Function Of Sex-Typical Facial Features And Surname Decisions, Kelsey Drea

Dissertations

Women’s retention of their surname following marriage has become increasingly common despite pervasive stereotypes of this stereotype as leading to relational failure. It could be possible that women’s physical appearance could buffer them from these stereotypes, particularly if that appearance is sex-typical. This study investigated how feminized facial structures could buffer women from negative perceptions of their abilities in relationships. Participants assessed a woman described as having changed or kept her surname. This woman’s face varied in her sex typicality (i.e., feminized, masculinized, unaltered). Feminine women appeared more modest when they kept their surname. Hostile sexism predicted less relational success …
