Changing Employment Patterns In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Family Structure, Don E. Albrecht, Stan L. Albrecht
Changing Employment Patterns In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Family Structure, Don E. Albrecht, Stan L. Albrecht
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
During the past few decades, the industria/employment structure of rural America has changed dramatically. The major causes of these changes have been technological developments which have reduced the human labor needs in the natural resources industries of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and mining. While employment in the natural resources industries has declined, the loss of these jobs has been offset by increased employment in the manufacturing and service industries. This paper explores the relationship between variations in the industrial structure of nonmetropolitan counties in the United States and several family structure variables. It was found that counties with larger proportions of …

Farm Families Moving To Town: An Analysis Of Farm Population Declines, Don E. Albrecht
Farm Families Moving To Town: An Analysis Of Farm Population Declines, Don E. Albrecht
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Recent census data indicate that a sizable proportion of individuals and families operating farms in the United States are choosing to live in urban and rural communities rather than on the farmstead. This phenomena is occurring in all regions of the country. In this paper, hypotheses are developed and tested to help explain and understand this phenomena and the variations that exist from county to county. County level data from the 1978 and 1987 Census of Agriculture and the 1980 and 1990 Census of Population are analyzed. Results show that counties with larger proportions of farm families living in the …
A Social Exchange Explanation Of Participation In The U.S. Farm Program, John K. Thomas, Jack Thigpen
A Social Exchange Explanation Of Participation In The U.S. Farm Program, John K. Thomas, Jack Thigpen
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Passage of the 1990 Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act resulted from the political influence of many environmental interest groups and, consequently, included many conservation provisions. As agricultural policy has increasingly reflected the environmental concerns of the public, farmers who participate in the Farm Program have adjusted their production practices to conserve land and water resources, minimize use of agrichemicals, and control animal wastes. Social exchange theory was used to examine personal and farm characteristics that could affect agroenvironmental attitudes, Farm Program participation, and conservation practices of Texas farmers (n = 1,063 farmers) in 199 1. One in four farmers …
Conflict In The Community: A Challenge For Land Grant Universities, Thomas W. Ilvento
Conflict In The Community: A Challenge For Land Grant Universities, Thomas W. Ilvento
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This paper revisits the notion of conflict in the community and then discusses a relatively new strategy for dealing with community conflict that is gaining popularity: alternative dispute resolution (ADR), particularly mediation. While ADRs are not entirely new, there has been a renewed interest in them as viable strategies for community development and public policy education. Conflict in communities is ubiquitous and should demand greater attention by rural sociologists, particularly those involved in community development. Environmental mediation is a strategy through which rural sociologists can effectively assist a community in resolving conflict Furthermore, as rural sociologists study and practice environmental …

Development Of Marine Environmental Protection Curricula For Cadets At The Arab Academy For Science And Technology And Maritime Transport, Gamal Ahmed Mohamed Ghalwash
World Maritime University Dissertations
Marine environmental protection is becoming, increasingly, a world-wide demand. Marine accidental and operational pollution due to shipping activities, though contributing by a relatively small percentage of the annual global inputs into the seas, is characterized by massive releases of oil or hazardous substances causing acute pollution, which enjoys media coverage and public concem. The human factor has always been behind most accidental and operational marine pollution from shipping activities The IMO emphasised the role of the human factor in the effective and efficient implementation of international regulations, including marine pollutin prevention, through the revised STCW 1978, as amended in 1995. …

Analysis Of Marine Environment Protection Law In Tanzania, Mkakili Fauster Ngowi
Analysis Of Marine Environment Protection Law In Tanzania, Mkakili Fauster Ngowi
World Maritime University Dissertations
The polluting potential of wastes generated is a function of the volume of effluent discharged, their dilution in the receiving water, and their toxicity to marine life. The coastal pollution in Tanzania is no exception to this defined parameter of polluting potential. Most of the factories along the Tanzanian coast often discharge their wastes without treatment directly into the sea. This coupled with the rapidly growing human population and settlements in the coastal zone further exert pressure on the coastal resources. The current state of the Tanzanian marine pollution therefore, is a matter of concern. The environmental challenges that Tanzania …

World Maritime University Dissertations
his dissertation tries to analyse the importance of a major waterway transport that is the Rhine-Main-Danube corridor, both for Romania and the Danube’s riparian countries. Made up through the connection of two major European rivers, the Danube and the Rhine, the corridor connects not only two seas - the North Sea and the Black Sea - but also the two halves of Europe, the West and the East. In the past, the Danube has connected the eastern Europe with some of the western countries - Germany and Austria - but the political and economical systems’ differences have prevented the development …
Economics Of Environmental Damage In Coastal Development, Saujanya Sinha
Economics Of Environmental Damage In Coastal Development, Saujanya Sinha
World Maritime University Dissertations
Economics is a science of choice, of unlimited wants chasing scarce resources. In choosing the resources, human-beings leave a mark on the environment - depleting it, degrading it and, sometimes, destroying it. The destruction is manifest in the tropical coastal waters where some of the world’s richest ecosystems, characterised by extensive coral reefs and dense mangrove forests, exist. Large-scale destruction of valuable resources can cause serious degradation of the environment, thus affecting the economic life of coastal habitants. In economic terms then, is the ‘supply’ of coastal resources infinitely elastic? If not, what is the cost of achieving such elasticity, …
