Democracy Gampông As An Initiative To Elliminate Money Politics In Aceh Singkil, Effendi Hasan, Muliawati Muliawati, Helmi Helmi, Ikhsan Ikhsan
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Money politics conducted by political actors has inadvertently harmed the order of democratic civilization, which seeks to produce exemplary leaders with competence and morality. The practice of money politics is still prevalent in the local community of Singkil Regency, where it is considered pervasive. This is evident in every political contest for the Pileg and Pilkada, where candidates distribute cash, goods, and basic necessities. Observations on the ground indicate that there is a strong suspicion that the people there are extremely pragmatic in their political choices; they do not see the potential figures of the candidates but rather candidates who …
Paraquat, Parkinson's Disease, And Agnotology, Amit Ray, E. Ray Dorsey
Paraquat, Parkinson's Disease, And Agnotology, Amit Ray, E. Ray Dorsey
Articles
This commentary examines the controversial relationship between paraquat, a widely used herbicide, and Parkinson's disease through the lens of agnotology—the deliberate production of ignorance for commercial gain. Despite numerous animal and epidemiological studies linking paraquat to Parkinson's disease, its use in the United States doubled from 2013 to 2018. The authors reveal how the manufacturer allegedly employed tactics similar to the tobacco industry, including attempts to discredit scientific researchers and suppress unfavorable findings. While over 30 countries have banned paraquat due to health risks, the EPA reauthorized its use in 2021. The paper argues that internal company documents and emerging …

The Experiences Of Black Women Senior Student Affairs Officers: A Multiple-Case Study, Tamekka L. Cornelius, Donald Mitchell Jr.
The Qualitative Report
Within this multiple-case study, we explored the experiences of Black women in senior student affairs officer (SSAO) positions at four-year historically white institutions (HWIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. We used Black feminist thought and representational bureaucracy to theoretically frame the study. Participants included SSAOs representing three HWIs and two HBCUs. Four central themes—often expressed within experiences of marginalization—emerged across the cases: 1) I Have a Right to Be Here; 2) Creating Networks; 3) No Straight Line to the Top; and 4) I’m Thinking about the Black Girls Coming Behind Me. We conclude the …

This paper describes the construction of the GTAP Data Base, version 11. The database reconciles different data sources at a global scale for analytical use and provides time series data on value flows, volumes, and various tax instruments. GTAP version 11 has 5 reference years (2004, 2007, 2011, 2014, and 2017), distinguishes 65 sectors in each of 141 countries and 19 aggregate regions - with individual countries accounting for 99.1% of world GDP and 96.4% of world population. The exhaustive nature of GTAP in its country and sector coverage facilitates its use in economy-wide studies of global economic issues.

Carsey Publications
In this brief, the authors illustrate New Hampshire and Vermont’s different responses to supporting the early childhood education and care sector during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine the limited publicly available data on pandemic relief funds through the lens of the interstate Upper Valley region. While data limitations preclude the authors from identifying which child care pandemic relief programs worked best and for whom, the authors find spatial and program type differences in relief receipt. Using data from interviews with early childhood educators in the Upper Valley, the authors identify the role that temporary relief funds have played in keeping …

Women have an important role in politics, where their representation becomes a role model for other women. PAN and PKB are the two parties that won quite a large number of votes in the 2019 elections. However, the percentage of elected women legislators from these two parties does not represent the fulfillment of the 30% quota. This paper analyzes the strategy for selecting women members of PAN and PKB in the 2019 elections, using qualitative research methods. Through interviews and literature searches in the form of books and journals as well as other supporting references, this research yielded several important …

Migration Tales From A Small Consortium, Euemduan C. Osmera, Angela Kroeger, Keelan Weber
Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library
According to Oracle's white paper, Successful Data Migration, October 2011, up to 75% of new systems fail to meet expectations. That is quite a high number, and our small consortium felt this was true after we migrated to Ex Libris Alma/Primo VE in 2020! We often see librarians on Alma listservs asking for best practices, tips and tricks to manage data, or what metadata challenges to be aware of before migration. After working in our new system for two and a half years, we have insights based on our failures and successes. In this presentation, we will share warnings and …

A Body Without A Soul: Why Print Still Matters In Legal Research, Mari Cheney, Heather Simmons
Articles, Chapters and Online Publications
This article argues that print still has a place in legal research pedagogy and that some materials should still be collected in print in addition to online should the budget allow for it due to five primary reasons: (1) stability of legal information; (2) context; (3) information literacy; (4) algorithm bias; and (5) the discovery of information. Since many law library budgets are shrinking, there are creative ways for online legal publishers to make online material more print-like should libraries be unable to purchase both print and online material.

Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Independent students pursue higher education without financial, practical, and sometimes emotional support from family. For these students, asking for assistance when needed is key for college persistence. Decisions around help-seeking are shaped by multiple factors but are often portrayed as a solely individual decision. This study examined factors affecting help seeking among independent students enrolled in a four-year university. Within a process evaluation of a campus support program for independent students, we conducted in-depth, individual interviews with 23 independent students ages 18–23, as well as 5 university staff. Students described a range of psychological and relational factors influencing their willingness …
Grounding Qualitative Medical Research In Coherence, Not Standards, Carol Isaac, Linda Behar-Horenstein
Grounding Qualitative Medical Research In Coherence, Not Standards, Carol Isaac, Linda Behar-Horenstein
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative research publications have become more prominent in medical journals. However, in medical discourse, those researchers who are adhere to postpositivist (quantitative) paradigm often criticize diverse qualitative inquiry for a perceived lack of rigor. We suggest that qualitative research, just like quantitative research should be guided by methodological coherence rather than prescriptive standards. Coherence is defined as an alignment between epistemology, theoretical perspective, methodology, methods, and research questions. In the medical field, a lack of training in methodological diversity, a long-held post-positivist privileging, and insufficient methodological dialogue, promulgates reliance on quantitative analyses. Neglecting to articulate sufficient methodological detail has caused …

International Security Based On The United States Response Post To The South China Sea Claim By The People’S Republic Of China, Muhammad Budiana, Yusa Djuyandi
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Conflicts and tensions in the South China Sea are getting bigger after the People’s Republic of China claimed control over the Spratly and Paracel Islands and the waters that intersect with most of the countries in Southeast Asia. China’s efforts to place military forces on the two islands and the intensification of their ship patrols in the waters of the South China Sea indicate that China wants to strengthen its claims and hegemony, although of course these claims immediately receive a response from countries whose borders intersect in the South China Sea, mainly ASEAN member countries. This research used a …
