Analysis Of U.S. Think Tanks' Cognition Towards China-U.S. Competition In Quantum Science And Technology, Xiaoyu Li, Lei Gu, Haohan Meng

[Purpose/significance] Analyzing the perceptions of mainstream U.S. think tanks towards the China-U.S. competition in quantum science and technology contributes to examining their thinking frameworks and strategic judgments, providing strategic insights for China to effectively respond to U.S. containment and blockade in this field.

[Method/process] By selecting 13 research reports from 8 mainstream U.S. think tanks and utilizing the literature analysis method, this study systematically reviews the multidimensional perceptions of U.S. think tanks on the China-U.S. competition in quantum science and technology, thus revealing the underlying logic behind their perceptions.

[Purpose/significance] Starting from the related concepts of disciplinary topic evolution, this study comprehensively examines the forms and methods of disciplinary topic evolution. It identifies problems with existing concepts and shortcomings in current methods, and suggests directions for improvement, providing a reference for future research in this area.

[Method/process] Using a systematic review method, the literature on disciplinary topic evolution from the CNKI and Web of Science, as well as other academic platforms, was analyzed. This study aimed to evaluate students' perceptions of the reliability of generative AI tools in academic work, with a particular focus on the accuracy of citations produced by ChatGPT and the frequency of citation hallucinations. The study consisted of two instruments: a feedback survey and an assignment worksheet. The study was completed over the 2024- 2025 academic year and was administered to students enrolled in a for-credit information literacy course offered by the Florida Institute of Technology’s Evans Library. It gathered survey responses from 156 students and received assignment worksheet submissions from 188 students. These submissions yielded 512 AI-generated citations …

This learning brief is the fourth in a series to share findings from a 2023 statewide survey of over 700 members of Oregon’s home visiting workforce. In this brief, we share information about home visitors’ well-being across several dimensions, including 1) job-related well-being (job satisfaction, feelings of emotional/physical safety on the job, work-related stress, and job burnout); 2) personal well-being (financial strain, depression and anxiety); and 3) risk of staff turnover.

Second, we explore whether there are differences in these aspects of well-being for home visitors who have different backgrounds and life experiences. We then ask the question, “What things …

現時香港有不少獨老及雙老生活在舊樓，由於單位和樓宇老化，出現樓宇及人口「雙老化」現象。此研究探討長者在這種狀況下，居家安老遇到的問題。研究團隊訪問了29名60歲以上，並居住於樓齡50年以上私人樓宇，探討他們之生活體驗。

本研究發現生活在舊樓的長者需要面對多種問題，包括沒有升降機、升降機經常出現故障、維修升降機時間長、樓宇老化失修、結構出現安全隱患、劏房環境惡劣、租客議價能力低、鄰居的關系薄弱、樓宇公用空間污穢和保安差。受訪長者家庭由於沒有能力購買較好的私人單位，又不符合資格申請公屋，他們只能忍受較差的居住環境。本研究還發現受訪的舊樓長者較少使用社區照顧服務，部分受訪者認為現時居住單位不適合居家安老，原因是缺乏電梯和維修保養差，出入十分困難。另外，有被訪租住長者表示租金貴，應付吃力。

根據訪問結果，研究團隊有數方面之建議：(1) 加強長者外展服務，(2) 資助樓梯機服務，(3) 公屋安置殘疾長者，(4) 調高綜援租金津貼，(5) 改善劏房長者居住環境和 (6) 加快鹹水樓維修工作。

War Bonds And Household Saving In Wwii, Gillian Brunet, Eric Hilt, Matthew Jaremski

Household saving increased dramatically during World War II, reaching more than 19 percent of GDP. We study the effects of the war bond program implemented by the U.S. government on the level of household saving during the war. The bonds were heavily promoted in a series of drives, which encouraged thrift and associated subscriptions with patriotism, and also through a payroll deduction program. Yet as Friedman and Schwartz have noted, the main effect of the program may have been to change the form in which savings were held, rather than to increase saving. We use county-level data and an …

Going Gray Too Early? Effects Of Color On Facial Identification, Roman M. Pardo

This study investigated a possible bias in face-matching and ID-screening decision making- color incongruity (i.e., one face image presented in color and one in grayscale). Expanding on previous research, the 2x2 mixed methods experiment incorporated eye tracking measures (i.e., fixations). Participants N= 25 were randomly assigned to compare color or grayscale IDs (between groups comparison) to a 10 s color video of a person moving their head side to side. The task consisted of 2 practice and 48 face-matching trials with medium prevalence (MP, 24 match, 24 mismatch) presented as one of four pseudo-random and counterbalanced orders. Signal detection …

The rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States was due, or at least in part, to the resistance to health guidelines, minimal to no safety measures implemented by nearly half the U.S. citizens, and, to a lesser extent, the initial lack of understanding into the pathogenic mode of transmission. The present study examined links between the Dark (i.e.., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) and Light (i.e.., compassion, empathy, altruism) Triad of personality traits, the perceived threat level of COVID-19, and COVID-19 vaccine uptake in an undergraduate college sample (N = 147). Traditionally, these structures are inspected in situ by qualified engineers, a method that is high-cost, risky, time-consuming, and prone to error. Recently, researchers have explored innovative practices by using virtual reality (VR) technologies as inspection platforms. Despite such efforts, a critical question remains: can VR models accurately reflect real-world structural conditions? Beneath The Crap: Assessing Melt Potential Through Debris Thickness And Sub-Debris Ice Temperature On The Ponkar Glacier, Nepal, Delaney Hartgen

Understanding melt potential beneath debris-covered glaciers is critical to predicting future glacial mass loss in the Himalayas. This study investigates the relationship between debris thickness and sub-debris ice temperature on the Ponkar Glacier, Nepal, through a combination of field measurements and remote sensing analysis. In-situ data collected along a 200-meter transect revealed that thicker debris layers consistently corresponded with colder sub-debris ice temperatures, supporting the hypothesis that debris acts as a thermal insulator. Surface ice temperatures remained near 0 °C regardless of debris thickness. Remote sensing products, including NDVI, albedo, and Landsat thermal data, provided additional spatial context, although a …

Considering the challenges of climate change, it is imperative to understand hydroclimate variability in sensitive regions around the world, such as the Himalayas. Proxies such as lake cores, speleothems, dendrochronology, and others help provide high-resolution data on paleoclimatic conditions. Dendrochronology provides an ideal proxy for understanding recent hydroclimatic conditions. The data it provides is exceptional due to the cyclical and highly sensitive nature of tree rings. While the western and central Nepal Himalaya have been analyzed using these methods, sections of the eastern Nepal Himalaya have yet to be observed.
