This thesis explores graduate student perceptions from the Public Affairs and Security Studies (PASS) program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) regarding the role of universities in addressing interconnected environmental, economic, political, and social challenges, described here as a “polycrisis” (Lawrence et al., 2024). Using a mixed-methods approach, the study surveyed 42 students through Likert-scale questions and open-ended prompts. Results show students view economic inequality, political instability, and threats to democracy as the most pressing societal issues. While environmental issues were seen as important, they ranked lower in urgency. Students expect universities to address these challenges through …

Loneliness among African American older adults is a pressing public health concern, affecting more than one-quarter of this population and increasing the risk of premature death. This study explores the experiences of loneliness among African American older adults and examines the technologies they use, the purposes they serve, and their perceived role in mitigating loneliness. It also investigates barriers and facilitators to technology use for promoting social connection. Guided by the Social Support Theory and Technology Acceptance Model 3 (TAM3), the study centers the perspectives of an underrepresented population.

Racial discrimination is a common experience for Black adolescents. This study aimed to examine family support and religious support as a moderating variable between discrimination and mental health among Black adolescents. This study utilized data from an existing data set, the National Survey of American Life-Adolescent (NSAL-A). The NSAL-A included 1170 adolescents: 810 African American¹ and 360 Black Caribbean². The sample contained an equal amount of female (n = 608) and male (n = 562) Black adolescents³, who range in age from 13 to 17 years. This multi-manuscript dissertation comprises two interconnected articles that collectively explore facilitating Child-centered play therapy (CCPT) through telemental health (TMH) using a virtual playroom. Chapter Three includes a qualitative manuscript using thematic analysis to understand the experiences of eight counseling students who participated in a training where they learned how to create and utilize a virtual playroom, followed by a virtual play session with elementary-aged children. Cross-loadings are a common phenomenon in psychological research. Extant studies have focused primarily on measurement models, like confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and have shown that omitted cross-loadings can bias the inter-factor correlation. These results suggest that omitted cross-loadings might likewise bias structural paths in other structural equation models (SEMs), but this area remains under-investigated. Such an effect could impact the evaluation of third variable effects, like mediation, when estimated in a SEM framework.

This dissertation explores rural wellness through three interrelated studies, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods to examine disparities, perceptions of rurality, and demographic influences on well-being. The first study utilized the Five Factor Wellness Inventory (5F-WEL) to compare wellness scores between rural and non-rural individuals. Despite evidence supporting the benefits of couples counseling and relationship education, stigma and motivational factors influence engagement in these services. Based on a summer of ethnographic research in a subsection of Appalachian Ohio colloquially referred to as “The Valley,” this research challenges three narratives of this place that formulate a harmful Appalachian imaginary. The first narrative of industrycontrolled coal heritage is complicated by the way local people negotiate control over their own stories of coal and its existence outside of industry domain. The study of microphytobenthos (MPB) distributions in mudflat ecosystems is critical for understanding coastal ecosystem health and resilience. This research integrates high-resolution multispectral imagery and elevation data to predict chlorophyll-a concentrations in mudflats within the North Inlet estuary, South Carolina. Using statistical analyses, MSAVI was identified as the most effective spectral index for chlorophyll-a prediction, and a regression model was generated for this index, finding significant correlation with elevation. Temporal and spatial patterns of chlorophyll-a distributions were explored through predictive rasters, revealing significant relationships between MPB abundance and microtopography. Counselor wellness is crucial for clinician longevity and ethical practice. However, there is limited literature on the holistic wellness of Black women counselors. This manuscript probes into the lived experiences of Black women counselors, particularly in relation to the sociopolitical climate and racial injustices in the United States. Utilizing Consensual Qualitative Research, we examine the experiences of 15 Black women counselors working in counselor education, private practice, and community agencies within the Southeast Region of the United States. We anticipate this approach will enhance counselor education literature and foster increased peer support.

This study was conducted for the Sweet Grass County Chamber of Commerce to provide insight into the characteristics of attendees of the 2025 Crazy Mountain Fiber Fest. Fifty-two attendees of the event completed the survey. Results show that 92% of respondents were residents of Montana, of which 33% were from Sweet Grass County. Out-of-county respondents spent an average of 3.9 nights in Montana, reporting a total spending of $8,770.00, mostly in hotel/motel/bed and breakfasts. Results provide event organizers with useful data for future event planning, making improvements to the event, event marketing/promotion, and understanding the visitor spending associated with the …

We report the results from a driving simulator paradigm we developed to test the effects of simple verbal tasks on simultaneous driving performance. A total of 74 undergraduate students participated in two experiments in which they controlled a car using the steering wheel to track a moving target. The dependent measure, overall deviation from target, was continuously recorded. The role of midbrain dopamine (DA) activity in reward seeking and reinforcement learning is well-documented, contrasting the lesser-understood impact of inhibitory signaling on DAergic activity, especially in the context of aversive learning and avoidance. The rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) is a GABAergic midbrain structure activated by aversive stimuli and exerts inhibitory influence over ventral tegmental area (VTA) DAergic activity in response to aversive consequences. Stimulation of the RMTg decreases the firing rate of VTA DA neurons and direct inhibition of the RMTg – VTA circuit enhances persistent reward seeking despite aversive consequences, a major criterion of substance use disorder (SUD). …

The classical Median Voter Theorem (MVT) predicts that, in a two-party system with majority rule, candidates will converge toward the ideological center to capture the median voter. This logic, grounded in spatial models of political competition, assumes full voter participation and fails to account for the growing ideological polarization in modern democracies. This thesis reevaluates the MVT by incorporating probabilistic turnout into a utility-based model of voter behavior. This thesis critically examines how American high school students experience and make sense of global citizenship within the context of a commercial educational tour. Drawing on a case study of students from a Title I public high school in Florida, the research interrogates the narratives of civic transformation promoted by educational travel companies and explores how these narratives intersect with students’ lived realities. This study investigates how representations of personal common ground (PCG; viz., close relationships vs. strangers) and informational common ground (ICG; viz., shared world knowledge) interact in shaping a reader’s comprehension of verbal irony in fictional narratives. While previous research has shown that greater familiarity among story characters enhances readers’ comprehension of ironic statements made by the characters (Gibbs, 2000; Kreuz et al., 1999; Kreuz & Link, 2001; Pexman & Zvaigzne, 2004), the interplay between representations of PCG and ICG remains understudied. The study aims to test the existence of the N-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) and to determine the impact of fossil energy consumption and economic activity such as industrialization, urbanization, and trade openness on CO2 emissions in Indonesia from 1971 to 2021, using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL). The results of this study show that the relationship between per capita GDP and CO2 emissions in Indonesia has a reversed N-shape. Industrialization and per-capita consumption of fossil energy have a positive impact, while trade openness has a negative impact on CO2 per-capita emissions both in the short and long term.
