Critical Theory, Fascism, And Antifascism: Reflections From A Damaged Polity, Bradley Macdonald, Katherine E. Young

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

The presidency of Trump has produced an increasing sense that we are possibly moving into a period of fascism in the United States. In this essay, we wish to look closely at conditions which define this current political period by taking seriously Max Horkheimer’s plea to see the necessary relation of capitalism to protofascist potentials and fascist aspirations within our liberal democratic context. Drawing upon the work of Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, and others, we will look more closely at the particular political economic conditions that underlie the development of our one-dimensional society, in which “totalitarian” economic-technical control, rampant consumerism, …

The Political Economy Of The Apocalypse, James K. Galbraith

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

The world faces – let us say – four great threats, and because nothing really changes, we know their names: Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death. With modest modernization these categories can serve to guide our minds on a tour of the economic policy choices of the near and distant future.

Communicating Sustainability: Pollinators And North St. Louis Home Owners, Sarah Kelly, Tori Thoele Sep 2021

Communicating Sustainability: Pollinators And North St. Louis Home Owners, Sarah Kelly, Tori Thoele

Undergraduate Research Symposium

When talking about sustainability, lawncare may not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, the way we take care of our lawns affects the pollinators in the area. If we want to get people to behave in environmentally friendly ways, we need to find a way to reach them with messages that resonate. That means meeting them where they are and understanding their thoughts and opinions on lawncare. We did this by conducting three focus groups via Zoom with 4-6 participants in each group. We asked them questions about how they take care of their lawns, the pressure …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Academic libraries today are facing their greatest challenge since the explosion in tertiary education and academic publishing all over the world. In every institution, there is an existence of academic libraries to support teaching, learning and research work. Academic libraries were mostly established to support higher learning institutions in order to promote research teaching and learning in the universities. Faculty and students mostly make use of the library for information they may need to satisfy their needs in their academic discourse. This paper examines the relationship between service quality and users satisfaction at UHAS and also examines how user surveys …

The Value Of A Note: A Finding Aid Usability Study, Betts Coup Sep 2021

The Value Of A Note: A Finding Aid Usability Study, Betts Coup

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Finding aids have long been an essential part of archivists’ work. To create a finding aid is to create a surrogate of an archival collection. Multiple levels of description are used to distill information about the unique groupings and parts of a collection and to place its content into context. Archivists make decisions about what to include in a finding aid based on their own judgment as trained professionals, but also with the intent to create a finding aid that will be genuinely helpful to researchers. Indeed, as the revised principles of Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) state: “Users …

Rent Control In California: Policy Review, Brian J. Asquith, Shane M. Reed

Reports

The largest number of housing units subject to rent control can be found in California, but the policy environment is quite complex and is characterized by a series of interacting state and local laws. This complexity represents a significant barrier for researchers and policymakers seeking a clear and accurate picture of how rent control works in California, and how it incentivizes different behaviors among landlords and tenants alike. This technical report surveys rent control rules in California, with special attention paid to the recent statewide rent caps, historic developments, and the systems in Los Angeles and San Francisco. This report …

How Does Internet Delivered Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training Reduce Suicide Risk? Examining The Granularity Of Suicidal Ideation, Joseph Rameer, Chelsey Wilks Sep 2021

How Does Internet Delivered Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training Reduce Suicide Risk? Examining The Granularity Of Suicidal Ideation, Joseph Rameer, Chelsey Wilks

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Background: The gap between treatment need and treatment availability is troubling, and for people who endorse suicidal ideation and present with other complex behavioral dysfunction have more treatment barriers. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training, which effectively targets behaviors associated with emotion dysregulation such as suicidal behaviors, provides a fitting model amenable to computerization. While DBT has considerable evidence indicating that it is effective at ameliorating suicidal behavior, including thoughts, it is unclear how suicidality is reduced within this population. This study is a secondary data analysis of a pilot randomized control trial evaluating the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of …
