Finding The “Heart” In The Green: Conducting A Bibliometric Analysis To Emphasize The Need For Connecting Emotions With Biophilic Urban Planning, Christopher Tirri, Hunter Swanson, Mahbubur Meenar

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Although there is a robust body of literature exploring the relationship between biophilic urban planning (BUP) and public health and well-being, there is a dearth of scholarship on the emotional components of BUP. It is crucial to understand these sentiment-related elements, so planners can assign “human value” to green spaces as a strategy for emphasizing the need to thoughtfully implement and properly maintain them in urban environments. Furthermore, humans’ emotional experiences with green spaces may also reveal hidden or unexpected functions of those spaces. To confirm this lack of emphasis on emotions in BUP, we used Scopus to conduct a …

During Natural Viewing, Neural Processing Of Visual Targets Continues Throughout Saccades, Atanas D. Stankov, Jonathan Touryan, Stephen Gordon, Anthony J. Ries, Jason Ki, Lucas C. Parra

Publications and Research

Relatively little is known about visual processing during free-viewing visual search in realistic dynamic environments. Free-viewing is characterized by frequent saccades. During saccades, visual processing is thought to be suppressed, yet we know that the presaccadic visual content can modulate postsaccadic processing. To better understand these processes in a realistic setting, we study here saccades and neural responses elicited by the appearance of visual targets in a realistic virtual environment. While subjects were being driven through a 3D virtual town, they were asked to discriminate between targets that appear on the road. Using a system identification approach, we separated overlapping …

The Power Of Tolerance Vs. Unselfishness As A Cultural Determinant Of Cooperation, Kimmo Eriksson, Brent Simpson, Irina Vartanova Sep 2021

The Power Of Tolerance Vs. Unselfishness As A Cultural Determinant Of Cooperation, Kimmo Eriksson, Brent Simpson, Irina Vartanova

Faculty Publications

Cooperation in collective action problems and resource dilemmas is often assumed to depend on the values of the individuals involved, such as their degree of unselfishness and tolerance. Societal differences in cooperation and cooperative norms may therefore result from cultural variation in emphasis on these personal values. Here we draw on several cross-national datasets to examine whether society-level emphasis on unselfishness and tolerance and respect for other people predict how societies vary in cooperation [in a continuous prisoner’s dilemma (PD)] and in norms governing cooperation [in a common pool resource dilemma (CPR)]. The results suggest that high levels of cooperation …

Developing An E-Learning Theory For Interaction And Collaboration Using Grounded Theory: A Methodological Approach, Rachael Njeri Kibuku Dr., Daniel O. Ochieng Prof, Agnes N. Wausi Prof

The Qualitative Report

Grounded Theory (GT) is becoming an increasingly prevalent research methodology in many fields. Although researchers use it in qualitative and quantitative studies, it is more popular with qualitative studies, as evidenced by the citations from previous research. This paper aims to document and present how we used GT in our qualitative research to construct an e-learning theory for interaction and collaboration. It also includes the justification of GT. We adopted and adapted the constructivist GT (CGT). Therefore, this paper discusses the CGT methodology, its philosophical, ontological and epistemological perspectives. It also includes the research design that captures how we sampled …

Challenges In Conducting Online Videoconferencing Qualitative Interviews With Adolescents On Sensitive Topics, Salima Moez Meherali, Samantha Louie-Poon

The Qualitative Report

In the wake of COVID-19, researchers are seeking innovative data-collection methods. Computer-mediated communication platforms have played a pivotal role among these pursuits. However, conducting online interviews present challenges to both researchers and participants. Online data-collection forces researchers to give up control over the study environment due to the varying location participants partake in interviews. Consequently, researchers can no longer fully guarantee the confidentiality and privacy of the researcher-participant conversations. Participants may face difficulties if being asked to disclose private information in the presence of family members. These challenges are heightened when conducting online interviews with adolescents on sensitive topics. Thus, …

Tracing The Roots Of Disjunction : Dutertismo And The Discourse Of Liberal Democracy In The Philippines, Kristine Marie Tayo Reynaldo Sep 2021

Tracing The Roots Of Disjunction : Dutertismo And The Discourse Of Liberal Democracy In The Philippines, Kristine Marie Tayo Reynaldo

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This dissertation examines Dutertismo as an event in the context of what it put forwards as the problem-spaces of Philippine postcolonial modernity: nationalism, democracy, and development. Specifically, it investigates the substance of the contemporary disjunction between the discourse of liberal democracy, which often frames critiques of Dutertismo, and Philippine social experience. Its objective is to examine the underlying causes of the democratic "crisis" that Dutertismo represents, both material/structural and discursive/ideological.

“Dutertismo,” a populist political movement and discourse, is characterized by its subversion of the inherited norms and mores of Philippine society, and consolidation of popular support for a charismatic leader …

Becoming A Place Of Unrest : Environmental Crisis And Ecophenomenological Praxis, Robert Booth Sep 2021

Becoming A Place Of Unrest : Environmental Crisis And Ecophenomenological Praxis, Robert Booth

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

The key to mitigating the environmental crisis isn’t just based on science; it depends upon a profound philosophical revision of how we think about and behave in relation to the world.

Our ongoing failure to interrupt the environmental crisis in a meaningful way stems, in part, from how we perceive the environment—what Robert Booth calls the "more-than-human world.” Anthropocentric presumptions of this world, inherited from natural science, have led us to better scientific knowledge about environmental problems and more science-based—yet inadequate—practical “solutions.” That’s not enough, Booth argues. Rather, he asserts that we must critically and self-reflexively revise how we perceive …

Reimagining Public Safety In The Aftermath Of George Floyd, William J. Benet, Joseph Mcmillan

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Following the murder of George Floyd, the U.S. Congress called upon the National Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) to play a role in the reimagining of policing in America and a transformation of policing from a warrior to a guardian mentality. In turn, NOBLE partnered with the Institute for Polarities of Democracy (also referred to as the Institute) to conduct an analysis of the 21st century policing report. In this article we summarize the results of a year-long Phase 1 analysis carried out by the Institute and NOBLE. The Phase 1 analysis was conducted with support from the …

Towards A Biblical Foundation For A Philosophy Of Library Sociality, Terry Dwain Robertson Sep 2021

Towards A Biblical Foundation For A Philosophy Of Library Sociality, Terry Dwain Robertson

Journal of Adventist Libraries and Archives

In this essay, I focus on the sociality of librarianship in the academic setting. How should we as library workers think about the communities we serve? What mindset should guide our interactions with the people who seek our services? How should library workers think about how we collaborate to serve our public? As a profession, librarianship has a solid public service orientation, evidenced by its best community outreach, advocacy, and hospitality practices. Can Biblical teachings emphasized within the Seventh-day Adventist faith community be foundational for this ethos? Does faith integration matter? Correlating insights from Tuomela on group agency, Lankes on …

The Interaction And Progression Of Adolescent Substance Use And Co-Occurring Mental Health Problems And Social Support: A Latent Growth Modeling Approach, Jeremiah D. Simmons

Psychology ETDs

Background: Few studies have examined a reciprocal parallel process longitudinal trajectory of adolescent substance use and mental health problems simultaneously, and none have described this parallel process for adolescents receiving outpatient substance use treatment. No studies have examined how social support may account for deviations outside the overall trajectories for substance use or mental health problems. Method: Secondary data analysis examined a longitudinal parallel process latent growth model between mental health and substance use problems among adolescents who received outpatient substance use treatment. Results: Findings suggest that mental health and substance use problems are associated both initially and longitudinally, and …

Tutors’ Beliefs About Language And Roles: Practice As Language Policy In Emi Contexts, Marion Heron, Doris Dippold, Necmi Aksit, Tijen Aksit, Jill Doubleday, Kara Mckeown

All Works

It has been well established that for all students, but particularly second language (L2) English speaking students, academic English speaking skills are key to developing specialist terminology and disciplinary content in an English as a medium of instruction (EMI) context. However, what is less clear in many contexts is the institutional language policy necessary to guide and support both L2 English speaking students and disciplinary tutors. In this paper, we focus on disciplinary tutors’ beliefs of language and their roles with respect to language support to surface implicit and covert language policies. We argue that in the absence of explicit …

Delineating Conservation Areas For Cohabiting Species: An Example Of Vernal Pond Conservation From Fort Stewart In Georgia, United States, Yicheng Wang, Hayri Önal, Sahan T. M. Dissanayake

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Military installations are valuable in global biodiversity conservation as they secure representative ecosystems from land conversion and protect many threatened or endangered species. Selecting suitable areas for biodiversity conservation within military installations is a challenging problem as this must not impede military training activities. The issue gets more complicated when considering multiple cohabiting species in a metacommunity with species dependency. In this paper, we present an example for the conservation of two cohabiting species, Gopher Tortoise (GT) and Gopher Frog (GF), located within the boundaries of a military installation, Fort Stewart, Georgia, United States. The GF depends on both locations …

The concept of neology can be defined as an enrichment which affects a given language at different levels, phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic, Semantic neology is a special case of polysemy; a new meaning for an already existing unit. This is a change which affects the meaning without a concurrent change in the signifying form of the lexeme.

Lethalics and the free indirect style: on the road to intertextual parody

Literary works would have a memory. Here is a postulate which would make us consider intertextuality as "a library where each trans / elm text. others which modify it. The author, to borrow an expression from Umberto Eco, should certainly "die so as not to interfere with the progress of his work" His death without his knowledge, since it can be buried even during his lifetime, is in any case a theoretical commitment which allows the dialogue between the texts to be enriched and to always make this …

Syntax of the complex sentence: the case of the relative clause in Amazigh (Tachelhit)

After a brief presentation of the complex sentence in Amazigh, we will focus, in this article, on the study of the relative clause and on the analysis of its structure. We will try to demonstrate, by relying on formal criteria such as position and syntactic function, that there is indeed a homogeneous class of relative pronouns and a relative subordinate with its specificities but also that it may have in common with other languages.

Peripheral area in a dynamic coastline, Tarfaya is a small town in decline. Indeed, the geostrategic location of Cap Juby, a former counter on the coast Atlantic facing the Canary Islands, has not benefited the flourishing of a coastal town once dynamic on the Marrakech-Tombouctou caravan route. Hit hard by the silting up and short-circuited economically by the two port cities of the region, namely Laayoune and Tan-Tan, Tarfaya displays jerky demographics, urban structures bordering on non-regulatory and an economy of crisis faced with society which remains a victim of inactivity of unemployment.

On The Morpho-Syntactic Peculiarities Of "Laysa" A Minimalist Program Approach, Mohamed Elghazi

Dirassat

The inventory of the negation system in Standard Arabic consists of five commonly used negation elements, (viz.laa, lam, Zan, maa, and laysa), (Abbas, H. 1975). They have different distributional and/or temporal properties. However, the properties of laysa are the most peculiar of all the others (Benmamoun1992).For instance, at the morphological level, it behaves like an auxiliary: it is associated with a present tense specification and it inflects for agreement morphology. At the distributional level, and contrary to the other negation elements, it seems independent of its predicate. In this study, conducted with in the minimalist frame work as developed …
