The Role Of The Socio-Cultural And Developmental Context On Special Education, 2010 Claremont McKenna College
The Role Of The Socio-Cultural And Developmental Context On Special Education, Amanda Lam
CMC Senior Theses
Existing research on inclusive education deals primarily with the effectiveness of inclusion programs and the theoretical frameworks behind their limitation. However, no extensive research has been conducted that explores the role of the socio-cultural context and the development level in determining the best way in which the educational needs of children with special needs can be met. Recognizing that the effectiveness of different special education services may depend on the socio-cultural context as well as the development level, this literature review seeks to identify the ideal method of treating children with disabilities in developed and developing countries. By assessing the …
Resisting Technological Gravity: Using Guiding Principles For Instructional Design, 2010 Brigham Young University
Resisting Technological Gravity: Using Guiding Principles For Instructional Design, Jason K. Mcdonald
Faculty Publications
Instructional designers face tremendous pressure to abandon the essential characteristics of educational approaches, and settle instead for routine practices that do not preserve the level of quality those approaches originally expressed. Because this pressure can be strong enough to affect designers almost as gravity affects objects in the physical world, the metaphor of technological gravity has been proposed to describe why designers choose one type of practice over another. In this essay, I discuss how designers can develop guiding principles to help them resist technological gravity. I describe three types of principles, in the areas of what instruction is, …

Academic Persistence Factors For Students Who Delay College Entry, 2010 Seton Hall University
Academic Persistence Factors For Students Who Delay College Entry, Kirsten Tripodi
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Many more students begin college than complete their degrees. Retaining students to graduation has been the objective of many research studies; however, college students are changing. Changing demographics in the United States are creating changes in the college student population that could not have been foreseen years ago. In order inform policy in a changing climate, the research community must study the changes in the student body and what factors are important to the persistence of the new college student. This study will use Adelman's framework from The Toolbox Studies in conjunction with the Beginning Postsecondary Survey in order to …
Discounting And Pathological Gambling, 2010 University of Connecticut
Discounting And Pathological Gambling, Nancy M. Petry, Gregory J. Madden
Psychology Faculty Publications
Pathological gambling is a disorder characterized by excessive gambling. It often occurs in conjunction with substance use disorders, and research is beginning to examine the association between these disorders, especially with regard to impulsivity and discounting. In this chapter, we initially review the diagnosis and prevalence rates of pathological gambling, including its comorbidity with substance use disorders. We then describe relations between personality measures of impulsivity and pathological gambling. Gamblers' patterns of choices on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and measures of delay and probability discounting are covered in depth, and we discuss the degree to which these choices are …

A Delay-Discounting Primer, Gregory J. Madden, Patrick S. Johnson
Psychology Faculty Publications
Given the importance of research findings and the potential of further research to aid in the prediction and control of impulsivity, the primary focus of this chapter (and this book) is on choice and the failure of future events to affect current decisions. In this primer chapter, we consider two types of impulsive choice: (a) preferring a smaller-sooner reward while forgoing a larger-later one and (b) preferring a larger-later aversive outcome over a smaller-sooner one. The first of these is exemplified by the toy-pilfering child with whom we opened this chapter. Taking the toy is immediately rewarded, but it is …
Exploring Behavior Disorders In Children And Adolescents, 2010 University of Northern Iowa
Exploring Behavior Disorders In Children And Adolescents, Melissa Berger
Graduate Research Papers
Over the last century more and more children and adolescents have been diagnosed with behavior disorders. While problematic behaviors in adolescents have always been seen in and out of schools, it has only been in the last century that psychologists have looked deeper into the root of these behaviors. The term "behavior disorders" can in fact encompass a number of different disorders seen among both children and adolescents. The three specific disorders discussed in this paper will be attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHA), conduct disorder (CD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). A great deal of the time, children exhibiting these types of …

The Biology Of Reality Testing - Implications For Cognitive Education, Neil Greenberg
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
• This report explores the proposition that teaching effectiveness can be enhanced by accommodating the key differences between two complementary and deeply engrained modes of reality testing, each predominantly centered in different hemispheres of the brain. • (1) Correspondence involves “reality-testing” of a percept, the cerebral representation of an experience in the world. • (2) Coherence involves “textualizing”, that is, reality-testing of a percept by how easily it relates to previous and ongoing parallel and collateral experiences. • Confidence in the validity of any percept throughout development is related to the interplay of these key processes. • As organisms develop, …
Determining The Point Of Optimum Transferability Of Skill, 2010 Edith Cowan University
Determining The Point Of Optimum Transferability Of Skill, Amanda Puchar
Theses : Honours
Cognitive research assumes that practice on a task can lead to improved performance, most often resulting in the attainment of automatic performance and possibly the transfer of this learning to another task. This study examined all of these questions through the use of a computer generated counting task that required participants, consisting of 60 randomly selected university students and friends and family of the researcher, to count stars on a display screen and determine if the number of stars presented was an odd or even number. Coefficient of variation (CV) measures that calculated the variability for a given level of …

Out-of-school time constitutes a major context of social and emotional development for children across cultures. Because it is not constrained by school attendance, weekend time allows cultural and gender differences in time usage to emerge. In this study, children's weekend activities, choice, and some of the related emotional outcomes were examined for fourth-grade students in four countries. A total of 1,265 children of families from middle socioeconomic status in Bulgaria, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States completed an activity survey asking them to state their typical activity for each of 12 hours on Saturday, their enjoyment of the activity, and …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Cbt), Rhonda Turner, Susan M. Swearer Napolitano
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the role of cognition in the expression of emotions and behaviors. CBT assumes that maladaptive feelings and behaviors develop through cognitive processes which evolve from interactions with others and experiences in the environment. The goal of therapy is to identify the maladaptive cognitive process and to learn new ways of perceiving and thinking about events. These new ways of thinking will lead to more positive behavioral and emotional responses.
CBT has rapidly increased in popularity over the last forty years. It enjoys strong empirical support, and the body …
Research-Based Strategies To Promote Academic Integrity, 2010 Kennesaw State University
Research-Based Strategies To Promote Academic Integrity, Michele Dipietro
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
A cursory glance at the literature on cheating paints a bleak picture. In the past decades, the prevalence of cheating has hovered at discouragingly high level, with about 75% of students admitting to some sort of cheating, and with peaks of over 90% in some prevalence studies. Given these figures, where does a wellintentioned instructor start? A good place to start untangling this complex problem is to understand it better. Academic dishonest behaviors vary in their frequency, seriousness, and motivations behind them, but they have been extensively researched, and we can abstract general principles to conceptualize this problem. Once we …

Developing literacy and language proficiency in English is essential to thrive in school and in the workforce in American society. Research on cross-linguistic influences on text-level skills is scant, especially studies investigating reading comprehension among language-minority adults. The present study investigated the effects of cross-linguistic input and second language proficiency on second language reading comprehension among Spanish-speaking adults enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at a community college in New York City. The main research question was whether language-minority adults would comprehend printed text better if they read it in Spanish (L1) followed by English (L2) than …

The Effect Of Athletic Participation On Academic Achievement For High School Seniors In Eastern Tennessee, 2010 Liberty University
The Effect Of Athletic Participation On Academic Achievement For High School Seniors In Eastern Tennessee, David Andrew Gorman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This causal-comparative study with a narrative component investigated the effect athletic participation on the academic achievement of senior student-athletes and non-athletes who attended three public high schools in Eastern Tennessee. The impetus for the study was the conflicting research as it relates to the impact athletics participation had on academic success at the college and high school levels. Through student athlete and non-athlete comparisons of ACT scores and GPAs, the researcher found athletic participation did not affect academic achievement for high school seniors who graduated in 2009 from the three target high schools when compared to non-athletes. However, statistically significant …
