The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the potential impact of degree maps on facilitating student success. The concept grew out of quantitative evidence suggesting students using degree maps are more likely to enroll in our programs, continue in our programs, register for more classes per term, and have better graduation rates than those students who do not use a degree map. Our methodology included qualitative coding of focus group responses (n = 28) then using those emerging themes to inform a survey instrument to collect student perceptions about the degree map’s impact (n = 211). Undergraduate Economic Review
With the passing of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) has come a wave of economic analyses of education production functions attempting to explain what community and school characteristics affect achievement gaps and yearly growth in pass rates. Using standardized test data from the Illinois State Board of Education over the period of NCLB, I argue that there are ways to empirically re-define growth and student success that more effectively capture NCLB’s goals. The results in this paper show inherent differences between the three growth definitions employed and the educational experiences in the grades analyzed.

This study investigates beginning US elementary teachers’ competence for teaching mathematics and its development during teacher preparation and into the first 2 years of full-time teaching. Data are drawn from three longitudinal case studies and include the classroom video analysis survey, classroom observations and interviews about teachers’ instructional decisions, and whole-day shadowing. A multi-case study design was used to examine the processes of perception, interpretation, and decision making in participants’ comments on video clips of teaching episodes and in reflections about their own teaching. Presents an experimental training program initiated at Bank Street in 1955. Although Bank Street had been preparing college graduates for teaching in an intensive one-year program, faculty questioned whether they could put more teachers into elementary classrooms sooner, for they felt the societal pressures of a growing teacher shortage and questioning of the need for teacher education at all. What follows is a description of the experimental training program in which novice students without teaching experience enter Bank Street in the fall semester, and emerge in the spring carrying full teaching responsibility. The key component? Advisement.

A review of the literature revealed a lack of consistent expectations for professional behaviors required of level II fieldwork students. This study sought to obtain a consensus of perspectives of level II fieldwork educators by asking, “What are the essential professional behavior attributes for level II fieldwork students?” Delphi methodology was used to collect data in two rounds of surveys. In the first, 49 fieldwork educators listed professional behavior attributes they believed to be important for fieldwork students. The data was synthesized into themes for distribution in the second survey, which were identified as essential, non-essential, or site-specific by 53 …
