Asset Allocation, Risk Tolerance And Shortfall Risk, 2016 Butler University
Asset Allocation, Risk Tolerance And Shortfall Risk, Steven D. Dolvin
All Chapters
Asset allocation is the biggest driver of portfolio performance, particularly over the long-term. Moreover, it also is reflective of an investor's risk tolerance. The recent financial crisis has negatively impacted investment psychology, particularly among younger investors. As a result, the so-called "Generation-Y" has over half of their assets held in cash -- a "non-earning" asset. While this is safe, there is a risk of loss in value, as cash does not even hold up with inflation. In the long-term, such an allocation means a lower retirement balance--i.e., shortfall risk. Thus, these investors have essentially traded one type of risk for …

Workplace Bullying: Is Lack Of Understanding The Reason For Inaction?, 2016 Griffith University
Workplace Bullying: Is Lack Of Understanding The Reason For Inaction?, Sara Branch, Jane Murray
Jane Murray
At what point is the line crossed between a series of humorous work pranks and workplace bullying? This question is actually more complex than it looks. Take the very well publicized office complaint case of David Thorne and Simon Dempsey—a story that has taken social media sites and the wider Internet by storm over the last couple of years. Although it has now been revealed that the interactions between Thorne and Dempsey are somewhat fictitious (loosely based on actual interactions between the author and a previous coworker), the behaviors and their ensuing complaints provide a lens from which this question …
A Markov-Switching Structural Vector Autoregressive Model Of Boom And Bust In The Australian Labour Market, 2016 Flinders University, Adelaide
A Markov-Switching Structural Vector Autoregressive Model Of Boom And Bust In The Australian Labour Market, Noel Gaston, Gulasekaran Rajaguru
Gulasekaran Rajaguru
Major economic events, such as the global financial crisis, are episodes of identifiable duration that differ from other time periods. Using monthly data on the unemployment rate, labour force participation rate and employment for Australia for the period from 1978 to 2012, we estimate a Markov-switching SVAR model to examine the relationship between unemployment and labour force participation and the performance of the Australian labour market. Three distinct labour market regimes are identified. We find that the labour market switches between periods of low unemployment and high participation, prolonged periods of relative stability and short, sharp periods of high unemployment …

Determinants Of Vendor Profitability In Two Contractual Regimes: An Empirical Analysis Of Enterprise Resource Planning Projects, 2016 Santa Clara University
Determinants Of Vendor Profitability In Two Contractual Regimes: An Empirical Analysis Of Enterprise Resource Planning Projects, Stefan Hoermann, Tobias Hlavka, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar
Michael Schermann
In this paper, we investigate the effects of four determinants of vendor profitability in enterprise resource planning (ERP) outsourcing projects under two contractual regimes: fixed price (FP) contracts and time and material (TM) contracts. We hypothesize that effect sizes are larger under FP contracts than under TM contracts. From a transaction cost economics perspective, we hypothesize that project uncertainty and project size are negatively associated with vendor profitability. From a knowledge-based view of the firm perspective, we hypothesize that industry knowledge and client knowledge are positively associated with vendor profitability. We tested these hypotheses on a comprehensive archival data set …
Using The Default Option Bias To Influence Decision-Making While Driving, 2016 Santa Clara University
Using The Default Option Bias To Influence Decision-Making While Driving, Klaus Goffart, Michael Schermann, Christopher Kohl, Jörg Preißinger, Helmut Krcmar
Michael Schermann
Gaining a better understanding of human–computer interaction in multiple-goal environments, such as driving, is critical as people increasingly use information technology to accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously. Extensive research shows that decision biases can be utilized as effective cues to guide user interaction in single-goal environments. This article is a first step toward understanding the effect of decision biases in multiple-goal environments. This study analyzed data from a field experiment during which a comparison was made between drivers’ decisions on parking lots in a single-goal environment and drivers’ decisions in a multiple-goal environment when being exposed to the default option bias. …
Consolidating Findings From Business Process Change Case Studies Using System Dynamics: The Example Of Employee Morale, 2016 Santa Clara University
Consolidating Findings From Business Process Change Case Studies Using System Dynamics: The Example Of Employee Morale, Zuzana Kristekova, Marlen Christin Jurisch, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar
Michael Schermann
In this paper, we explore system dynamics as a useful approach to consolidate findings from case studies on business process change (BPC) projects. We compile data from 65 BPC case studies to develop a system dynamics simulation model that helps us to investigate ‘employee morale’ as an important construct in BPC projects. We show that such simulation models consolidate the complex and often non-linear findings from BPC case studies in a way that makes it available to discourse among researchers, lecturers and students as well as BPC professionals. Thus, this paper contributes to knowledge management and learning by suggesting system …

The Impact Of Family Economic Structure On Dual-Earners’ Career And Family Satisfaction, 2016 Netanya Academic College
The Impact Of Family Economic Structure On Dual-Earners’ Career And Family Satisfaction, Ronit Waismel-Manor, Asaf Levanon, Pamela S. Tolbert
Pamela S Tolbert
The present study builds on the explanatory power of the “doing gender” perspective to understand the effects of family economic structure on the family and career satisfaction of husbands and wives. Using data from a two-panel, couple-level survey of full-time employed middle-class families in the Northeastern United States, we find that when wives’ earnings increase relative to their husbands’, their career satisfaction significantly increases whereas their husbands’ is significantly depressed. In contrast, family economic structure has little effect on women’ and men’s level of family satisfaction, although we find a significant reduction in family satisfaction among couples who have recently …

Is Cheap Fashion Too Good To Be True? Consumer Perceptions Of Sustainability In The Fast Fashion Industry, 2016 University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Is Cheap Fashion Too Good To Be True? Consumer Perceptions Of Sustainability In The Fast Fashion Industry, Katrina Michele Laemmerhirt
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
This study looks to explore if consumers care about sustainability in the fast fashion industry or if they will continue to ignore lack of ethical and social practices for low prices. This study will analyze shopping and sustainable behaviors, customer knowledge, and consumption patterns between high frequency and low frequency fast fashion consumers. Based on this study’s findings I will determine if companies will need to change their business models in the future and will look into current steps fast fashion retailers are taking to become more environmentally conscious.
How Do Sharing Economy Companies Grow? A Comparison Of Internal And External Growth Patterns Of Airbnb And Uber, 2016 University of Tennessee, Knoxville
How Do Sharing Economy Companies Grow? A Comparison Of Internal And External Growth Patterns Of Airbnb And Uber, Piper Davis
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
When the term “sharing economy” is mentioned in the news and in recent academic papers, Airbnb and Uber are mentioned in the same breath. In 2016, these two firms are arguably the most popular and fastest-growing peer-to-peer companies in the world. This study examines the ways in which the two companies have grown since their founding. Growth is examined both externally (in terms of domestic and international market expansion) and internally (hiring for primary and support functions). Specifically, archived job postings are used to analyze how human capital requirements have changed over time, by both location and function. This research …
