Background: An increase in deep sternal wound infections (DSWI) within the cardiovascular surgery (CVS) department at a large midwestern teaching hospital among adult patients with an open sternotomy approach. Objective: To reduce the DSWI rate within the hospital’s CVS department. Methods: After gathering stakeholder input and observing the perioperative process, an extensive review of current literature was conducted to address the problem. Interventions that had literature support were then reanalyzed with stakeholder input for implementation selection, along with a cost-benefit analysis. Fast ripples (FR) are a biomarker of epileptogenic brain, but when larger portions of FR generating regions are resected seizure freedom is not always achieved. To evaluate and improve the diagnostic accuracy of FR resection for predicting seizure freedom we compared the FR resection ratio (RR) with FR network graph theoretical measures. In 23 patients FR were semi-automatically detected and quantified in stereo EEG recordings during sleep. MRI normalization and co-registration localized contacts and relation to resection margins. Introduction: Spinal anesthesia is commonly used for various surgical procedures. Prediction of spinal anesthesia block height is always a challenging task for anesthetists. Higher than desired levels of spinal anesthesia blocks are associated with serious side effects, while inadequate block height does not provide satisfactory surgical anesthesia. In this study, we observed the relationship between the ratio of trunk length (TL) and square of the abdominal circumference (AC²) and spinal anesthesia sensory block height in geriatric patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

Robotic mitral valve repair (MVR) is an emerging option to treat degenerative valve disease. Compared to open thoracotomy, robotic mitral valve surgery has been shown to afford decreased postoperative length of stay with comparable rates of mortality and morbidity. Among the variety of techniques for robotic MVR, the totally endoscopic approach remains the least invasive method to date. In this report, we describe our technique for totally endoscopic robotically-assisted MVR. In particular, we seek to highlight the use of several unique techniques in MVR. Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) in the setting of atrial fibrillation is a life-threatening abdominal emergency that requires immediate localization and clinical intervention to restore mesenteric perfusion for the prevention of developing bowel necrosis. As bowel ischemia rapidly progresses, serum metabolic derangements become prominent, guiding practitioners on effective therapeutic options. Ultimately, mesenteric ischemia progressively bolsters the possibility of a patient developing multiple organ dysfunction. Due to this minacious pathogenesis, rapid time to diagnosis can become the difference between life and death. Introduction: African Americans (AA) are more likely to experience violence-related trauma compared to White subjects and experience poorer outcomes in many facets of traumatic injury. However, previous analysis of males with penetrating colon trauma has identified no difference in mortality and decreased morbidity in AAs compared to Whites. Outcomes in AAs following colon injury requiring surgery are assessed in the current study.
