PURPOSE: Previous literature suggests a relationship between carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and heart failure (HF), indicating that patients with CTS are more likely to experience cardiomyopathy. Amyloid deposition leading to CTS may be prodromal for the development of amyloid cardiomyopathy. We hypothesized that patients undergoing surgery for CTS would have an increased risk of HF compared to those who did not undergo surgery.

BACKGROUND: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) presents a major clinical challenge in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), requiring lower extremity revascularization (LER) to mitigate adverse cardiovascular and limb outcomes. Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) has been implicated in cardiovascular risk, but its role in patients with T2DM and CLTI undergoing revascularization remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To compare the impact of upper versus lower lumbar decompression on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing L1-L2, L2-L3, L4-L5, or L5-S1 single-level elective decompression with 1-year PROMs were identified. Included PROMs were the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), visual analog scale (VAS) back and leg, and Short Form-12 physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component scores. Minimal clinically important differences (MCID) were calculated. Multivariable regressions assessed the independent predictive ability of operative level controlling for demographic confounders.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a risk factor for increased transfusions. However, various definitions of anemia have been described in scientific literature and a consensus on how to appropriately diagnose anemia or who to preoperatively optimize is lacking. BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) on long-term patient outcomes when used as an adjuvant to acetabular repair of the labrum.

METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were completed following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Included in the analysis were controlled studies which assessed functional outcomes via the International Hip Outcome Tool-33 (iHOT-33) 12 or 24 months after acetabular repair with BMAC adjunct. OBJECTIVES: Risk factors for varicose veins (VVs) such as female sex, pregnancy, and obesity are high estrogen states, yet the role of systemic progestins with or without estrogens (SPEs) in VV management is not well characterized. Purpose: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) have limited efficacy in pleural mesothelioma. We investigated the role of Dickkopf WNT signaling pathway inhibitor 3 (DKK3) in overcoming treatment resistance.

Patients and methods: We performed preclinical studies to elucidate DKK3's role in ICI-resistant mouse mesothelioma. Based on these findings, we conducted a single-arm, phase II clinical trial of a combination of Ad-SGE-DKK3 and nivolumab for chemotherapy-refractory epithelioid pleural mesothelioma, with the objective response rate as the primary outcome.

Objective: Micropenis is a condition with significant physical and psychological implications caused mainly by decreased androgen action in penile development. Kctd13-knockout (Kctd13-KO) mice have micropenis, cryptorchidism, and fertility defects because of reduced levels of androgen receptor (AR) and SOX9. Endometriosis is a gynecological condition characterized by the uncontrolled growth of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of mitochondria in NP cells and articular chondrocyte health. Since the understanding of mechanisms governing mitochondrial dynamics in these tissues is lacking, we investigated the role of OPA1, a mitochondrial fusion protein, in their homeostasis. OPA1 knockdown in NP cells altered mitochondrial size and cristae shape and increased the oxygen consumption rate. Background/Objectives: Total thymectomy is currently the gold standard operation for treating thymoma. However, recent studies have suggested the potential health consequences of thymus removal in adults, including possible increased autoimmune disease and all-cause mortality. In this context, we assess oncologic outcomes following total vs. partial thymectomy for early-stage thymoma. Background: Although traditional teaching advocates that microsurgical anastomoses should be performed to uninjured vessels outside the zone of injury (ZOI), there is no defined way to assess the extent of the ZOI, and uninjured vessels may not be available. Immunologically cold tumors present a significant challenge in cancer treatment due to their limited baseline immune infiltration and resistance to immunotherapy. Cancer vaccines offer a promising strategy to overcome this barrier by introducing high-quality, tumor-relevant antigens that can stimulate an effective anti-tumor immune response. BACKGROUND: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common general surgery operations. Some evidence suggests that female patients are at greater risk of chronic postoperative pain and hernia recurrence. We investigated rates of chronic inguinal pain and recurrence after inguinal hernia repair in both male and female patients using the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative database.
