Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) is a rare congenital heart disease that commonly results in congestive heart failure due to exposure of the anatomic right ventricle to systemic pressures. Additional anatomic abnormalities, such as situs inversus, in which the viscera are mirror images of normal anatomy, or dextrocardia in which the heart apex is located on the patient’s right, once were contraindications to transplant in the treatment of advanced heart failure. Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a rare cause of spinal cord compression (SCC). EMH represents the growth of blood cells outside of the bone marrow and occurs in a variety of hematologic illnesses, including various types of anemia and myeloproliferative disorders. Although EMH usually occurs in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes, it may also occur within the spinal canal. When this occurs, the mass effect can compress the spinal cord, potentially leading to the development of neurological deficits. We present a case of SCC secondary to EMH. BACKGROUND: There are various factors that can influence the survival of patients receiving venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO). Vascular complications from femoral cannulation are common and are potentially serious. We analyzed the impact of vascular complications on survival of patients receiving VA ECMO.

METHODS: Patients supported with VA ECMO by means of femoral cannulation from October 2010 to November 2014 were enrolled in this study. Data were gathered retrospectively by reviewing our institutional database. Abstract Purpose: The purpose is to study whether pain and inflammation in knee joint osteoarthritis (OA) are associated with local synovial neuronal changes. Methods: Synovial biopsies were harvested from the medial and lateral knee compartments from OA patients undergoing total joint replacement surgery. All patients had predominant pain at the medial joint compartment. Pain and knee joint function were evaluated by knee society score (KSS). Synovial inflammation was analyzed by histopathological analysis and expression of growth associated protein-43 (GAP-43), sensory (SP, CGRP) and autonomic (NPY, VIP, TH) neuropeptides was studied by single and double immunohistochemistry techniques. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide and the fourth most common cause of death. These are staggering statistics for a disease that can essentially be cured if caught early and the pathology is favorable to therapeutic intervention. There is currently a drastic decrease in five year survival as the cancer stage increases from locally confined disease to metastatic disease. Unintentional injuries are a leading cause of death in childhood globally. Injuries lead to emotional trauma and financial burden for children, parents, and society. Here are the frequencies of unintentional injuries in children presented to the emergency and paediatric surgery clinics of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, from January to December 2012. Aretrospective chart review of children aged 0 day to 14 years presented with falls, burns, foreign body ingestion or inhalation, poisoning, fingers caught in doors, electrocution injuries and drowning, was conducted. Abstract:

The coexistence of lung cancer with an endobronchial hamartoma is infrequent, and requires accurate oncologic evaluation of the endobronchial lesion prior to potential surgical treatment of the lung cancer. We describe a patient who presented with an undiagnosed endobronchial mass and and a biopsy-proven lung cancer which were successfully managed by a staged approach using initial bronchoscopic resection of the endobronchial lesion and subsequent lobectomy for squamous cell lung cancer.

Background: Split cord malformation (SCM) is typically present at a single level but rarely, may be present at multiple levels in the spinal cord and can be associated with a wide array of lesions such as myelomeningoceles, lipomas, teratomas, and dermal sinus tracts (DSTs).
Case description: We describe a case of a 15-month-old female child who presented with high-grade fever and progressive motor weakness in the lower limbs. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of SCM along with an epidural abscess, DST, and dermoid cyst. Approximately 35,000 children are born in the US each year with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). Surgical timing for many of these conditions is elective, and the distribution of surgical cases, therefore, varies with time of year. The hypothesis of this project is that time of the year for surgery is associated with mortality, length of hospital stay (LOS), and total hospital costs. A retrospective, cohort study was performed, using the Pediatric Health Information Systems (PHIS) Database to investigate these relationships.

Background: Neurorehabilitation is an important aspect of continuing care for neurosurgical patients with functional disability. In developing countries, where formal home nursing frequently is unavailable, ensuring care after discharge is a difficult task. Training attendants to provide nursing care is an alternate option. In this study, we compared the outcomes of patients nursed by family members versus those looked after by a professional nurse.
