Comparison Of Post-Operative Pain Control Modalities For Pectus Excavatum Repair, Charlene Dekonenko

Presentations

This study compares patient outcomes following pectus excavatum repair using cryoablation, epidural, or patient-controlled analgesia for post-operative pain control. Primary outcome: length of stay
Secondary outcomes: operative time, pain scores, time to only oral analgesics.
Conclusion: Intercostal cryoablation during minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair significantly reduces length of stay and time to oral analgesics alone.

Improving Perioperative Warming Of Surgical Patients: Implementation Of A Warming Protocol, Maghy Schrage 2019 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

Improving Perioperative Warming Of Surgical Patients: Implementation Of A Warming Protocol, Maghy Schrage

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Despite the ample amount of knowledge and interventions available to keep patients warm in the operating room, the issue of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia continues to be a problem affecting surgical patients. Unfortunately, even a mild degree of hypothermia can increase a patient’s chance for negative outcomes such as surgical site infections, bleeding, and higher risk for mortality. The project involved development of a warming protocol/guideline for a small community hospital. The implementation process consisted of two separate presentations tailored to educate both nursing and anesthesia staff about the importance of warming patients, reimbursement initiatives, and appropriate interventions.

The project study …

Evaluation Of The Role Of Microvascular Pathology On Peripheral Artery Disease, Constance Mietus 2019 University of Nebraska Medical Center

Evaluation Of The Role Of Microvascular Pathology On Peripheral Artery Disease, Constance Mietus

Theses & Dissertations

Background: Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) begins with atherosclerotic narrowing of arteries, including those that supply the legs. Individuals with PAD experience pain during walking, which becomes increasingly limiting. Studies from our group and others have shown that a myopathy is present in the skeletal muscle of PAD patients, and is characterized by myofiber degeneration, fibrosis, and remodeling of vessels ranging from 50 – 150 mm in diameter. However, microvascular pathology, particularly of the smallest microvessels (5 – 15 mm in diameter) remains poorly characterized. Furthermore, little is known about the relationships between microvascular architecture, microperfusion, and patient walking performance. We …

Arthroscopic Medial Meniscus Transplant Utilizing A Multi-Technique Fixation, Elizabeth Ford, Michael DeFrance, Sean McMillan 2019 Rowan University

Arthroscopic Medial Meniscus Transplant Utilizing A Multi-Technique Fixation, Elizabeth Ford, Michael Defrance, Sean Mcmillan

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Arthroscopic medial meniscus transplantation can be a daunting procedure for even the most skilled surgeon. While all-inside suture fixation devices have improved, the ability to successfully perform this procedure via arthroscopy is reliant upon the surgeon's ability to utilize a variety of fixation techniques. Based upon the review of the literature, this paper is the first of it's kind describing the methodology and algorithm for completing an arthroscopic medial meniscus transplant using four techniques.

Mri Findings After A Subchondroplasty Procedure Of The Ankle: A Case Report, Michael E. Calderone, Mansi Patel, Matthew K. Brant 2019 Rowan University

Mri Findings After A Subchondroplasty Procedure Of The Ankle: A Case Report, Michael E. Calderone, Mansi Patel, Matthew K. Brant

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the ankle is a common disease and it is estimated that almost 1% of the world’s adult population have a painful ankle. Often in patients who fail conservative treatment, the use of an MRI is deemed necessary to identify pathologies. Bone marrow lesions (BMLs) seen on MRI have been recognized as a source of the ankle pain. Majority of the BMLs fluctuate in size over time and are seen as hyperintense lesions on MRI.We present MRI findings of a patient following arthroscopy with subchondroplasty.

Postoperative Cholecystitis From Nathanson Liver Retractor During Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy, Lauren D. Gleich, Mihir G. Thaker, Gordon A. Brown

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Proper visualization of the surgical field during any procedure is one of the most imperative elements of surgery. The tools used to obtain this goal come with their own set of risks. This report describes a patient who developed postoperative acalculous cholecystitis (PAC) after use of a Nathan liver retractor. PAC is a rare complication of urologic surgery and is often more severe than acalculous cholecystitis (AC), leading to significant morbidity.

Pre-Operative Risk Of Medical Complications Varies By Health Insurance Carrier In Moderately Obese Women: Medicaid V Medicare V Private V Self-Pay, Paul Osterdahl, Melissa Gott, Amanda Sundling, Gus J. Slotman 2019 Rowan University

Pre-Operative Risk Of Medical Complications Varies By Health Insurance Carrier In Moderately Obese Women: Medicaid V Medicare V Private V Self-Pay, Paul Osterdahl, Melissa Gott, Amanda Sundling, Gus J. Slotman

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Introduction: Clinical variation by health insurance status in mixed sex bariatric surgery populations is reported, but such variation among moderately obese women is unknown.

Objective: to identify pre-operative variation by health insurance in female surgical patients.

Conclusions: Pre-operative characteristics of moderately obese women vary by insurance. Medicare’s highest risk for cardiopulmonary problems and diabetes, and Medicaid’s highest asthma, abdominal-hepatobiliary, and psychological/behavioral complications should be considered in managing moderately obese women subscribing to these carriers.

A Case Of Atraumatic Posterior Thigh Compartment Syndrome, Nailah Mubin, Brian Katt 2019 Rowan University

A Case Of Atraumatic Posterior Thigh Compartment Syndrome, Nailah Mubin, Brian Katt

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Compartment syndrome(CS) occurs when intra-compartmental pressures exceeds to a point where arterial, venous and lymphatic circulation of local tissues, muscles and nerves is compromised. CS is most common after a traumatic injury and usually occurs in the leg or forearm and less commonly in the thigh. Thigh compartment syndrome is rare due to its larger size and more compliant borders. We present a case of nontraumatic compartment syndrome in the posterior thigh associated with rhabdomyolysis and a sciatic nerve palsy which then required emergent fasciotomy. The patient's course was further complicated by acute renal failure due to the rhabdomyolysis and …

Panniculectomy Performed In Conjunction With Gynecologic Surgery In The Morbidly Obese Patient - A Nsqip Analysis And Meta-Analysis Of The Literature, Shayoni Nag, Tirth Patel, Steven C. Bonawitz

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Purpose: Panniculectomy is a common procedure in plastic surgery, often performed following massive weight loss and in morbidly obese patients. It can be performed in combination with various gynecologic procedures based on the rational that it will reduce complication rates.1, 2, 3 These studies fail to provide proof of these claims for reasons including study design and the lack of inclusion of both morbidly obese and non-morbidly obese patients. Recent medical practice has focused increasingly on minimizing patient morbidity and trends in reimbursement are moving towards penalizing practices which increase complications.

Methods/Results:We reviewed the NSQIP database to assess …

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Introduction: Annually, millions of adults suffer hip fractures. The mortality rate post a hip fracture is 7%-10% at 30 days and 10%-20% at 90 days. Observational data suggest that early surgery can improve these outcomes in hip fracture patients. We designed a clinical trial-HIP fracture Accelerated surgical TreaTment And Care tracK (HIP ATTACK) to determine the effect of accelerated surgery compared with standard care on the 90-day risk of all-cause mortality and major perioperative complications.
Methods and Analysis: HIP ATTACK
is a multicentre, international, parallel group randomised controlled trial (RCT) that will include patients ≥45 years of age and diagnosed …
