Background: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) is a typical immunogenic malignant tumor with a dismal 5-year survival rate lower than 20%. Although miRNA-3648 (miR-3648) is expressed abnormally in EA, its impact on the tumor immune microenvironment remains unknown. In this study, we sought to identify immune-related genes (IRGs) that are targeted by miR-3648 and develop an EA multigene signature.

Methods: The gene expression data of 87 EA tumor samples and 67 normal tissue samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) database were downloaded, respectively. OBJECTIVE: Comparing outcomes after cricopharyngeal myotomy (CM) performed by otolaryngologists (OTO) and non-otolaryngologists (NO).

METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the 2014-19 ACS-NSQIP database (American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program) of patients who underwent open CM (CPT code 43030) as their primary procedure. Analyzed variables include medical comorbidities, operative time, the total length of stay, readmission, reoperation, concurrent procedures, postoperative complications, and postoperative diagnoses. 183 patients were included, 97 (53%) females and 86 (47%) males. 120 had surgery by OTO and 63 by NO.

RESULTS: There were no differences in preoperative morbidity. OTO had more outpatient surgeries compared …

OBJECTIVES: Use of off-label tissue graft materials, such as acellular dermal matrix (ADM), for in utero repair of severe spina bifida (SB), where primary skin layer closure is not possible, is associated with poor neurological outcomes. The cryopreserved human umbilical cord (HUC) patch has regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-scarring properties, and provides watertight SB repair. We tested the hypothesis that the HUC is a superior skin patch to ADM for reducing inflammation at the repair site and preserving spinal cord function.

Prognostic factors for clinical outcome after spinal cord (SC) injury (SCI) are limited but important in patient management and education. There is a lack of evidence regarding magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical outcomes in SCI patients. Klebsiella pneumoniae has emerged as the predominant pathogenic agent of liver abscess in Asia, and the incidence is increasing worldwide. Hypervirulent strains are associated with septic metastatic dissemination in the eyes, lungs, and central nervous system, causing severe morbidity. We present the case of a 54year old man, with no previous comorbidities, admitted in emergency for the blind red painful eye. Further investigation documented septic endophthalmitis with transscleral extension and orbital cellulitis. Thoraco-abdominal computed tomography evidenced a hepatic abscess as the locus of the primary infection. The most serious complications of Covid-19 are due to the development of micro-thrombosis in various organs and systems as a result of the high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 1 and 6) which initiate the activation of coagulation and the generation of thrombin. We present our experience with esophageal atresia associating gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in the last 10 years.
