Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Microscopic colitis is clinically suspected in patients with recurrent watery diarrhea and the absence of gross pathologic changes in the colon by endoscopic examination. The diagnosis is established only by microscopic evaluation of colonic biopsies. Microscopic colitis is currently classified into three subgroups: collagenous colitis (CC), lymphocytic colitis (LC), and combined CC and LC. The incidence rates are 4.14 per 100,000 person-years and 4.85 per 100,000 person-years for CC and LC, respectfully.
Diagnosis is typically made without measuring the exact thickness of the subepithelial collagen band or by counting the number of lymphocytes in the epithelium. There is little research …

Bronchiectasis unrelated to cystic fibrosis (non-CF bronchiectasis) has become a major respiratory disease in developing nations. The dilated mucus filled airways promote bacterial overgrowth followed by chronic infection, bronchial inflammation, lung injury and re-infection Accurate pathogen identification and antimicrobial susceptibility allowing appropriate treatment, in turn, may break this vicious cycle. To study the spectrum and antimicrobial spectrum of pathogen yielded from respiratory specimens in adult patients with acute exacerbation of non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis. This cross-sectional study was performed at the pulmonology clinics of the Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan from 2016-2019. Respiratory specimens were collected from adult patients with …

Background: Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) is a distinct soft tissue neoplasm associated with NAB2-STAT6 gene fusion. It can involve a number of anatomic sites and exhibits a wide spectrum of histological features.
Main body: Apart from diversity in morphological features seen even in conventional SFT, two histologic variants (fat-forming and giant cell-rich) are also recognized. In addition, a malignant form and dedifferentiation are well recognized. Owing to diverse histological features and involvement of diverse anatomic locations, SFT can mimic other soft tissue neoplasms of different lineages including schwannoma, spindle cell lipoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, liposarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), malignant peripheral …

Artesunate is the most common treatment for malaria throughout the world. Artesunate has anticancer activity likely through the induction of reactive oxygen species, the same mechanism of action utilized in Plasmodium falciparum infections. Components of the kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway, which regulates cellular response to oxidative stress, are mutated in approximately 30% of non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLC); therefore, we tested the hypothesis that KEAP1 is required for artesunate sensitivity in NSCLC. Dose response assays identified A549 cells, which have a G333C-inactivating mutation in KEAP1, as resistant to artesunate, with an IC50 of …

Diagnostic Accuracy Of The Forns Score For Liver Cirrhosis In Patients With Chronic Viral Hepatitis, Tayyaba Bukhari, Lena Jafri, Hafsa Majid, Sibtain Ahmed, Aysha Habib Khan, Shahab Abid, Aniqa Raza, Imran Siddiqui
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Introduction: Liver cirrhosis is an irreversible and end-stage disease. It results from chronic liver damage characterized by the replacement of normal liver tissue by fibrosis, leading to the progressive loss of liver function. Making an early diagnosis of cirrhosis is important for patients with chronic hepatitis because early antiviral therapy can prevent the progression of cirrhosis and even induce regression. There have been efforts to develop surrogate markers for liver cirrhosis as the biopsy is invasive, costly, and difficult to standardize.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at the Section of Chemical Pathology, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory …

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive disease with a 5-y relative survival rate of 11% after distant metastasis. To survive the metastatic cascade, tumor cells remodel their signaling pathways by regulating energy production and upregulating survival pathways. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and Akt regulate energy homeostasis and survival, however, the individual or synergistic role of AMPK and Akt isoforms during lung colonization by TNBC cells is unknown. The purpose of this study was to establish whether targeting Akt, AMPKα or both Akt and AMPKα isoforms in circulating cancer cells can suppress TNBC lung colonization. Transient silencing of Akt1 …

Pvn Activity In Cardiac Sympathetic Afferent Reflex (Csar) Control And Cardiovascular Function, Shane H. Boomer
Honors Thesis
Regulation of blood pressure is essential in bodily health. Hypertension and hypotension can be associated with varying diseases that could potentiate further disease. From this, understanding the mechanisms that regulate blood pressure is important within medicine. In my study, I will be focusing on a cardiovascular reflex that is less well understood, the cardiac sympathetic afferent reflex (CSAR). In particular, this work will examine sex differences in this reflex in overall function and in the involvement of an area of the brain called the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). We will test the hypothesis that there will be a significant difference between …

Mosaic Pattern Of Progenitor Cell Marker Cd133 Expression To Identify Podocyte Proliferation Supports Collapsing Variant Of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (Fsgs), A Xiao, H Kanaan, W Li, P Zhang
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Introduction: Previous studies using immunofluorescent methods indicate that both the cellular crescents in crescentic glomerulonephritis and the podocyte proliferation in collapsing FSGS may both originate from parietal epithelial cells, which serve as CD133 positive progenitor cells. We have previously confirmed positive CD133 staining in the cellular crescents of crescentic glomerulonephritis. However, the role of CD133 expression in highlighting the proliferative podocytes in collapsing FSGS has not been adapted to the renal pathology practice. Methods: We have identified 19 collapsing FSGS from our archive over past 10 years (out of 3942 renal biopsies, 0.5 %). The collapsing FSGS cases were either …

Background
Cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands (CASG) is a rare, predominantly minor salivary gland tumor first described in 1999. Because the tumor shares morphologic and molecular features with polymorphous adenocarcinoma (PAC), in 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) included CASG within the spectrum of PAC. Almost 75% of CASG harbor molecular alterations in the PRKD (Protein kinase D) gene family, and some cases show ARID1A (AT-rich interaction domain 1A)-PRKD1 or DDX3X (DEAD-Box Helicase 3 X-Linked)-PRKD1 fusions.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Background: The gold standard screening method of hyperoxaluria in children is using 24-hour urine collection. Urine collection may be cumbersome and challenging for children. Reference intervals (RI) of oxalate for the Pakistani population are not readily available. Therefore we aimed to determine the oxalate to creatinine ratio (Ox: Cr) for Pakistani children <6 years of age.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Aga Khan University from June 2018 to October 2019. Random urine samples from apparently healthy children < 6 years were collected and stored at -30°C until analysis after adding 6M HCl. Oxalate was measured on Micro lab 300 using a kit based on oxalate oxidase principle, while creatinine was measured by kinetic Jaffe reaction. Data was analyzed by EP evaluator and SPSS 23. Ox: Cr ratio was calculated and reported with 90% confidence interval (CI) and interquartile range (IQR).
Results: The mean age of study subjects (n=120) was 29 ±22.3 months with an M: F ratio of 1:1. Children of various ethnicities …6>
