Evaluating The Relationship Between Participation In Student-Run Free Clinics And Changes In Empathy In Medical Students., Anita Modi, Michele Fascelli, Zachary Daitch, Mohammadreza Hojat Professor

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

PURPOSE: We explored differences in changes in medical student empathy in the third year of medical school between volunteers at JeffHOPE, a multisite medical student-run free clinic of Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC), and nonvolunteers.

METHOD: Volunteerism and leadership experience at JeffHOPE were documented for medical students in the Class of 2015 (n = 272) across their medical educations. Students completed the Jefferson Scale of Empathy at the beginning of medical school and at the end of the third year. Students who reported participation in other Jefferson-affiliated clinics (n = 44) were excluded from this study. Complete data were available …

Pain And Physical Function In A Socioeconomically Diverse Sample Of Black And White Adults, Angela Sardina 2017 University of South Florida

Pain And Physical Function In A Socioeconomically Diverse Sample Of Black And White Adults, Angela Sardina

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Musculoskeletal pain alters physiological function and these changes may be evidenced as early as middle age. Previous research has concluded that middle-aged adults are a high-risk group for chronic pain and report functional limitations similar to older adults. However, few studies have explored the unique individual factors (e.g., sociodemographic, health, and psychosocial characteristics) that may drive the pain experience; and more research is needed that examines the relationships between musculoskeletal pain and physical function, using objective performance measures, in a sample of racially and socioeconomically diverse adults.

Data from the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span …

Disseminated Nocardia Cyriacigeorgia Causing Pancreatitis In A Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant Recipient., Jason Chen, Md, Jonathan Pan, Md, Joanne Filicko-O'Hara, Margaret Kasner, Phyllis Flomenberg

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

We report the first published case of acute pancreatitis secondary to disseminated nocardiosis in a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipient on chronic immunosuppression for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Nocardiosis in the HSCT population is relatively rare, and has not yet been described in haploidentical HSCT recipients. Our patient is a 28-year-old male with a history of haploidentical HSCT and GVHD of the skin and lung who was admitted to the hospital with acute pancreatitis. The workup for the etiology of his pancreatitis was initially unrevealing. He subsequently developed worsening sepsis and respiratory failure despite broad spectrum antimicrobials. After multiple bronchoscopies …

Alzheimer's: Advancements Through Research, Taylor Wrozek 2017 Western Michigan University

Alzheimer's: Advancements Through Research, Taylor Wrozek

Honors Theses

This literary review examines some genes and proteins such as presenilin 1 presenilin 2, amyloid precursor protein, and apolipoprotein E, and Tau that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It also delves into four causal hypotheses for Alzheimer’s disease: the oxidative stress-induced AD cascade hypothesis, the copper-2 hypothesis, the amyloid cascade hypothesis, and the type II diabetes mellitus hypothesis. It further explains some of the current ways of diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease and its different forms; symptoms that have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease; and the different demographics of Alzheimer’s disease. Finally, different treatments, preventions, risks, and current research for Alzheimer’s disease …

Sex-Specific Associations Of Maternal Birthweight With Offspring Birthweight In The Omega Study., Collette N Ncube, Amelia R Gavin, Michelle A Williams, Chunfang Qiu, Tanya K Sorensen, Daniel A Enquobahrie 2017 Center for Perinatal Studies, Swedish Medical Center, Seattle, WA, USA

Sex-Specific Associations Of Maternal Birthweight With Offspring Birthweight In The Omega Study., Collette N Ncube, Amelia R Gavin, Michelle A Williams, Chunfang Qiu, Tanya K Sorensen, Daniel A Enquobahrie

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

PURPOSE: We investigated nonlinear and offspring sex-specific associations of maternal birthweight (BW) with offspring BW among participants of the Omega study, a pregnancy cohort.

METHODS: Maternal BW was modeled as a continuous variable, linear spline and binary variable indicating low birthweight (LBW;≥2500 grams). Offspring BW was modeled as a continuous and binary variable in regression models. Nonlinearity was assessed using likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) in marginal linear spline models.

RESULTS: For every 100-gram increase of maternal BW, offspring BW increased by 22.29 (95% CI: 17.57, 27.02) or 23.41 (95% CI: 6.87, 39.96) grams among mothers with normal BW or born …

Factors In Patient Responsiveness To Directional Preference-Matched Treatment Of Neck Pain With Or Without Upper Extremity Radiation, Benjamin Holmes, Ruta Brazauskas, Laura D. Cassidy, Rachel A. Wiegand 2017 Aurora Sheboygan Clinic Spine Institute; Medical College of Wisconsin

Factors In Patient Responsiveness To Directional Preference-Matched Treatment Of Neck Pain With Or Without Upper Extremity Radiation, Benjamin Holmes, Ruta Brazauskas, Laura D. Cassidy, Rachel A. Wiegand

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose

Patient-related predictive factors in responsiveness to directional preference therapy for neck pain with or without upper extremity radiation (NP/R) have not been reported. A directional preference is any neck movement that, when performed repeatedly to end range, results in centralization and/or alleviation of NP/R. It was hypothesized that patient compliance with a prescribed, directional preference-matched home exercise program would improve positive responsiveness to NP/R treatment.

Methods

Patient-related factors thought to affect responsiveness to care were collected retrospectively from charts and de-identified for patients with NP/R who underwent chiropractic treatment at a multispecialty spine clinic from January 2014 through June …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

As healthcare costs continue to rise, there has been great interest in understanding and defining the value of current therapeutic strategies for the treatment of cancer. Cancer immunotherapy has emerged as a clinically beneficial alternative to conventional therapies for a variety of malignancies. Characterized by broad clinical activity, durable response rates, distinct side effects, and unique response kinetics, immune-based agents are vastly different compared with traditional cytotoxic or targeted therapies. To date, however, value assessments in oncology have not focused on the unique aspects of cancer immunotherapy, which has resulted in a lack of understanding of the true value of …

Forensic And Clinical Diagnosis In "Shaken Baby Syndrome", Between Child Abuse And Iatrogenic Abuse, Roxana M. Duncea, Irina Apostol, Relu G. Calota, Vladimir Belis

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

“Shaken baby syndrome” in child abuse cases is a challenge for pediatrician and forensic experts, often a diagnosis of exclusion, with overwhelming moral and legal implications. Diagnosis is based on: subdural bleeding, rupture of retinal vessels, traumatic diffuse axonal injury with diffuse brain encephalopathy in the absence of external traumatic injuries and anamnesis data of an accidentally head injury.

Microscopic findings in diffuse axonal injuries were initially considered as a specific traumatic effect due to unrestricted movement and accelerated rotation of the head. Immunohistochemistry of beta amyloid protein precursor is gold standard method for identifying pathological diffuse axonal lesions, which …

Driving Simulators – More Than A Video Game!, William D. Mcquilken B.A., Judith M. Schultz B.A.

Department of Surgery

Background: This study aimed to investigate teenager, young adult, and adult knowledge levels on distracted and impaired driving through the use of educational driving simulators. The distracted and impaired driving simulators were customized to instruct participants on the dangers of driving distracted or impaired utilizing consequence videos. The simulators were taken to high schools, colleges/universities, and businesses over a four year period where we hypothesized that they would play a significant role in raising knowledge about the dangers and penalties of these risky driving behaviors and would also help to increase seat belt usage.

Setting: High schools, colleges / universities, …

Mobile Health Interventions For Adult Obesity In The United States: Analysis Of Effectiveness And Efficacy, David P. Paul III, Keerthi Gochipathala, Alberto Coustasse, Bezawit Wodajo, Niharika Bhardwaj 2017 Marshall University

Mobile Health Interventions For Adult Obesity In The United States: Analysis Of Effectiveness And Efficacy, David P. Paul Iii, Keerthi Gochipathala, Alberto Coustasse, Bezawit Wodajo, Niharika Bhardwaj

Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH

The Unites States continues to struggle with the negative health effects associated with increasing population obesity, a problem which has been historically difficult, if not impossible, to solve. Mobile health applications represent a potential partial solution to this problem. We examine the existing literature on the effects of mobile health applications on body weight, waist circumference, BMI, and lifestyle, examining both physical findings as well as adherence, satisfaction and cost effectiveness. The use of mobile for weight reduction looks promising, but evidence is mixed, which is not surprising given the rapidly evolving nature of the mobile application field.

Reducing Caregiver Burden: Fostering Healthy Aging And Social Support, Maria A. Rodriguez 2017 University of South Florida

Reducing Caregiver Burden: Fostering Healthy Aging And Social Support, Maria A. Rodriguez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over 43.5 million Americans provide informal care to a fast-growing elderly population in the United States. Informal care allows care-recipients to remain functional members of society. However, research suggests that the demands of informal care can negatively impact the health of caregivers. For example, caregiver burden increases the risk for poor health in caregivers compared to non-caregivers. Caregiving research is on the rise, but the dynamics of informal care in active retirement communities remains widely unexplored. To provide adequate services to lessen caregiver burden and improve the Quality of Life (QoL) of informal caregivers, the various settings in which informal …

Does medication safety and diversion education improve medication securement practices in SCU compared to current practice?

Abstract

Natasha R. Stankiewicz, MS, RN, NE-BC, CCRN-CMC

This safety quality improvement project began as newly hired SCU2 team members saw an opportunity to improve our medication safety practices and culture. The convenience of having certain medications directly available at bedside was priority. There was a lack of awareness and interest in securing medications within the department. However, the risk to our patients, families, visitors and colleagues when medications are left out, available and unsecured was apparent to new staff and others. Prior to …
