OBJECTIVE: Same-day discharge Total Ankle Arthroplasty (TAA) is becoming more common. This study sought to report the percentage of patients within a national database that had a same-day discharge following TAA, and to compare the complication rates for patients that had same-day discharge to those that had a short hospital stay. METHODS: From 2012-2021, the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) database was used to identify all patients undergoing TAA. OBJECTIVE: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a severe disease that primarily affects the middle-aged population, imposing a significant economic and social burden. Recent research has linked the progression of non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (NONFH) to the composition of the gut microbiota. Steroids and alcohol are considered major contributing factors. However, the relationship between NONFH caused by two etiologies and the microbiota remains unclear. In this study, we examined the gut microbiota and fecal metabolic phenotypes of two groups of patients, and analyzed potential differences in the pathogenic mechanisms from both the microbial and metabolic perspectives.

This study aimed to investigate (1) if there has been a rise in uncemented TKA and (2) if there are differences in early complications between cemented and uncemented TKA. PURPOSE: This study sought to use an all-payor inpatient claims database to investigate the incidence and national cumulative costs of revision shoulder arthroplasty in the United States, including those being performed for PJI. In addition, we also aimed to project the incidence and national economic impact of revision shoulder arthroplasty in the US through 2030. METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) was used to estimate the annual number of revision shoulder arthroplasties performed between 2008 and 2019 using ICD procedure codes. Purpose: To compare tensile fatigue and strength measures of biocomposite and all-suture anchors in an ovine humerus-infraspinatus tendon model of rotator cuff repair. Methods: Infraspinatus tendons on adult ovine humeri were sharply transected at the insertion. One of each pair was assigned randomly for fixation with 2 biocomposite or all-suture anchors. Constructs were tested with 200 cycles of 20 to 70 N tensile load, and gap formation was measured at the incised tendon end every 50 cycles. They were subsequently tested to failure. Dental implantation is an increasingly common procedure used to treat missing teeth. However, surgical drilling to place the implant poses a high risk of injury to critical anatomy, such as inferior alveolar nerve injury or maxillary sinus perforation. A real-time surgical feedback system sensing proximity of these critical anatomy could reduce injury risks. This dissertation investigates the development of such a system that incorporates an electrical impedance sensor into the tip of a surgical drill.

Proteoglycans through their sulfated glycosaminoglycans regulate cell-matrix signaling during tissue development, regeneration, and degeneration processes. Large extracellular proteoglycans such as aggrecan, versican, and perlecan are especially important for the structural integrity of the intervertebral disc and cartilage during development. In these tissues, proteoglycans are responsible for hydration, joint flexibility, and the absorption of mechanical loads. Loss or reduction of these molecules can lead to disc degeneration and skeletal dysplasia, evident from loss of disc height or defects in skeletal development respectively. Purpose: Acrobatics and Tumbling (A&T) is an emerging NCAA sport. Due to the novelty of the sport, limited research on injury incidence and correlates exists. Anecdotal evidence suggests that A&T presents with high injury rates. A relationship between vitamin D and bony injuries exists among athletes, but little is known about soft tissue injuries. Understanding the causes and incidence of injuries, including vitamin D, may assist athletic trainers. Spinal metastases can result in severe neurologic compromise and decreased overall survival. Despite treatment advances, local disease progression is frequent, highlighting the need for novel therapies. Tumor treating fields (TTFields) impair tumor cell replication and are influenced by properties of surrounding tissue. We hypothesized that bone's dielectric properties will enhance TTFields-mediated suppression of tumor growth in spinal metastasis models. Computational modeling of TTFields intensity was performed following surgical resection of a spinal metastasis and demonstrated enhanced TTFields intensity within the resected vertebral body. Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) can present challenges in diagnosis and treatment, particularly in the setting of atypical causative organisms such as fungi and mycobacteria. Herein, we present a case and provide a review of the diagnosis and treatment of an unusual PJI caused by bacillus Calmette-Guérin, administered during the treatment of bladder cancer 3 years prior to total knee arthroplasty and subsequent PJI. Although the patient's history of bladder cancer was known, neither his Bacillus Calmette-Guérin treatment nor its potential for distant site spread that could lead to PJI were appreciated, leading to a prolonged diagnostic evaluation and treatment course.
