Benefits Of Yoga For Physical Health And Quality Of Life For Older Adults - Report Series # 18, Alexa Roggeveen, Pat Spadafora, Susan Anderson-Wilcox, Ashley Hiscock

Publications and Scholarship

What are the benefits of yoga for community-dwelling older adults? In this pilot study, we included six older women in a once-weekly Iyengar yoga class for 12 weeks. Our findings indicate that yoga has beneficial effects for physical fitness and psychological health. Further, reports from interviews and journals indicate that this type of fitness program changes perceptions of ways to engage in physical exercise, and would be likely to encourage adherence among participants.

There is need for multiple initiatives focusing on the pipeline from professional undergraduate education through the continuing education of current practitioners, in order to make some dent in the looming shortfall of geriatric health care providers. It is particularly gratifying to announce that Virginia has been awarded federal funding of a Geriatric Education Center (VGEC). The overall goal of the VGEC is to improve the training of health professionals in geriatrics.

The Area Planning and Services Committee (APSC) conference will recognize the values, opportunities, and challenges associated with growing older with lifelong disabilities. These two conferences symbolize how we as a people can celebrate the good and confront the …

Aging As An Option, Edward F. Ansello 2010 Virginia Commonwealth University

Aging As An Option, Edward F. Ansello

Director's Editorials from Age in Action

Sometimes people treat aging as if it were an option or a discretionary exercise. Aging is neither a fad nor an option but a bedrock reality that should be constantly under consideration, especially by those charged with protecting the common good. We need to remember that we should not treat aging and aging-related research, training, and services as an option.

Older adults in southwest Minnesota have limited options regarding mental health services. Sanford Tracy Medical Center and Sanford Westbrook Medical Center sought to identify the needs of this population so they can better serve their patients. The following research questions were asked: Do local service providers feel gaps in services exist for older adults experiencing mental health needs in the rural southwestern Minnesota communities of Tracy and Westbrook and the surrounding areas? Our Grandparents, Our Parents, Our Future Selves: Optimizing Function In Old Age., Thomas Michael Gill

Center for Policy Research

Most of my research at Yale University School of Medicine over the past several years has focused on identifying older adults at risk of functional decline and disability, identifying events that may precipitate the transition from functional independence to disability, and developing strategies to postpone or reduce frailty and disability. As a result of the Precipitating Events Project (PEP) and other research conducted by the Yale Center on Aging/Pepper Center, we now realize that age is only a proxy for other factors that lead to disability, and that some of these factors can be modified to reduce the risk of …
