Temporal Trends And Geographic Variations In Mortality Rates From Prescription Opioids: Lessons From Florida And West Virginia, Sarah A Palumbo, Charles H Hennekens, Janet D Robishaw, Robert S Levine

OBJECTIVES: To explore temporal trends and geographic variations in mortality from prescription opioids from 1999 to 2016.

METHODS: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research Multiple Cause of Death files were used to calculate age-adjusted rates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and create spatial cluster maps.

RESULTS: From 1999 to 2016, counties in West Virginia experienced the highest overall mortality rates in the United States from prescription opioids. Specifically, from 1999 to 2004, the highest rate in West Virginia of 24.87/100,000 (95% CI 17.84-33.73) was the fourth highest in the United States. From 2005 to …

The aim of this study was to determine whether racial differences in HbA1c persist in older adults (≥65 years) living with type 2 diabetes. Data from The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2014 were used to examine the association between HbA1c and older adults (≥65 years) over time. Compared to non-Hispanic Whites, Mexican Americans had the greatest difference in average HbA1c among minority groups, followed by those with unspecified/mixed ethnicities and non-Hispanic Blacks. In the adjusted linear model, racial minorities had a statistically significant relationship with HbA1c. There was no relationship between HbA1c and older age and insulin …

The purpose of the study was to test the impact of care coordinator visits by primary care registered nurses on serum hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. In the study, the researcher compared 2 groups of type 2 diabetes patients—those who had care coordinator visits from registered nurses and those who did not—through retrospective data collection and analysis from the patients’ electronic medical record from July 2018 through December 2018. Somatic symptoms in adolescents are associated with psychosocial stress. Parental military deployment can function as a stressor for adolescents. A retrospective cohort study was developed exploring relationships between health care utilization, a proxy for symptomatology, and sponsor deployment in adolescents with somatic symptoms. Data was obtained from the Military Health System Data Repository. Migraine headaches was the most common somatic symptom diagnosis. Parental deployment was overall associated with a 27% decrease in visits for somatic symptoms. For adolescents whose sponsor was female, deployment was associated with a 34% decrease in visits. Over the last ten years, while teenage use of cigarettes has diminished, their use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (e-cigarettes) has increased. Adolescent e-cigarette use includes risks and challenges which are unique and different from adolescent use of traditional cigarettes. Many of the risks of e-cigarettes are not well known or well understood, especially by the teen population. A robust understanding of what entices adolescents and teens to use e-cigarettes is critical for schools in crafting an effective response. Purpose: Patients send clues, often unwittingly, when they are grappling with a life challenge that complicates their care. For instance, a patient may lose control of a previously well-managed chronic condition or start missing appointments. When explored, these clues help clinicians uncover the life circumstance impacting the individual’s ability to manage their health and health care. Such clues are termed “contextual red flags.” Effective care requires recognizing them, asking about them, and customizing the care plan where feasible. Introduction: Depression is a common health concern in primary care with barriers to treatment well documented in the literature. Innovative online psychoeducational approaches to address barriers to care have been well received and can be cost effective. This pilot trial evaluated the effectiveness of an online psychoeducation curriculum intended to alleviate symptoms of depression while utilizing minimal staff resources. Methods: A small (n=29) randomized control pilot study was conducted. Online psychoeducational content was delivered in 5 to 10-minute videos over 8weeks. Moraxella osleonsis (M.osleonsis ) is an organism that rarely presents with bacteremia in immunocompetent patients. We report a case of an immunocompetent 59-year-old male with a recent SARS-CoV-2 infection that developed M. osleonsis bacteremia. We believe that SARS-CoV-2 infection may have played a role in developing M. osleonsis bacteremia in this patient and may be one of the first reported cases of such bacteremia in a COVID-19 patient.

We report a case of a 73-year-old male with a history of diabetes mellitus, osteomyelitis, methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteremia who recently completed an extended intravenous course of cefazolin eight days back, and presented with MSSA bacteremia complicated by epidural abscess, endocarditis, and aortic root abscess. Meanwhile, the patient was tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Even with aggressive antibiotic treatment, the patient remained bacteremic and developed endocarditis with a worsening aortic root abscess. Introduction: The Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted on March 23, 2010 significantly impacted access to healthcare for people living with HIV (PLWH). Expansion of care was accomplished in three areas: eliminating exclusions for pre-existing conditions, elimination of lifetime caps on healthcare expenditures, and expansion of Medicaid eligibility.

Purpose: To describe obstetric training in Southeast family medicine residencies in 2019. To determine factors that contribute to continuity deliveries, vaginal deliveries and residents who continue OB after graduation.

Methods: A survey of family medicine program directors was conducted in 2019. We took the answers from the 32 South Atlantic program directors that completed the survey questions of interest. We used chi-square tests and Kruskal-Wallis rank test to compare variables. STATA 14 was used for analysis.
