Rationale:

Cardiac arrest (CA) caused by trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) after endoscopic nasal surgery is rare. Hence, when a patient suffers from TCR induced CA in the recovery room, most doctors may not be able to find the cause in a short time, and standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation and resuscitation measures may not be effective. Providing circulatory assistance through venous-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) can help healthcare providers gain time to identify the etiology and initiate symptom-specific treatment.

Patient concerns:

We report a rare case of CA after endoscopic nasal surgery treated with VA-ECMO.

IMPORTANCE: Differences in neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics are important considerations in understanding differences in risk vs resilience in mental health. Neighborhood disadvantage is associated with alterations in the function and structure of threat neurocircuitry.

Background: Older patients with delirium are at increased risk for prolonged hospitalization, poor outcomes, higher costs and a greater risk for institutionalization. By identifying those at risk early, interventions can be implemented to prevent or minimize the severity of the delirium. Study objective

Study the clinical outcomes associated with the number of concomitant vasopressors used in critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Design

A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients admitted with COVID-19 to the intensive care unit (ICU) between March and October 2020.

Setting

Rush University Medical Center, United States.

Participants

Adult patients at least 18 years old with COVID-19 with continuous infusion of any vasopressors were included.

Main outcome measures

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus is an underreported cause of miscarriage and neurologic disease. Surveillance remains challenging because of nonspecific symptomatology, inconsistent case reporting, and difficulties with diagnostic testing. We describe a case of acute lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus disease in a person living with HIV in Connecticut, USA, identified by using quantitative reverse transcription PCR.

Quality improvement (QI) is a major focus of all departments and fields of health care, including emergency medical services. The chaotic and rapidly evolving atmosphere in which paramedics must practice can lead to inconsistency between what is documented and the actual events. BACKGROUND: Serological surveys are used to ascertain influenza infection and immunity, but evidence for the utility of mucosal immunoglobulin A (IgA) as a correlate of infection or protection is limited.

METHODS: We performed influenza-like illness (ILI) surveillance on 220 individuals living or working in a retirement community in Gainesville, Florida from January to May 2018, and took pre- and postseason nasal samples of 11 individuals with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed influenza infection and 60 randomly selected controls. Mucosal IgA against 10 strains of influenza was measured from nasal samples.

Wellens syndrome usually indicates critical left anterior descending artery (LAD) occlusion. Pseudo-Wellens syndrome consists of criteria of Wellens syndrome in the absence of critical LAD occlusion. We report a case of Pseudo-Wellens syndrome related to cocaine use. A 52-year-old male with a medical history of hypertension and diabetes, presented with acute retrosternal chest pain of 3 days duration. Physical examination was unremarkable. To further the understanding of post-COVID conditions, and provide a more nuanced description of symptom progression, resolution, emergence, and reemergence after SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-like illness, analysts examined data from the Innovative Support for Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Infections Registry (INSPIRE), a prospective multicenter cohort study. This report includes analysis of data on self-reported symptoms collected from 1,296 adults with COVID-like illness who were tested for SARS-CoV-2 using a Food and Drug Administration-approved polymerase chain reaction or antigen test at the time of enrollment and reported symptoms at 3-month intervals for 12 months.
