BACKGROUND: Patients with hematologic malignancies (HM) often develop transfusion dependence. The patient and caregiver burdens associated with the need for frequent transfusions are high. Home blood transfusions has the potential to reduce these burdens, but is not widely practiced in the United States. We designed a qualitative study to evaluate the patient and caregiver perceptions of the potential for a home blood transfusion program.

Abstract: Hemorrhage is a leading cause of death in trauma patients. Whole blood administration in trauma has gained a renewed interest in recent years, however the concept is not new at all, with its origins spanning over 100 years. Field experience in United States’ military conflicts has provided important data on the efficacy of whole blood in reducing mortality and amount of blood product administration. Background: Fecal occult blood tests (FOBT) are inappropriately used in patients with melena, hematochezia, coffee ground emesis, iron deficiency anemia, and diarrhea. The use of FOBT for reasons other than screening for colorectal cancer is considered low-value and unnecessary. Methods: Quality Improvement Project that utilized education, Best Practice Advisory (BPA) and modification of order sets in the electronic health record (EHR). The interventions were done in a sequential order based on the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) method. An annotated run chart was used to analyze the collected data. Low-lying coastal cities, exemplified by Norfolk, Virginia, face the challenge of street flooding caused by rainfall and tides, which strain transportation and sewer systems and can lead to personal and property damage. While high-fidelity, physics-based simulations provide accurate predictions of urban pluvial flooding, their computational complexity renders them unsuitable for real-time applications. Using data from Norfolk rainfall events between 2016 and 2018, this study compares the performance of a previous surrogate model based on a random forest algorithm with two deep learning models: Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). Pyomyositis is a rare disease that is often misdiagnosed. Formerly more common in tropic areas, it has been more prevalent in temperate climates in the past couple of decades. Most cases of pyomyositis have a known cause or the patient is immunocompromised, but there are a few documented cases of spontaneous pyomyositis in an otherwise healthy patient. Our case describes a 35-year-old male with no past medical history or history of IV drug use who presented to the emergency department with right sided chest pain.
