Isolated unilateral medial rectus palsy is a rare but significant clinical manifestation of acute pontine infarction, often presenting without the typical neurological deficits seen in brainstem strokes. This case report highlights a 61-year-old male with a history of hypertension and diabetes who presented with four days of double vision, with no other significant neurological symptoms such as headache, speech disturbances, or focal weakness. On examination, the patient exhibited an isolated inability to adduct his left eye, without any visual deficits or abnormalities in other cranial nerve functions. Neuroimaging, specifically MRI, confirmed the diagnosis of an acute left pontine infarction. The …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related growth hormone deficiency is often undertreated, despite documented physical, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric effects. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), with neuroreceptors located in brain regions responsible for learning, memory, and mood, regulates cerebral blood flow, neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity. The aim of this study was to determine associations between IGF-1 levels and post-TBI symptom severity, anxiety, and depression. This retrospective observational study at an Academic Brain Injury Center included participants evaluated 3-12 months post-TBI with available IGF-1 values and complete Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ-13), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) responses. This study investigated the lived experiences of individuals living with HIV (PLWH) in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area of Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic, using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework. The research examined the intersection of health, social dynamics, and psychological resilience among PLWH, who faced compounded vulnerabilities due to systemic inequities and the dual public health crises of HIV and COVID-19. Through semi-structured interviews with ten participants from diverse backgrounds, the study captured the profound impacts of disrupted healthcare systems, heightened stigma, and social isolation on this marginalized population. As gender-affirming surgery becomes more widespread, it is important that healthcare providers recognize complications related to gender-affirming surgery. Although rates of postoperative bleeding after gender-affirming vaginoplasty are relatively low, it is imperative that this potentially life-threatening complication is recognized and managed quickly. This case highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the management of neovaginal bleeding that was unable to be controlled intraoperatively by suture ligation.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in youth sports, illuminating the essential demand for adequate emergency response, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) usage, and comprehensive emergency action plans (EAPs). Research shows that despite the importance of prompt intervention, the majority of youth club sports programs outside of the school setting lack the training and resources needed to respond effectively to SCA incidents. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of an educational seminar that includes CPR/AED training and EAP simulation exercises in improving participants’ knowledge, skills, and confidence in managing cardiac emergencies. [Introduction] A 32-year-old woman with no significant past medical history presented to the emergency department with 11 days of fever, fatigue, chills, and new-onset fullness in her left flank. She denied dysuria, abdominal pain, or vaginal bleeding. Vital signs showed fever and mild hypotension, and the physical examination revealed left-sided abdominal distension. Laboratory results demonstrated leukocytosis and a lactate of 3.2 mmol/L. She appeared nontoxic but was persistently febrile despite initial fluids and antibiotics. Computed tomography—shown in Figure 1, and ultrasound—shown in Figure 2, were obtained and revealed the diagnosis.

The connection between music and CPR has gained attention in recent media, yet there is limited research examining its effects on CPR performance, particularly with regard to anxiety levels. This study aims to evaluate the impact of personalized music selection on CPR performance and anxiety levels among first-time trainees. Specifically, the study will assess whether personalizing CPR training with music that aligns with the optimal chest compression rate enhances overall compression quality while simultaneously reducing anxiety in the rescuer. Efforts to improve treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI) often use animals to develop effective therapeutics, intending to improve the survival and the quality of life of persons with SCI. Over half of all SCIs in the United States occur at the cervical level and often cause locomotor deficits and life-threatening breathing dysfunction. Thus, my dissertation is focused on this important patient population.
