Kyphoplasty is an intervention to treat and stabilize painful vertebral compression fractures by injecting Polymethymethacrylate (PMMA) cement in the vertebral cavity. It has become increasingly important procedure in pathologic compression fracture treatment. Pulmonary cement embolism (PCE) happens by leakage of cement through the venous plexus or retrograde migration in the arterial vessels to aorta. It was reported as a rare complication of this procedure (3.5%) but others have suggested that because of paucity in symptoms, PCE is often overlooked and can happen in up to 28.6% of kyphoplasty patients. INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are associated with prolonged hospital length of stay and mortality rates up to 20%. Risk factors for MRSA and presumed type of infection often guide vancomycin prescribing. This study evaluated the presence of MRSA risk factors in emergent and critically ill patients who received vancomycin therapy. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated emergent and critically ill patients who received vancomycin for at least 24 hours for a presumed infection from 1/2020—3/2020. Identification of subphenotypes based on host immune responses that are biologically discrete and predict outcomes may enable personalized COVID-19 therapies. M. tuberculosis and M. bovis are clinically and radiographically indistinguishable, hence, genotype-based identification is required. Management and outcomes of M. bovis infection are not well described. We present the first case of endobronchial tuberculosis secondary to M. bovis in an immunocompetent host. During hypoxia or inflammation, extracellular adenosine levels are elevated. Studies using pharmacologic approaches or genetic animal models pertinent to extracellular adenosine signaling implicate this pathway in attenuating hypoxia-associated inflammation. There are four distinct adenosine receptors. Of these, it is not surprising that the Adora2b adenosine receptor functions as an endogenous feedback loop to control hypoxia-associated inflammation. First, Adora2b activation requires higher adenosine concentrations compared to other adenosine receptors, similar to those achieved during hypoxic inflammation. Second, Adora2b is transcriptionally induced during hypoxia or inflammation by hypoxia-inducible transcription factor HIF1A. The transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor HIF1A induces cardioprotection from ischemia and reperfusion injury. Here, we investigate tissue-specific pathways that are critical for HIF1A-elicited tissue protection. Initial studies showed that mice with induced global Hif1a deletion (Hif1aloxP/loxP UbiquitinCre+) have exaggerated myocardial injury during in situ ischemia and reperfusion. Surprisingly, this phenotype was mirrored only in mice with myeloid-specific Hif1a deletion (Hif1aloxP/loxP LysM Cre+). In contrast, mice with myocardial specific (Hif1aloxP/loxP Myosin Cre+), or vascular Hif1a deletion (Hif1aloxP/loxP VEcadherin Cre+) experienced similar levels of injury as controls. BACKGROUND: Type 2 myocardial infarction (MI) is increasingly diagnosed in patients with heart failure (HF). A paucity of data exists pertinent to the contemporary prevalence and impact of type 2 MI in patients with HF. We studied the patient profiles and the prognostic impact of type 2 MI on outcomes of HF hospitalizations.

This project sought to develop a tangible object that provided clear leader identification and assisted in code team management and simulated team training. A Code Team Leader Card (CTLC) was designed to provide clear leader identification while simultaneously providing a cognitive aid via integration of pediatric advanced life support (PALS) algorithms.
