The 1927 SIR contagion model is the dynamical system for an infection that passes at a constant rate in random pairwise meetings. Our Behavioral SI* Model assumes that everyone has access to a constant elasticity of avoidance technology. We then derive the passing rate in fully solvable Nash equilibrium of the game where everyone optimizes. The resulting dynamics are log-linear, and incidence is log-linear in prevalence, with slope less than one.
The SI* models yields extreme predictions for major contagions, not realized. At breakout, the SI* models capture exponential growth. In our BSI* model, increasing avoidance behavior bends the curve, …

Library Articles and Research
Starting March 11, 2020, the day that Chapman University announced that classes would transition immediately to remote in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Leatherby Libraries dramatically shifted its marketing strategy and the use of social media to communicate with the student body, faculty, staff, and other community member followers. The Leatherby Libraries used social media during the COVID-19 crisis as both a means of communicating urgent messages to its patrons and also as a tool for engaging community members in the absence of traditional
library tours, events, and exhibits.
Understanding How Democracy Shapes Well-Being Of Countries In Europe And Asia, Wing Laam Ng
Understanding How Democracy Shapes Well-Being Of Countries In Europe And Asia, Wing Laam Ng
SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works
There is no lack of literature talking about the relationship between well-being and democracy. However, little research has been done by separating the area. This study is going to explore the association between democracy and well-being again by separating the countries in Europe and Asia. Well-being is measured by life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect and satisfaction towards the government while democracy refers to the Democracy Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit. In total, thirty one European countries and seventeen Asian countries are selected based on the availability of data and exclusion of Asia-Europe border countries. Pearson correlation coefficient and …

Pandora’S Box To Sex Offenders Or Gift To The Public? Reviewing Sex Conviction Record Check In Hong Kong, England And Wales, Tsz Yan Elizabeth Yau
SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works
Qualitative research and literature review were conducted by interviewing two ex-sex offenders and a police officer in England for reviewing Sexual conviction record check(system) in Hong Kong, England and Wales. The major findings in the research showed the system might bring stress and labelling effect toward the ex-offenders. Many sex offenders might lack information about the system before discharge which might hinder their rehabilitation and reintegration to the society. Moreover, the protection of the system in Hong Kong could not cover some potential situations which might do harm to the victims. Five policy suggestions are made at the end of …

Comparison Of Ageing Policy Between Hong Kong And Singapore, Ka Wai Tam
SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works
This research study aims to explore and compare the ageing policy between Hong Kong and Singapore. Population ageing itself is a dynamic process. The ageing of the population is caused by three reasons: the decline in the level of fertility, the decline in the death rate and the continuous extension of the average life expectancy of the population. It is an inevitable demographic phenomenon. However, under the globalization effect, although the world is getting more connected in the last few decades, all developed and developing countries are facing the same problem which is the ageing population. There are a lot …

Objective: To assess an alternative method for estimating demand for postpartum tubal ligation and evaluate reproductive trajectories of low-income women who did not obtain a desired procedure. Study design: In a 2-year cohort study of 1700 publicly insured women who delivered at 8 hospitals in Texas, we identified those who had an unmet demand for tubal ligation prior to discharge from the hospital. We classified unmet demand as explicit or prompted based on survey questions that included a prompt regarding whether the respondent would like to have had a tubal ligation at the time of delivery. We assessed persistence of …
Cognitive Effects Of Alcohol Use And Sleep Disruption In College Students, Taylor English
Cognitive Effects Of Alcohol Use And Sleep Disruption In College Students, Taylor English
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Alcohol use and sleep disruption are highly prevalent amongst college students, yet their combined effects on cognitive functioning and subsequent classroom performance have not been fully examined. Alcohol use has been shown to negatively impact cognitive functioning, especially in college students without fully matured brain regions. This has led to decreases in academic functioning and increases in college dropout. Disruptions in sleep functioning can lead to both lapses in attention and an overall decrease in attention, which can negatively impact learning in a classroom environment.
Participants were 96 undergraduate students who were invited to participate based on responses from a …

Objective: This study explored the additive value of the multi-item EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L) as an outcome measure in health inequality analyses, relative to the single-item EuroQol visual analog scale (EQ VAS).
Methods: A sample comprising the general population from Italy, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom (UK) completed the EQ-5D-5L and the EQ VAS. The level of education was selected as a proxy for socio-economic status (SES). EQ-5D-5L level sum scores (LSS) were compared against EQ VAS scores. Stratified and multivariable analyses were used to study the associations between SES and the LSS/EQ VAS relative to the presence of chronic …

Measuring The Effects Of Social Isolation And Dissatisfaction On Depressive Symptoms During The Covid-19 Pandemic: The Moderating Role Of Sleep And Physical Activity, Ivan Vargas, Erin Kaye Howie, Alexandria Muench, Michael L. Perlis
Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Social distancing was universally implemented to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Long-term social distancing can lead to increased feelings of social isolation or dissatisfaction with one's daily interpersonal interactions, which can subsequently result in reduced psychological health (e.g., greater depression). The present study quantified this association, and the extent to which it was moderated by measures of sleep and physical activity, by surveying 3658 adults (mean age = 46.0 years) from across the United States. Participants answered questions related to their social experiences, sleep, physical activity, and depressive symptoms during the early stages of the pandemic (March-June 2020). …

Resilience And Urban Regeneration Policies. Lessons From Community-Led Initiatives. The Case Study Of Canfugarolas In Mataro (Barcelona), Diego Saez Ujaque, Elisabet Roca, Rafael De Balanzó Joue, Pere Fuertes, Pilar Garcia-Almirall
Publications and Research
This paper addresses socio-ecological, community-led resilience as the ability of the urban system to progress and adapt. This is based on the socio-cultural, self-organized case study of CanFugarolas in Mataró (Barcelona), for the recovery of a derelict industrial building and given the lack of attention to resilience emerging from grassroots. Facing rigidities (stagnation) observed under the provisions of urban regeneration policies (regulatory realm), evidenced in the proliferation of urban voids (infrastructural arena), the social subsystem stands as the enabler of urban progression. Under the heuristics of the Adaptive Cycle and Panarchy, the study embraces Fath’s model to analyze the transition …
Global Mobility: Why People Migrate, Parag Khanna
Global Mobility: Why People Migrate, Parag Khanna
Asian Management Insights
The global mobility of people and how it has shaped the characteristics and culture of people living in different parts in the world will continue to defi ne our human story. It will also determine how we deal with top-of-mind management issues, such as the competition for talent and people development. Today, we are faced with a convergence of disruptive factors that will further spur global mobility. Demographic imbalance is one key factor. We do not have a healthy distribution of the old and young across countries; there are either too many or too few of one or the other.

Navigating The Pandemic As It Enters Its Second Year, Havovi Joshi
Asian Management Insights
Many countries, enabled by the rapid vaccine rollout, experienced some moments of relief from the Covid-19 pandemic as they embarked on their long and winding transition toward normalcy. However, despite the Herculean effort expended, achieving herd immunity remains a distant goal for many due to the emergence of the highly transmissible and lethal Delta variant and the persistence of vaccine hesitancy. As such, the coronavirus continues to upend lives, businesses, and society, and the playbook for survival will still be a work-in-progress

There has been a growing interest in applying data envelopment analysis (DEA) as a non-parametric approach in portfolio optimization due to its flexibility in overcoming the limitations of the conventional mean-variance portfolio (MVP) model. Therefore, this study highlights the use of DEA as a portfolio selection tool that may encourage individuals to invest in the Philippine stock market for its ability to integrate any technical and fundamental factors. This study shows that the DEA model outperforms the MVP model in terms of risk-adjusted returns. However, the investor may need to change the model used to generate the highest returns because …

Non-Tariff Measures And Their Impacts On Asean Economic Integration, Myrna S. Austria
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Using a gravity model that accounts for the asymmetric effects of non-tariff measures (NTMs), the study examined the impact of the five most prevalent NTMs in the region on intra-ASEAN imports. The study found that all five NTMs are significant factors affecting intra-ASEAN imports. However, their effects vary at the sectoral level, by pairs of trading partners, and whether the products are covered by mutual recognition and harmonization agreements (MRA) or not. For example, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, in general, negatively affect imports and are trade-reducing. Exceptions are prepared foodstuff and medicinal products, both of which are covered by …

There has been a growing interest in the application of data envelopment analysis (DEA) as a nonparametric approach in portfolio optimization due to its flexibility in overcoming the limitations of the conventional mean-variance portfolio (MVP) model. Therefore, this study aims to validate the allocative efficiency of the DEA cross-efficiency model using blue chip stocks in the Philippine Stock Exchange from 2010 to 2019. This study finds that the proposed model is able to distinguish a unique set of best-performing stocks across each holding period and outperforms the MVP more consistently. The results of this study suggest that the proposed DEA …

A Multidimensional Framework For Understanding Refugee Poverty In The United States, Mitra Naseh, Miriam Potocky, Shanna L. Burke, Paul H. Stuart
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: The abrupt and unplanned nature of forced displacement usually leaves refugees with limited financial and social assets (Betts et al., 2017; Naseh et al., 2018). Moreover, forced displacement often interrupts refugees’ access to education and opportunities to invest in their human capital (Dryden-Peterson, 2011). These challenges together with other factors such as lack of familiarity with a new language, stigma and discrimination, and unfamiliarity with the job market can result in poverty among newly resettled refugees (Ekren, 2018; Lukasiewicz, 2017). This study aimed to build a multidimensional poverty framework for adult refugees with a specific focus on their …

The authors developed a novel tool, the CREDIT URE, to define and measure roles performed by undergraduate students working in research placements. Derived from an open-source taxonomy for determining authorship credit, the CREDIT URE defines 14 possible roles, allowing students and their research mentors to rate the degree to which students participate in each role. The tool was administered longitudinally across three cohorts of undergraduate student-mentor pairs involved in a biomedical research training program for students from diverse backgrounds. Students engaged most frequently in roles involving data curation, investigation, and writing. Less frequently, students engaged in roles related to software …

The increasingly prominent role of the Internet in the lives of Americans has resulted in more people coming into contact with various types of online content, including online hate material. One of the most common forms of online hate targets immigrants, seeking to position immigrants as threats to personal, national, economic, and cultural security. Given the recent rise in online hate targeting immigrants, this study examines factors that bring individuals into virtual contact with such material. Utilizing recently collected online survey data of American youth and young adults, we draw on insights from Routine Activity Theory and Social Structure-Social Learning …

Reinforcer Preferences Of Liberty University Professors, Sarah Stoker
Senior Honors Theses
Prior research in Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) has found positive reinforcement effective for increasing work performance when rewards are reinforcing to the individual. Research also supports the efficacy of stimulus preference assessments (SPAs) in identifying reinforcers. The purpose of this study was to identify reinforcers for faculty at Liberty University. The hypotheses were, in a sample of faculty in Liberty University’s School of Behavioral Sciences (1) potential reinforcers other than monetary reinforcers will be identified as high-preference items and (2) tangible items will be identified as low-preference items. Hypotheses were tested using an online survey with Likert scales and written …

Fidelity Monitoring In The Solution Focused Wellness For Hiv (Sfwh) Intervention For Women, Helen Taylor Yates, Spencer Elise Lee
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
Solution Focused methods are often interpreted by different practitioners with a degree of flexibility and adaptation to specific practice settings (Lehmann & Patton, 2012). This flexibility is one of the features that makes SFBT a very client-centered approach and has been highlighted as one of the key aspects of successful co-construction of desired outcomes with clients (Franklin et al., 2017). This collaborative approach is possible due to SFBT’s utilization of social constructionist principals in the solution-building process (Blundo & Simon, 2015). While encouraging flexibility of implementation of SFBT, identifying the main tenets of the therapy, including specific techniques and mindsets …
