Evaluating The Responsiveness Of Urban Security In The University Area, Varshini Renikunta Nov 2023

Evaluating The Responsiveness Of Urban Security In The University Area, Varshini Renikunta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Perceptions of safety within one's neighborhood can significantly impact overall health. While certain neighborhood features like broken sidewalks, crime rates, and visible disorder can influence these perceptions, the exact interplay of these factors remains unclear, especially among individuals with disabilities who might perceive themselves at greater risk. Individuals typically opt for routes and spaces they deem safe in the built environment, such as well-lit pathways, areas next to lively storefronts instead of closed facades, or routes that steer clear of potentially unsafe building entrances. How individuals navigate and interact with their surroundings is intrinsically tied to their cognitive perceptions shaped …

Circular Food Education: Developing A Food Education Programme Based On Sustainability, Experiential Learning And Pleasure In Irish Primary Schools, Michelle Darmody Dr

Doctoral

A constructivist ontology underpinned the project, with multiple theoretical frameworks related to constructivist learning and building agency, informing the study. A multi-method action research methodology was used, providing practical solutions through action, reflection, practice and theory. A narrative review of the literature and existing policy preceded three sections of fieldwork. A scoping consultation with key stakeholders was followed by the development and piloting of a food education programme entitled the Global Citizenship Food and Biodiversity Theme …

Prosecutors Or Helpers: An Institutional Ethnography Of Child Protective Services Casework, Anna Maria Rockhill Nov 2023

Prosecutors Or Helpers: An Institutional Ethnography Of Child Protective Services Casework, Anna Maria Rockhill

Dissertations and Theses

The mission of child welfare is to strengthen the ability of families to care for their children and to protect children and provide aid, services, or referrals to families where maltreatment is said to have occurred. The vast majority of the families who become involved with child welfare are multiply disadvantaged and child welfare is a key feature of the array of public supports for struggling families. However, the institution fails many of the families it serves. Despite recent efforts by those in the field to promote collaboration and engagement, many parents experience child welfare as neither empowering nor helpful …

Reversing The Downward Curve: When Is Progressive Discipline Necessary And How To Focus On Positive Improvement And Retention Within An Access Services Department?, Kay Coates, Jessica Garner

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

A challenge that many leaders face in Access Services is managing employee relations. A team with high morale will be well-functioning, collegial, and more likely to represent the library positively. What is a leader to do when they notice a slow degenerative change in morale or when a department has become toxic? This is when clearly defined progressive discipline can be used as a tool to guide a department back on track. Progressive discipline should not be punitive especially if it incorporates a sense of belonging steeped in DEI. Using positive discipline techniques that reinforce connectedness, team spirit, and genuine …

Addressing The Unmentionable At The Circulation Desk: An Unlikely Library Partnership For An Often-Overlooked Cause: Period Equity, Jessica Garner

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

The role of libraries at universities has grown over the years in surprising ways to improve service to the academic and student community. One such surprising change came from a project aimed at decreasing period poverty. The Period Equity Movement (PEM) was created in collaboration with the university’s Office of Student Wellness and Health Promotion through funding that came from a $48,000 Sustainability Fee grant and other internal funding. The grant specifically focused on purchasing reusable products such as menstrual cups and fabric pads and organic disposable tampons and pads. The Access Services Department became an impactful partner in this …

It Is A Constitution We Are Expounding: John Marshall, Spencer Roane, And The Fundamental Conflicts Surrounding Mcculloch V. Maryland (1819), Catherine T. Meisenheimer

Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas

Using a blend of primary and secondary sources, this research paper examines the lesser-known newspaper debate between Chief Justice John Marshall and Judge Spencer Roane of the Virginia Court of Appeals. The purpose of this research is to answer one question: What were the fundamental issues that divided early Americans as demonstrated by the landmark case of McCulloch v. Maryland (1819)? To contribute to the ongoing discussion of McCulloch and its significance, my paper attempts to understand the issues surrounding McCulloch within its broader, historical context. Instead of confining its importance to the Second Bank of the United States, I …

The Influence Of Race In Americans’ Trust Of Government, David B. Gomez Nov 2023

The Influence Of Race In Americans’ Trust Of Government, David B. Gomez

Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas

The percentage of Americans who trust the government in Washington always or most of the time has been increasingly declining since the John F. Kennedy presidency in the early 1960s The reasons for this sharp downward bend are unclear. Americans do worry about political disagreement, which they see as an indication of an anomaly in the system. However, given the choice, they would rather concern themselves about nonpolitical issues. That factor has not stopped them from failing to trust their government. The expectations placed by Americans on their administration are excessively high. Thus, disappointment is inevitable. The declining trust exhibited …

Jefferson And Tocqueville On Christian Nationalism, Grahm M. Staib Nov 2023

Jefferson And Tocqueville On Christian Nationalism, Grahm M. Staib

Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas

The United States’ longstanding principle of the separation of church and state has been put into question by proponents of Christian nationalism who seek to make the United States an established Christian state. This paper seeks to argue that Thomas Jefferson’s philosophy was based on sound reasoning, and its benefits to American society were later recognized by French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville. Furthermore, this paper uses Jefferson’s philosophy and Tocqueville's analysis and applies it to the contemporary relationship between church and state in the United States to argue that Christian nationalism is unfeasible, and that religion should remain a private …

Bureaucratic Politics Run Amok: The United States And Satellite Export Controls, Eligar Sadeh

Space and Defense

The case of export controls of United States (U.S.) commercial satellites is characterized by bureaucratic politics leading to policy outcomes that are not rational, i.e., the desired outcome of national security is not met and commerce in the satellite sector is harmed. The constraints to rational policy making are a result of competition, conflict, and protectionism, the “bureaucratic politics,” among the relevant actors including the U.S. President and Congress, Department of State (State), Department of Commerce (Commerce), and Department of Defense (DOD). It is bureaucratic politics that result in policies for licensing the export of commercial satellites that are far …

The American Bubble: International Traffic In Arms Regulations And Space Commerce, Roger Handberg Nov 2023

The American Bubble: International Traffic In Arms Regulations And Space Commerce, Roger Handberg

Space and Defense

International space commerce in the United States (U.S.) has entered into a period of great uncertainty regarding its current and future competitiveness and marketability of its products. This question arises because the U.S. with regard to space commerce remains frozen in a posture established first during the Cold War. The concern then was that no critical technologies be made available to U.S. enemies and their fellow travelers. The former were obvious while the latter were more problematic since that group also included states with which the U.S. wished to establish more positive relations including international trade. The mechanism used to …

The History Of United States Weapons Export Control Policy, Taylor Dinerman Nov 2023

The History Of United States Weapons Export Control Policy, Taylor Dinerman

Space and Defense

All nations regulate Arms sales, but the United States (U.S.) has traditionally gone further than most. After World War I, a conspiracy theory made its way into popular culture that blamed the war, and specifically the U.S. intervention in 1917, on the so called “merchants of death.” Ever since, this has been a powerful and enduring theme in politics and culture throughout the world. Yet, nowhere have the effects of this theory been more enduring than in U.S. policy and law.
