Knowledge Syntheses Search Strategy Repositories: Canadian Case Studies, Heather Cunningham, Sabine Calleja, Julia Martyniuk, Daniela Ziegler, Alix Pincivy, Jill Boruff, Alisa Rod

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

Knowledge synthesis research is central to evidence-based medicine. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses literature search extension (PRISMA-S) outlines full reporting of the search strategy component including uploading documentation of all search strategies into a data repository to increase accessibility, transparency, and reproducibility. In response to the PRISMA-S recommendations, Canadian universities and health care institutions have been increasingly offering local services for librarians to support depositing and sharing search strategies in a digital data repository on the Borealis platform. Borealis, the Canadian Dataverse Repository, is a bilingual, multidisciplinary, secure, Canadian research data repository which supports open discovery, …

Getting Creative: Implementing "Fan Favorite" Voting In Digital Commons Event, Jennifer Deal, Elizabeth Suelzer

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

Problem/Scenario: The coordinators of our institution's 2023 Scientific Day event wanted to allow attendees to cast votes for a new Fan Favorite poster award and they asked library staff for help in making this possible. Library staff maintain the institutional repository (IR) for our large health care system, and posters from Scientific Day are deposited in the IR so they are visible to judges and attendees during the virtual event. Our Digital Commons IR did not have a built-in voting system, so library staff used Springshare's LibWizard and our HTML and design skills to add "Like" buttons to conference posters …

Pure-Ly For Authors: An Update Of A Health System Researcher Profile Platform, Heather J. Martin, Amanda Schwartz

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

In 2023, a large healthcare system transitioned their institutional repository's author profile service to an upgraded and more comprehensive platform, and in doing so re-energized author and leadership buy-in.

After Digital Commons'™ Expert Gallery Suite eliminated some functionality, institutional repository (IR) staff began the process of exploring other author profile platforms that would align with essential workflows. Elsevier's™ Pure rose to the top of compatible and robust platforms suitable to replace our previous solution.

Pure's™ automated importing and database-integration was a primary draw, but IR staff had to find creative ways to utilize the administrative features that didn't integrate with …

Israel-Palestine Conflict, Gabriel Mott Nov 2023

Israel-Palestine Conflict, Gabriel Mott

Critical Questions

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a powerful surprise attack on the state of Israel, killing more than one thousand people. While this may represent a spike in violence, it is not the beginning. Tensions have existed on the West Bank since the onset of World War I, while a series of negotiations, third party interventions, and frequent violence has exacerbated the problem in the following decades. With this in mind, this Critical Question identifies key actors in the conflict, the history and progression of the conflict, and reasonable predictions for the future of the conflict in the Middle East.

How To Define (Or Not To Define) The New History Of Capitalism, Sharon Ann Murphy Nov 2023

How To Define (Or Not To Define) The New History Of Capitalism, Sharon Ann Murphy

Economics Faculty Publications

Lindsay Schakenbach Regele’s essay “A Brief History of the History of Capitalism, and a New American Variety” attempts to provide more structure to the field known as the new history of capitalism (NHOC) by defining martial capitalism as a new variant. In contrast, this essay asserts that the lack of definitional precision within the NHOC is not a bug, but rather one of its key features. To define capitalism would be to delimit where it was and was not present historically. If part of the argument of the NHOC is that capitalism pervaded—indeed infected—all aspects of American life, then defining …

Provoking Gut-Level Reactions: A Study On Journalistic Framing During The 2020 Meatpacking Crisis, Michelle Rossi, Patrick Ferrucci Nov 2023

Provoking Gut-Level Reactions: A Study On Journalistic Framing During The 2020 Meatpacking Crisis, Michelle Rossi, Patrick Ferrucci

Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications

This study investigates news frames used by mainstream news media in the United States to portray the 2020 meatpacking crisis. By integrating framing and animal standpoint theory, it reveals the mechanisms that perpetuate social ignorance about daily practices within the meat industry, particularly those that exclude the perspectives of farmed animals. Through an engagement with intersectional ecofeminism and Critical Animal and Media Studies (CAMS), the investigation probes the cyclical patterns of violence inflicted upon farmed animals in the meat industry as portrayed by news outlets, a phenomenon that simultaneously impacts marginalized human communities. The inclusion of farmed animals as news …

Underlying Mechanisms Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder In An Experimental Fear-Conditioning Paradigm, Melissa Hartnell

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the potential underlying mechanisms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) including fear generalization, maladaptive avoidance, and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) in a sample of adults with GAD, as compared to healthy controls in the context of a lab-based fear conditioning paradigm. The current study utilized data from the University of Minnesota ANGST Laboratory’s Danger Zone – Research Domain Criteria (DZ-RDoC) neuroimaging study. Participants consisted of 40 individuals ranging from ages 18-60, with 19 meeting criteria for GAD (M age = 30.57, SD = 11.70) and 21 healthy controls (M age = …

Recent Demographic Trends Have Implications For Rural Health Care, Kenneth M. Johnson Nov 2023

Recent Demographic Trends Have Implications For Rural Health Care, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, Senior Demographer Kenneth Johnson reports nonmetropolitan (rural) America gained population between April of 2020 and July of 2022. In the preceding decade, rural areas lost population, both because more people left rural areas than moved to them and because births just minimally exceeded deaths. In contrast, the recent, modest rural population increase occurred because a significant net migration gain more than offset the growing excess of deaths over births fostered by the pandemic. That rural migration was strong enough to produce population growth is especially surprising given that deaths outnumbered births—in part due to the pandemic—in 85 …

ESI Publications

Background

In industrialized populations, low male testosterone is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular mortality. However, coronary risk factors like obesity impact both testosterone and cardiovascular outcomes. Here, we assess the role of endogenous testosterone on coronary artery calcium in an active subsistence population with relatively low testosterone levels, low cardiovascular risk and low coronary artery calcium scores.

Methodology

In this cross-sectional community-based study, 719 Tsimane forager-horticulturalists in the Bolivian Amazon aged 40+ years underwent computed tomography (49.8% male, mean age 57.6 years).

Results

Coronary artery calcium levels were low; 84.5% had no coronary artery calcium. Zero-inflated negative binomial models …
