Digitalization of administration, teaching and learning in public universities began before the pandemic. The pandemic however challenged public universities to speed up digitalization in order to create efficient platforms for administrative, teaching and learning environments. Literature suggests that Zimbabwe’s public universities have not kept pace with technological trends since they are faced with a myriad of challenges. Challenges include inadequate funding for digitalization programs, high costs of bandwidth, persistent power outages and lack of digital skills. Financial cybercrime is growing in South Africa. The elderly population are a particularly vulnerable demographic to financial cybercrime. This research explores the factors contributing to financial cybercrime vulnerabilities among elderly citizens in disadvantaged communities in South Africa. A theoretical model based on Routine Activity Theory (RAT) was constructed. Findings from in-depth interviews show that cybercriminals take advantage of the elderly’s technology inexperience, using clever social engineering tactics and deceit to access personal and financial information. The study establishes a direct connection between low technology literacy and increased exposure to financial cybercrimes in South Africa, showing a dependence on younger family …

The genetic polymorphism of the casein genes and the evaluation of haplotype variability in Saanen and Thai Native breeds in Thailand were investigated. The 23 Saanen and 42 Thai Native goats were genotyped at CSN1S1, CSN2, CSN1S2, and CSN3 loci using sequencing techniques. Three variants of A, C, and E on the CSN1S1 gene locus were demonstrated. The genotypic frequencies of CSN1S1 AA, AC, and AE are shared by over 80% of the population. The CSN2 A and F alleles were observed. Reducing inequality has been the main focus of every country. This study is an attempt to measure consumption expenditure inequality in Pakistan by focusing on food and non-food components. The study uses secondary data to cover surveys from 2005-06 till 2018-19 using decomposed data taken from Household integrated expenditure survey of Pakistan. Gini coefficient has been used to measure inequality. The study finds fluctuating trends in inequality. Overall both food and non-food consumption inequality has slightly decreased but overall food consumption expenditure inequality increased in 2018-19 when we compared the results with year 2015-16. Although much is known about recidivism risk, less is known about factors predicting early release. The current study analyses a sample of 2,070 adult felony probation clients to see if offense characteristics, domains from the Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS), and demographic variables impact both revocation and successful early release. Results revealed that predictors of early release mirrored those of revocation with one exception—race. Specifically, Black clients were 27% less likely to be granted early release. The findings highlight the TRAS is an effective tool to help mitigate bias for revocation of probation but not for granting early release.

This paper provides an overview of the manufacturing work experience of different racial groups. Our goal is to lend support to “middle-out” policy responses that seek to promote greater economic opportunity across the country through targeted sector growth, including manufacturing, while also bringing together people of all races in support of manufacturing regeneration. By pinpointing persistent inequities in U.S. manufacturing, we hope to embolden policy responses that ensure that as the manufacturing sector rebounds and continues to evolve, its high-paying, good-quality jobs are also more inclusive of workers of color.

This study intervenes in a growing scholarly dialogue about neoliberalism in social work and social welfare by addressing the undertheorized concept of resistance. We conduct a scoping review of 54 articles published from 2008–2023 to answer two questions: how is resistance discussed in relation to neoliberalism, and what are the practice elements of resistance? Findings highlight resistance as a diverse phenomenon enacted in relation to context-specific manifestations of neoliberalism. A range of actors engage in resistance, including individual practitioners, social service organizations and collective action entities, among others. This paper uses climate normals to assess historic changes in temperature and precipitation in Alabama. Changes in temperature and precipitation are calculated between climate normals periods at 18 weather stations across the state and for the state as a whole. The earliest climate normals period for which data are available is 1931-60 and the most recent is 1981-2010. Results show that Alabama has gotten cooler and wetter over the whole period of record, particularly in the fall and winter. However, changes between climate normals periods show these trends are reversing

A number of recent studies suggest that in light of anthropogenic climate change, sugar maple (Acer saccharum) may not be adapted to persist over much of its current range. We consider variation in the species’ photosynthetic properties across its range. Seeds from Tennessee, Illinois, and Michigan were grown under laboratory conditions and in two experimental plots in Illinois and Michigan forests. In the Michigan forest, seedlings derived from Michigan seeds had significantly higher rates of carbon assimilation than those from Illinois. In the Illinois forest, seedlings from Tennessee had significantly greater carbon assimilation rates and light saturation points than seedlings …

This paper analyzes the relationship between weather patterns and bird migration to determine the feasibility of a site-specific migration forecast. Autumn migration data from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Pennsylvania for ten species were correlated with individual weather variables. Stepwise multiple linear regressions revealed a positive relationship with raptor migration to northwesterly winds and wind speed and an inverse relationship to sea level pressure. Composite maps were created using data from days with the greatest migration counts for each species and categorized by synoptic situations. This manuscript presents results from a quantitative exploratory study of how a faculty-led hybrid orientation impacted the self-efficacy and readiness to engage in hybrid learning of incoming master’s students in a nationally-accredited counseling program in the U.S. Median difference analyses did not indicate that participants’ post-orientation scores differed significantly on the measures used to assess self-efficacy (i.e., CSES, PEU, LMSE). While participants’ self-efficacy ratings did not change significantly as a result of orientation activities, scores for 89% of participants increased or stayed the same. The majority of CACREP accredited online counselor education programs are limited residency distance learning programs. Including a residency experience in online programs can help foster community, increase student engagement, and teach important skills needed to be an effective counselor, including counseling and advocacy skills. In this article, the authors describe one program’s approach to developing a two-day virtual residency program in combination with a concurrent course utilizing the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competency framework. Roleplays, guest presenters, and counseling skills instruction and practice were utilized in the residency program. Student feedback, implications, limitations, and future directions are also discussed.
