BACKGROUND: Although regular physical activity (PA) mitigates the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) during midlife, existing PA interventions are minimally effective. Harnessing social influences in daily life shows promise: digital micro-interventions could effectively engage these influences on PA and require testing.

PURPOSE: This feasibility study employed ecological momentary assessment with embedded micro-randomization to activate two types of social influences (i.e., comparison, support; NCT04711512).

METHODS: Midlife adults (N = 30, MAge = 51, MBMI = 31.5 kg/m2, 43% racial/ethnic minority) with ≥1 CVD risk conditions completed four mobile surveys per day for 7 days while wearing PA monitors. After 3 days …

In this paper, we explore the potential economic impacts associated with a major hurricane making landfall in Hampton Roads. We estimate the direct damages from a Florence-like Category 3 hurricane with a 3.6 feet tidal offset are estimated at $15.6 billion, equivalent to 10% of the 2022 regional GDP. If we apply existing flood insurance rates to these projected damages, we estimate that the total economic impact would exceed $12 billion with a short-term loss of more than 76,000 jobs. The job losses are concentrated in sectors that provide services to households which would bear the brunt of damages during …

Reducing Juvenile Recidivism: An Analysis Of Programs, Caitlyn M. Lewis

The Mid-Southern Journal of Criminal Justice

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and determine the best programmatic-related approach to reduce juvenile recidivism in the United States. Three main programs will be analyzed in this paper. Those programs are multisystemic therapy and wraparound approach, mentoring programs, and reentry and aftercare programs. These programs have proven to be highly successful via empirical research. By looking at and analyzing peer-reviewed research, the findings concluded that reentry and aftercare programs are the most successful. These conclusions were reached by evaluating each program type by three different criteria: research support, accessibility, and administrative ease. While reentry and aftercare programs …

Particularly, the use of violence against minorities, especially Black individuals, is becoming more widely criticized by the public, scholars, and activists. This identification of policing violence relates to the militarization of policing, wherein the adoption of military equipment and tactics have contributed to increased violent targeting of minority communities. The purpose of this paper is to examine what affects individual’s perceptions of the police through a review of the literature. Because the police work directly with their community, opinions that their communities hold of the police can affect their ability to perform their job effectively. Particular focus is given to justice-impacted persons. A justice-impacted person is an individual who is at risk for incarceration, has been incarcerated, or has had family members incarcerated. This paper is an examination of intimate partner violence shelter websites identified by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) across six states to include North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. A sample of 217 websites were identified through the NCADV and analyzed with focus on what information they contained. There is significant variability between website content. Most shelter websites provide crisis hotline information, operating information or that they operate 24/7, but basic information like the cost of the shelter or if transportation is provided is not always available. Accidental poisoning of children in the United States is a problem, especially for vulnerable children with developmental disabilities. Research has shown that active learning approaches such as behavioral skills training are more effective for teaching poison safety skills to children with disabilities. Some research also suggests that video modeling and video self-modeling (VSM) may be effective for teaching safety skills to children with disabilities. As only one study has evaluated VSM for teaching gun safety skills, more research is needed to evaluate this intervention. Bike Buses are a relatively new form of Active Transportation to School (ATS) that have gained popularity in Europe and the United States in recent years. Generally, a bike bus consists of one or more adult supervisors, often parents, who guide a group of students along a defined ‘route’ to one or more schools. Background: Veterans of the 1990-1991 Gulf War have experienced excess health problems, most prominently the multisymptom condition Gulf War illness (GWI). The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Cooperative Studies Program #2006 "Genomics of Gulf War Illness in Veterans" project was established to address important questions concerning pathobiological and genetic aspects of GWI. The current study evaluated patterns of chronic ill health/GWI in the VA Million Veteran Program (MVP) Gulf War veteran cohort in relation to wartime exposures and key features of deployment, 27-30 years after Gulf War service.

Petroglyph National Monument (PETR) resides at the intersection of geology, urban development, and environmental preservation. As the site of convergence for these complex systems, this National Park site is an example of what kinds of interactions occur between humans and nonhumans and how these interactions mediate our broader understanding of material world. This project utilizes literature from more-than-human geographies and new materialism to examine how these interactions inform the management strategies of PETR. Catholic Subject Headings, a list of subject headings focused on describing and representing Catholic belief, ritual, and culture, was first published in 1942 by the Catholic Library Association for use in Catholic libraries. The creation of a cataloging tool solely to represent and serve a distinct religious population allows for an imposition of religious worldview by those utilizing Catholic Subject Headings onto the materials they interacted with. The need for a specifically Catholic cataloging system is also revealing of the complex tensions between Catholics and Protestants and within the American Catholic community in 20^th century America.

Digital Natives, Digital Activists In Non-Digital Environments: How The Youth In Zambia Use Mundane Technology To Circumvent Government Surveillance And Censorship, Gregory Gondwe

This study investigates the technological strategies the youth in Sub-Saharan Africa employ to circumvent government surveillance and censorship. Centered on the 2020 Zambian youth protests and informed by interviews with 37 participants, we explore the youth’s innovative use of mundane skills to build digital communities, evade government surveillance, and leverage algorithms. The findings indicate that despite limited online access and government restrictions, the Zambian youth creatively employed their local skills to build social networks, disseminate information, and mobilize for social change. However, two contrasting narratives emerge: one celebrating the innovation and resilience of these young people, with the other raising …
