Urban Street Systems In Nineteenth-Century Ohio Towns: An Analysis Of Diffusion, John M. Wegner

This study considers the possible “migration” of urban street patterns associated with discrete east coast culture regions to America’s trans-Appalachian interior during the 19th century. Also examined was the possibility that these street patterns became less “culturallybound,“ or more admixed, over time. Ohio, one of the first (and most culturally diverse) trans-Appalachian states, was the focus of the study. To ascertain answers to the above questions, data pertaining to town platting throughout the state (as well as for four distinct survey regions associated with discrete east coast migration) was culled from county atlases and histories. INTRODUCTION This study examines the current human rights abuses found at the United States and Mexico border. For the purposes of this paper, human rights are defined as found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, but other agreements may be cited for reference. What one person considers an abuse, another person may coin as a reality of life. What is a mentor? I serve as a mentor for two groups: one, to offer advice, to give counsel, and basically to help out new employees within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); and the other, as an advisor for the Louisiana Environmental Education Association working with new teachers. With USGS, the mentoring is a function of being designated a leader within the Bureau. Because of the size of the USGS, many individuals are mentored by long distance telephone conversations or email communication. These individuals are mostly interested in administrative issues, personal advancement, and misunderstood situations with their supervisors and co-workers. …

In Memoriam O. Orland Maxfield: A Biographical Sketch, Virgil Holder

O. Orland Maxfield, born in 1925, was raised on a farm near Robinson, Illinois, and he always referred to Robinson as his home. His father was a Methodist minister who died when Orland was eleven. His mother, who graduated from Northwestern University, raised him in a disciplined manner. This shows in the fact that he earned his Bachelor’s degree at George Peabody College for Teachers in three years with a double major in Geography and English, graduating in 1945. He earned his Master’s of Arts degree in Geography at Ohio State University in one year.

February 21, 2004 was a sad day for all of us acquainted with C. Nicholas Raphael. On that morning, at age 66, he passed away suddenly, leaving a community he loved and one which loved him. Nick had been our dear friend and colleague for more than three decades. He will be remembered by many in the geographical profession as the editor of Gamma Theta Upsilon’s The Geographical Bulletin, a position he proudly occupied since 1987. Nick began a productive and fruitful life as the son of R. George and Angela Raphael on September 3, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan. He …

This paper analyzes the actions of key interest groups and major institutional regulatory agreements that influence land use change and water demand in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, in order to better understand the capacity of residents in the county to adapt to hydroclimatic hazards (drought and flooding). We found that there are strong special interest groups working in the region to ensure their own livelihoods and interests. At times, the actions of these groups enhance the adaptive capacity of the county, but their actions can also conflict with each other, producing a less-clear outcome for adaptation. Adaptation To The Effects Of Suburbanization And Drought In Central Massachusetts, Troy Hill, Colin Polsky

Central Massachusetts receives more than 1100 mm of precipitation each year on average, with little inter-annual variation. Despite this, water supply shortfalls have become increasingly common, demanding responses (adaptations) from community water systems. This paper examines the process of adapting to drought in a ten-town study area. A grounded theory approach to data collection and analysis was used. Methods consisted of archival work and interviews, which investigated how structural and agent-based forces affect adaptation to drought. Suburbanization revealed itself as a major stress on water systems, jeopardizing and complicating efforts to adjust to water shortages. Structural forces and local actors …

Concerns over the continual reduction of available groundwater in southwest Kansas have been increasing. This concern is compounded by the high dependence on irrigated agriculture and the related agribusiness industry, which is a staple to the regional economy and employs a large labor force. Future climate variation may enhance the sensitivity of the region to limited water availability. Through archival research and interviews, this study examines the impact of both structural forces (such as policy makers and legal bodies) and individual agents (local farmers, ranchers, and other citizens) on the capacity of southwest Kansas to adapt to climate variation. Veterans and their mental health face readjustment challenges based on veteran identity, intersectionality, and experiences from their time serving in the military. This comprehensive overview and PRISMA analysis investigate the current evidence-based practices of veterans' identity and intersectionality. Specifically, psychoeducation and evidence-based practices for veterans readjusting back into their communities. A gap identified in this research’s findings calls for suggestions for future research on the veteran population and intersectionality. No specific psychoeducation or evidence-based practices tailored for identity readjustment or veteran intersectionality were found. The purpose of this study is to explore the efficacy of the G.R.A.C.E Matrix®, a step-by-step technique of treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study uses case studies that serve as portrayals of adults who struggle with PTSD. The three cases, referred to as "Jamal," "Isabel," and "Joel," are based on disguised aspects of real psychotherapy patients from a psychotherapy clinic. By detailing the treatment courses of these patients, the study highlights critical clinical issues in engaging patients with evidence-based therapy. The cases illustrate how the G.R.A.C.E Matrix® treatment, beginning with written assessments and culminating in trauma-informed interventions, has …

This paper draws on preliminary data from a qualitative study in curriculum and pedagogy, “Stories of Teaching about Consciousness: An Inquiry into Worldviews and Wellbeing.” An emerging theme is the concept of the self and how it entwines with perspectives on consciousness. Analyzing consciousness and the self through The Five Contexts framework reveals assumptions at the heart of research and education that often go unquestioned. We wonder, what might alternative perspectives on consciousness and the self offer to researchers and educators? Decreasing financial health damages an organization’s reputation and economic viability to survive. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) leaders must strive to improve their financial health to protect their institution’s reputation and risk of closure. Grounded in strategic enrollment management theory, the purpose of this quantitative ex-post facto study was to examine the relationship between student enrollment, student retention, alumni giving, and financial health of HBCUs. The participants were 101 HBCUs collected from the National Center for Education Statistics and the Voluntary Support of Education databases, from 2020 to 2022.
