Online Dating Habits Amid Covid-19, Annabelle R. Winking
Anthós
In recent months, the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has swept across the globe, causing several countries to impose quarantines and social distancing measures for indeterminate amounts of time. This study investigates how dating has changed since the enforcement of social distancing due to Covid-19, specifically for Portland residents between 21 and 30 who were using mobile dating apps prior to Covid-19 and who continued to use them during the pandemic. I interviewed five Portland singles between the ages of 21-30 who use a variety of dating apps such as Tinder, Grindr, and Hinge, with one 30 minute semi-structured interview with each …

Reference-Dependent Choice On Digital Platforms, Joshua K. Kaisen
Reference-Dependent Choice On Digital Platforms, Joshua K. Kaisen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Throughout this dissertation I explore a significant departure from the standard model of rationality known as reference-dependence. The theory reference-dependence asserts that an individual’s choice is dependent on their frame of reference established through factors divorced from their rational cost and benefit. This behavior is inefficient as individuals fail to rationally optimize their payoffs. This behavior is understudied in natural settings where isolating specific stimuli which may establish a reference is challenging. However, digital platforms contain limited stimuli which are fully observable to researchers and present an ideal setting to study the theory of reference-dependence. Thus, I introduce three new …
Constructing The Heroic Whistleblower: A Social Scientific Approach, Brian K. Richardson, Joseph Mcglynn
Constructing The Heroic Whistleblower: A Social Scientific Approach, Brian K. Richardson, Joseph Mcglynn
Heroism Science
Many whistleblowers perform heroic acts, but not all whistleblowers are heroes. Motivation, method, and risk vary across whistleblower contexts. Although many whistleblowers portray aspects of archetypal heroism, research is needed to specify the qualities of heroic whistleblowers from non-heroic whistleblowers. The present study aims to develop an archetype of heroic whistleblowers. We identify five dimensions of whistleblowing heroism and then draw upon data from interviews that we conducted with 32 actual whistleblowers to provide examples of each element. We argue there are five dimensions of the whistleblowing process that distinguish heroic whistleblowers. The five dimensions include 1) motivation for blowing …
Understanding Police Decisions To Arrest: The Impact Of Situational, Officer, And Neighborhood Characteristics On Police Discretion, Jessica Huff
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Purpose
Promote the use of multilevel modeling to refine theories of police discretion. Specifically, examine the simultaneous influence of situational factors, responding officers, and neighborhood context on arrests guided by a social-ecological framework.
Methods
Cross-classified models were used to assess the outcomes of 835,381 incidents responded to by 835 Phoenix Police officers in 388 census tracts.
Results
Situational, officer, and neighborhood factors all significantly influence arrests. Incident-level factors account for most of the variation, followed by officers, and neighborhoods. Incidents that resulted in arrest were more likely to involve victims, a greater number of responding officers, female officers, and college-educated …

Ghana's Public Diplomacy Under Kwame Nkrumah, Isaac Antwi-Boasiako
Conference Papers
The concept of public diplomacy is one of the trending approaches in modern international relations and diplomacy. Communicating and engaging effectively with the foreign public in a particular nation by a government to achieve its foreign policy objective is every government’s goal. The field of public diplomacy as an academic discipline in Ghana in particular and Africa has not received much attention compared to the Western World. This article attempts to bridge this gap by opening Ghana’s public diplomacy to academic scrutiny that has, as yet, been underdeveloped. This paper’s principal objective is to bring to light the public diplomacy …

Adequate child nutrition is critical to child development, yet child malnutrition is prevalent in crisis settings. However, the intersection of malnutrition and disasters is sparse. This study reviews existing evidence on nutrition responses and outcomes for infants and young children during times of crisis. The scoping review was conducted via two approaches: a systematic search and a purposive search. For the systematic search, two key online databases, PubMed and Science Direct, were utilized. In total, data from 32 studies were extracted and included in the data extraction form. Additionally, seven guidelines and policy documents were included, based on relevance to …
Creating Modern Technological System For Grass Product Processing To Guarantee Macroscopic Food Security, Tianwei Wang, Jin Zhong
Creating Modern Technological System For Grass Product Processing To Guarantee Macroscopic Food Security, Tianwei Wang, Jin Zhong
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The construction of a scientific and technological system of ecological grass-based livestock husbandry (GLiH) provides technical support for the "Macroscopic Food Security" concept and the "National Strategy of Giving Priority to Ecology and Green Development" in the new era. At the same time, it represents an urgent need for the domestic circulation. Scientific grass processing and production of forage grass can help form the GLiH industrial chain by connecting the front-end "forage grass cultivating" and back-end "livestock raising". However, China still faces many problems in terms of forage grass processing and production, and the development of the grass industry. On …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
China enters into a new era with high demand for nutritional and healthy food, and hence needs to adjust the agricultural production system to balance cereal production and livestock farming. Between the years 2010-2019 the production of red meat and milk has fallen far behind the consumption demand, resulting in sourcing and import of large quantity of red meat and milk products from the international market. In comparison to the average consumption levels in Asia and global, China's consumption will continue to grow in the future, presenting a great challenge to the goals of 85% self-sufficiency rate for beef and …

Current Situation And Prospect Of Forage Breeding In China, Jingbo Jin, Tai Wang, Youfa Cheng, Lei Wang, Jingyu Zhang, Haichun Jing, Kang Chong
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
High-yield and high-quality forage varieties are the key to sustainable development of grass-based livestock husbandry in China. However, the forage breeding was started late in China, and the progress is very slow, and the forage varieties of independent intellectual property rights are seriously lacked. Forages generally have self-incompatibility, natural allogamy, polysomic inheritance, and marked inbreeding effects. Subsequently, it is difficult to characterize agronomically important complex traits, resulting that the breeding technology is still in the 2.0 era of hybrid breeding. The molecular design-based breeding is a fine strategy to speed up the breeding process, however, there is a lack of …
