Creating Topical Exhibits In Digital Commons, Linda Tesar
Sandbox Series
When the William & Mary Law School Equity and Inclusion Exhibits Committee decided to begin hosting a series of physical exhibits with online components, the Wolf Law Library staff eagerly offered the scholarship repository as the best place to house the online exhibits collection. In late February, the library launched the first digital exhibit, “Black History at W&M Law.” In this talk, Linda will discuss the repository structure and format W&M chose, how different material was integrated into the collection, and give some insight into what worked and what didn’t.

The Societal Impacts Of Covid-19 On Asian Americans: Mitigating Mental Health Disparities Stemming From Labels Like The “China Virus”, Elisabeth Dubois, Xiaojun (Jenny) Yuan
Addressing Differential Impacts of COVID-19 in New York State: A Symposium
The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affects socially vulnerable populations, including Asian Americans whereupon a host of disparities have worsened their mental health amid the crisis. In this, disparities arise given that Asian Americans disproportionately hold high-contact essential jobs that place them at greater health risk, Asian-owned businesses are overrepresented in sectors that have been hardest hit by COVID-19, and anti-Asian xenophobia and racism have been exacerbated. This paper seeks to investigate the theory of interactionism as it relates to the nature of the disparities faced by Asian Americans. The COVID-19 pandemic has signified the othering of sub-sections of the population, where …

What Underpins Good Child-Centred Practices In Children’S Social Services?, Carol Mcloughlin, Deirdre Connolly, Shauna Mccarthy, Linda Weir, Niamh O'Rourke, Rachel Flynn
Journal of Social Care
The children who engage with children’s social services are some of those who are at most risk of harm and abuse in society (Health Information and Quality Authority, 2012). The aim of the study was to identify what underpins good child-centred practice in children’s social services. This study was conducted to inform the development of National Standards for Children's Social Services. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) undertook a public scoping consultation to consult with people who have experience of children’s social services. Also a literature review was conducted as part of a review and synthesis of literature and …
Dialogue Et Discours Attributif Dans Un Barrage Contre Le Pacifique De Marguerite Duras, Rabia Maaroufi
Dialogue Et Discours Attributif Dans Un Barrage Contre Le Pacifique De Marguerite Duras, Rabia Maaroufi
Dirassat
This article is a study of attributive discourse through the work of Marguerite Duras. The author proposes an analysis based on the variety of expressive verbs and the dominance of the neutral verb in the novel. The article also explores the notion of non-communication and conversation. Drawing up a complete picture of a colonial life perceived as a positive vision of French colonialism, dialogue and discourse symbolize the vanity of the characters' efforts to get out of their condition.
Resilience In Social Care Leaders And Managers, Mags Keane
Resilience In Social Care Leaders And Managers, Mags Keane
Journal of Social Care
Resilience is a concept that is increasingly being referenced in relation to the modern day workforce where expectations on staff are to maintain the demands of the pressures and adversity faced in their working roles without any long term ill effects. Social care workers face adversity in varied forms due to the nature of the work that they do. This study examines the social care role and perceptions of factors that support the development of resilience in social care staff, which includes both individual protective factors and protective factors within organisations. A qualitative approach was used to explore the participants’ …

The sociolinguistic configuration of Morocco reveals that Morocco is a multi-lingual country. Many languages coexist in it. They are of unequal importance, though, the language-field prevailing in Morocco is characterized by the prevalence of an array of languages and dialects (cf Abbassi, 1977; Boukous, 1979; Gravel, 1979; Bentahila, 1983; Ennaji, 1991...). This field remains highly distinct from the multi-racial mosaic finding form in some countries like(...) Cameroon or Tanzania (El Gherbi 1993:13). It produces an area where the confrontation of historical and language factors results into the coexistence of certain dialects. It also contributes to the evolution of some languages …

The present article seeks to shed light on a fundamental issue in contemporarydiscourse, namely, the issue of functionalgrammar. It argues that Speech Interaction Model, Dynamic Discourse Models, Career Perspectives of Discourse, Comprehensive Rhetoric Decisions: Space, Event, Speech Type Selection, Speech Style Selection, Speech World Mode, Speech Achievement... are components that should be invoked in order to contribute to this grammatical model. This integration mainly serves to avoid the disintegration of speech in the form of words and sentences as it may not reflect natural language. The latter is replete with evidence showing that speech is a social and interactive event …

Translating A Human Rights-Based Approach Into Health And Social Care Practice, Sarah Fitzgerald, Laura Behan, Shauna Mccarthy, Linda Weir, Niamh O'Rourke, Rachel Flynn
Journal of Social Care
The aim of this work was to translate the legalistic nature of human rights into a practical way of working for those working across health and social care services in Ireland. In particular, it aimed to identify specific barriers to implementation of a human rights-based approach (HRBA) to care, most notably in terms of gaps in knowledge of frontline staff and to develop practical resources such as guidance to show how they can respect, promote and uphold people’s rights. A comprehensive literature review was undertaken and extensive engagement with health and social care stakeholders including, staff, advocates, and adults who …

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
When asked what the barriers were to digitizing and sharing their unique collections online, many smaller cultural heritage institutions say a lack equipment, systems, and expertise. Our answer to that: mobile digitization lab, training, and digital collections hosting. Western Michigan University Libraries, in partnership with the Gilmore Car Museum and Richland Community Library, has been developing a model that aims to make digitization, metadata creation, and digital collection building possible for smaller-scale regional libraries and cultural heritage institutions. Supported by a LSTA grant though the Library of Michigan, and leveraging digital collection building expertise at WMU, this pilot project will …

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
Hidden away in the darkest recesses of some libraries you will find... Wait! Don't! Don't open that microcard drawer!!
Seriously, it feels that way when you walk by those long-neglected microcards. Very few cataloging records exist so discoverability is close to zero, and if there are records how do you read the cards? Wouldn't it be great if you could bring that microcard back to life so the content could be used? Good news! A collaborative open-access effort to do so is underway. After two successful pilot projects, working with roughly 2700 Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) reports on microcard, the …
Development, Feasibility, And Acceptability Of A Healthy Relationship Intervention Among College Student-Athletes: A Mixed Methods Study, Nicole Cantor
Theses and Dissertations
College student-athletes are one subgroup of college students at risk for unhealthy relationship behaviors. Despite this, research on student-athletes dating behaviors is limited, and what research does exist pertains exclusively to Division I athletes, focusing on male student-athletes as perpetrators. While attempts have been made to mitigate instances of dating violence and promote healthy relationships, these interventions are education-based and not tailored to the specific strengths and challenges of student-athletes. In addition, the efficacy of these preexisting interventions has not yet been evaluated. The current study represents stage 1 of the NIH Stage Model for Behavioral Intervention Development and evaluates …

Quantifying The Impact Of Urbanization On The Fourche Creek Watershed, Little Rock, Arkansas, Zachary Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The Fourche Creek Watershed is an urban watershed in Central Arkansas, serving as the primary drainage basin for most of metropolitan Little Rock. As land surrounding streams is developed, the risk of negatively impacting water quality through the addition of contaminants like metals, sewage, and pesticides increases. The objective of this project is to introduce a novel method of quantifying the impact of urbanization on streams using a multi-pronged approach including mixing and spatial analyses, dissolved loads, and 87Sr/86Sr ratios throughout the Fourche Creek Watershed to discern specific contributions of baseflow and urban materials into the drainage basin. Generally, Coleman …

Vocabulary checklists completed by caregivers are a common way of measuring children’s vocabulary knowledge. We provide evidence from checklist data from 31 children with and without autism spectrum disorder. When asked to report twice about whether or not their child produces a particular word, caregivers are largely consistent in their responses, but where they are inconsistent, these inconsistencies affect verbs more than nouns. This difference holds both for caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder and caregivers of typically-developing children. We suggest that caregivers may be less sure of their child’s knowledge about verbs than nouns. This data converges with …

Mhealth For The Treatment Of Depression In Primary Care: A Feasibility Study, Krista Herbert
Theses and Dissertations
The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of implementing three mobile applications (apps) designed to ameliorate depressive symptoms within primary care. The secondary aim was to examine whether participants utilizing a mobile app would experience reductions in depressive symptoms and improvements in quality of life when compared to a waitlist control condition. Participants (n=3) were recruited from two primary care practices and randomized to: (a) a cognitive-behavioral app, (b) a mindfulness app, (c) a social problem-solving app, or (d) the waitlist control condition. Participants completed measures of depressive symptoms and quality of life at …

Globalizing Noncitizen Detention, Jaye Balentine
Anthós
This inquiry seeks to establish that the global expansion in regimes of noncitizen detention represents a contemporary expression of imperial subjectification under Western liberalism and that such regimes serve a key role in maintaining the capitalist social order. While several efforts have been made to explain the globalization of noncitizen detention practices stemming from the United States, there exists serious shortcomings in the proposed analyses. Namely, existing literature on the subject has failed to adequately account for the history of Western imperialism and the centrality of liberalism as a political ideology in this imperial project. By intervening in the existing …

Lessons From The Covid-19 Pandemic On The Role Of Socioeconomic Status In Health Outcomes, Leila Karout

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought upon the world many challenges, both for the health and safety of citizens and in the public health system. Along with these challenges, pre-existing inequalities have been exacerbated. Vulnerable populations have struggled during these times not only due to their increased likelihood of pre-existing health conditions, but in finding access to quality care and treatment. Thus, it is important to discuss and examine the outcomes of this pandemic for those most at risk as this is telling to the current state of our healthcare system and what changes should be made. COVID-19 has again revealed …

This essay comments on recent cinematographic productions that explore the complex links between Mexico and New York as part of the ʻMexico on the Hudsonʼ Online Film and Conversational Series, organized by the Mexican Studies Institute at City University of New York and the New York based non-profit media arts organization Cinema Tropical. The reflection takes the films I’m leaving now (Lindsey Cordero and Armando Croda 2019), On the Seventh Day (Jim Mackay 2018), and La Ciudad (David Riker 1998) as a sample that exemplifies a cultural and political phenomenon in which the mediated representation of contemporary minorities has been …

Introduction: Arab Americans are significantly affected by depression with prevalence as high as 50%. Our study assesses whether unique causes of depression such as stress, acculturation, and heritage identity play a role in the high prevalence of depression in Arab Americans. Methods: We surveyed 142 self-identified Arab Americans using a convenience model. Participants answered questions about their level of perceived stress, everyday discrimination, and acculturative stress. They also answered questions regarding their level of acculturation and heritage identity. Finally, participants answered questions regarding their depressive symptoms. A score of 16+ on the depression scale was used as the cut-off for …
What’S The Big Deal? How Researchers Are Navigating Changes To Journal Access, Danielle Cooper, Oya Y. Rieger
What’S The Big Deal? How Researchers Are Navigating Changes To Journal Access, Danielle Cooper, Oya Y. Rieger
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The dominant mode by which research libraries have provided maximum journal access as cheaply as possible—subscription bundles or “Big Deals”—is giving way to new approaches. This transition is taking place through a combination of negotiations, activism, business modeling, user needs research, and decision support, among other factors. To support these processes, Ithaka S+R partnered with 11 academic libraries to understand researcher perceptions to help inform their ongoing strategic decision making about Big Deal journal subscriptions.
Recognizing that libraries must also undertake case-by-case assessments prior to making decisions about any particular journal package, in this report we share findings from the …
Measuring State Empathy: Exploring The Efficacy Of A Film Clip Task And Examining Individual Differences In Empathic Responding, Stephanie R. Hruza
Measuring State Empathy: Exploring The Efficacy Of A Film Clip Task And Examining Individual Differences In Empathic Responding, Stephanie R. Hruza
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The study of trait empathy and the experience of empathy has implications for psychopathologies, the enactment of prosocial behaviors, and inhibition of aggression. For the most part, studies on empathy have been limited to the examination of trait empathy and/or empathy-related prosocial behaviors. However, to better understand how trait empathy may translate into empathy-related behaviors, it is important to find the best ways to elicit and measure state empathy, as well as characterize the relationship between trait and state empathy. Additionally, research into the relationship between normal-range personality traits and empathy on both a trait and state level has largely …

Evict The Speculators: An Analysis Of Moms 4 Housing, Kendra N. Ma
Master's Projects and Capstones
This paper contributes to the scholarly work on grassroots housing movements in the United States. More specifically, I explore how Moms 4 Housing’s activism challenged urban displacement regimes and offered pathways towards the human right to housing. My analysis of their movement reveals that they utilized three principle strategies to articulate their movement and push the agenda for the right to housing: 1) the use of corruption narratives to confront the state and urban speculators, 2) the application of “motherhood” as a political identity and a rights-based framework to challenge the capitalist property regime, and 3) direct action to shift …

Social Distancing In The Context Of Covid-19 Anxiety: A Social Cognitive Approach, Allyson S. Graf, Abigail Nehrkorn-Bailey, Amy Knepple Carney
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
As the impact of COVID-19 continues, engagement in social distancing is essential. Using Social Cognitive Theory, the current study examined the unique roles of COVID-19 anxiety and self-efficacy on the relationships between information-seeking and risk perception as predictors of social distancing intention. A convenience sample of 960 adults (M = 37.81 years, SD = 11.65) completed an author-designed online survey. Participants completed measures on behavioral intention, information-seeking, risk perception, COVID-19 anxiety, and self-efficacy. Moderated mediations examined the theoretically proposed relationships among the variables. COVID-19 anxiety moderated the relationship between risk perception and self-efficacy, but not the association between information-seeking …
