Spain: Deposit Guarantee Fund Asset Management, Manuel León Hoyos
Journal of Financial Crises
The global oil shock in 1973-74 occurred at a time when Spain was embarking on a liberalization of its financial system that resulted in many new entrants, particularly small- and medium-sized institutions. The banking crisis that followed from 1977-85 affected 52 of the country’s 110 banks, most of them of small- and medium-sized, that comprised over 20% of bank deposits. Spain established the Deposit Guarantee Fund in November 1977 to provide limited deposit insurance, and, in March 1978, established a Banking Corporation to take control of and reorganize troubled banks. However, because the Banking Corporation lacked the legal authority to …

Broad-Based Asset Management Programs, Christian M. Mcnamara, Greg Feldberg, Mallory Dreyer, Andrew Metrick
Journal of Financial Crises
Dealing with high levels of nonperforming assets (NPAs) on bank balance sheets is one of the most challenging aspects of financial crisis management. High levels of NPAs can interfere with both bank profitability and general economic growth by increasing uncertainty about bank solvency and therefore funding costs, tying up resources and attention, and inhibiting new lending. One potential solution to the NPA problem is a centralized, government-driven effort to remove these assets from troubled institutions and then manage and sell them. Though such broad-based asset management (BBAM) programs existed even earlier in history, they appear to have become more common …

Revisiting Subprime Pricing Irrationality During The Global Financial Crisis, Rasheed Saleuddin, Walter Jansson
Journal of Financial Crises
During the depths of the global financial crisis of 2008-09, many holders of subprime mortgage securitizations and related derivatives were forced to mark their investments to fair values based on observable prices in mortgage index credit default swap markets. Research has generally claimed that crisis pricing of such indices cannot be explained by fundamental analysis of the underlying markets, while marking portfolios to such “irrational” benchmarks may have contributed to severe distress in the financial sector. This paper econometrically demonstrates significant fundamentally-driven components in subprime mortgage index returns throughout the crisis. Our findings suggest that such benchmarks must be considered …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The publication journey for most of the researchers starts from the Ph. D. onwards. University guidelines for the Ph. D. enable the researchers to publish one or two papers in peer-reviewed journals. The inexperienced or young researchers are in a hurry in the process of publishing their articles. They are unaware of the predatory journals and they publish their articles in these predatory journals. The focus of the present paper is to create awareness among the young researchers and offer some basic knowledge so that they can avoid publishing in predatory journals.

A 32-item questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was validated by six experts and Cronbach alpha was used to determine its internal consistency which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.86. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the …
The Conspiracy Theory Defense In Response To Whistleblower Accusations: Turning A Hero Into A Villain, James K. Beggan
The Conspiracy Theory Defense In Response To Whistleblower Accusations: Turning A Hero Into A Villain, James K. Beggan
Heroism Science
Whistleblowers can be viewed as heroic actors who reveal institutional misdeeds. In contrast, conspiracy theorists are seen as members of a marginalized element perpetuating misinformation. Despite this apparent difference, the present analysis focuses on how similarities between the two constructs can allow a target to discredit a whistleblower accusation by countering that the whistleblower is operating as part of a conspiracy. More generally, this paper considers how the difficulty inherent in disproving conspiracy theory claims facilitates their utility as a defense. The case study of President Donald Trump’s responses to whistleblower accusations are considered to illustrate the arguments.

Pareto Distribution Under Hybrid Censoring: Some Estimation, Gyan Prakash
Pareto Distribution Under Hybrid Censoring: Some Estimation, Gyan Prakash
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
In the present study, the Pareto model is considered as the model from which observations are to be estimated using a Bayesian approach. Properties of the Bayes estimators for the unknown parameters have studied by using different asymmetric loss functions on hybrid censoring pattern and their risks have compared. The properties of maximum likelihood estimation and approximate confidence length have also been investigated under hybrid censoring. The performances of the procedures are illustrated based on simulated data obtained under the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and a real data set.

Calibration-Based Estimators Using Different Distance Measures Under Two Auxiliary Variables: A Comparative Study, Piyush Kant Rai, Alka Singh, Muhammad Qasim
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
This article introduces calibration estimators under different distance measures based on two auxiliary variables in stratified sampling. The theory of the calibration estimator is presented. The calibrated weights based on different distance functions are also derived. A simulation study has been carried out to judge the performance of the proposed estimators based on the minimum relative root mean squared error criterion. A real-life data set is also used to confirm the supremacy of the proposed method.

An Evaluation Of Distributed And Accumulated Reinforcer Arrangements On Skill Acquisition And Preference, Natalie R. Mandel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Discrete trial training (DTT), an evidence-based instructional procedure (Wong et al., 2015), is often used to teach skills to individuals with autism. Manipulations to the reinforcement component of DTT have increased its instructional efficiency, resulting in acquisition of skills in less time (e.g., Cividini-Motta & Ahearn, 2013). Results of previous studies (e.g., DeLeon et al., 2014) indicate that some individuals prefer to complete larger work requirements that result in a larger amount of a reinforcer (i.e., accumulated arrangement), rather than receiving access to small amounts of a reinforcer dispersed throughout the work requirement (i.e., distributed arrangement). In addition, accumulated reinforcer …

Mandatory Social Distancing For Covid-19 Outbreak And Its Economic Consequences In West Sumatera - Indonesia, Endrizal Ridwan, Besti Novianda
Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia
The Governor of West Sumatra Province of Indonesia imposed a mandatory social distancing (PSBB) to slow down the Covid-19 outbreak from 22 April to 7 June 2020. The cons argued that PSBB was ineffective because of the impossibility to limit people’s movements. The pros, on the other hand, viewed PSBB as a training facility to increase people’s awareness about the pandemic.
