Helping Student Athletes Succeed After Sports Through Workshops, Marcus L. Shaver Jr.

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Being a student athlete myself, I found this project would not only benefit me but would benefit my current teammates. What I have noticed is missing in the world of a student athlete is financial literacy programs and what to do after sports whether you make it professionally or not. Using my Capstone Project, I will be using an Innovative approach, emotional intelligence, and creative thinking broken down through workshops to help my fellow student athletes. I am going to meet with many professional contacts in the fields of finance and career-planning. This will go along with researching peer-reviewed sources …

Code Gray Response Team, Charlie A. Brizzee

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This video presentation addresses the declining feeling of safety by frontline clinical staff due to the recent escalation of combative patients and workplace violence in the healthcare setting, identified through Emotional intelligence and the approach created to address it. This project was crafted as an innovative and creative approach to addressing the issue in the clinical setting without adding additional staff or additional expense to the organization. Additionally, the approach had to be innovative and creative as the author does not own the current process, and knowing to receive stakeholder acceptance, the ownership had to remain with the current stakeholder. …

Distinguishing Autism Spectrum Disorder From Other Developmental Delays At 24 Months, Searcy Kaylee Oct 2021

Distinguishing Autism Spectrum Disorder From Other Developmental Delays At 24 Months, Searcy Kaylee

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in young children has been increasing over the past several years. Receiving individualized interventions at an early age (before age 3) drastically shifting the developmental trajectory of a child with ASD in a more positive direction, as well as improving the child’s level of functioning, showing the importance of early intervention for a child with ASD. To receive early interventions, a child must first be diagnosed with ASD. Some research suggests that characteristics of ASD can be seen in children by the time they are 24 months. However, research also shows that most …

An Adaptive Hazard Planning And Mitigation Framework For Responding To Urban Contamination In Karst Aquifer Systems, James Edward Troxell Oct 2021

An Adaptive Hazard Planning And Mitigation Framework For Responding To Urban Contamination In Karst Aquifer Systems, James Edward Troxell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Environmental hazards in karst regions are damaging and often go unnoticed until an issue has escalated to a point of affecting life or property. The field of emergency and environmental contamination response lacks planning or preparedness focused on remediating groundwater contamination in karst systems. A lack of preplanning before an incident can lead to confusion, delayed response, and the inability to remediate the contaminant. Due to the rapid movement of contaminants through urban karst groundwater aquifers, an efficient response plan that leverages localized data in a GIS should be developed and maintained in order to adequately respond. The objective of …

Exploratory Study Of Factors That Predict Underrepresented Minority Student Persistence In An Intervention Program, Cres'sena S. Thomas Oct 2021

Exploratory Study Of Factors That Predict Underrepresented Minority Student Persistence In An Intervention Program, Cres'sena S. Thomas

Dissertations

This study explores factors that predict persistence for underrepresented minority students participating in an intervention program that branches off into a Living Learning Community. This research is significant due to the growing change of student demographics across college campuses and the need for institutions to understand how they can assist in student persistence. The study was conducted as a quantitative study and responses from study participants were analyzed using SPSS. The findings concluded that cumulative GPA was the only significant factor in predicting persistence for this student population. There are some noteworthy mentions from the study regarding the Living Learning …

Chinese-U.S. Leadership: A Case Study Of A U.S. Manufacturing Company In China, Mengting Gong

Dissertations

The purpose of this case study is to gain a better understanding of the way in which some Chinese managers describe their leadership approaches and why they accept and use U.S. leadership approaches in a U.S. manufacturing company in China. Within the single-case (embedded) research design, in-depth interviews and existing data are two main methods of the researcher’s data collection. A purposeful sample (N = 8) of managers from the corporation served as participants. After collecting relevant qualitative data, two rounds of coding occurred. In the first round, initial coding was comprised of identifying codes from the transcripts. For the …

The Motive To Work: Assessing Organizational Motivation Within The Federal Probation System, Aleda M. Thomas

Dissertations

Competition within the United States workforce is growing at an unprecedented rate. Turnover rates of all organizations and businesses have reached an all-time high. According to the U.S. Labor Department, 4.3 million Americans quit their job in the month of August alone. Times have shifted to where the ball no longer resides on the side of employers, but now it resides with employees. As such, it is vital to ensure workplaces are enjoyable and encompass cultures that produce high levels of motivation, satisfaction, and engagement. As such, the retention of skilled and qualified employees must be at the forefront of …

The Impact Of Social Networking Sites On Online Boundaries And Relationship Satisfaction, Jay Ingram Oct 2021

The Impact Of Social Networking Sites On Online Boundaries And Relationship Satisfaction, Jay Ingram

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to increase understanding of how the use of social networking and online boundaries affects relationship satisfaction. Because the literature has not yet addressed how social networking intrusion affects couples, this study draws on previous research of face-to-face boundary setting. An instrument was developed specifically for this study to measure the extent of intrusion of social networking use from factors of romantic jealousy, partner surveillance, and relationship conflict. Previous research found these factors to have a negative impact on relationship satisfaction in face-to-face situations.

Three hundred thirty-one participants completed the Relationship Assessment Scale, the Social …

College Students Level Of Educational Success And Social Capital: A Comparison Of Traditional And Nontraditional Students, Travis Jacklyn Oct 2021

College Students Level Of Educational Success And Social Capital: A Comparison Of Traditional And Nontraditional Students, Travis Jacklyn

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study investigated how female/male nontraditional and traditional college students’ educational success could be influenced by both the social capital their family and friends provide and the responsibilities those close to them require. However, gender socialization may influence how certain networks, such as family and peers can help or hinder college students. Previous research found family and peers could help college students’ educational success (Betts et al., 2013; Seon, 2019), however, they can also be detrimental (Dill & Hayley, 1998). This study examined whether (1) gender and traditional/nontraditional student status are associated with educational success; and (2) whether support …

Privacy In Public Archives: Managing Personally Identifiable Information In Special Collections, Zachary G. Stein Oct 2021

Privacy In Public Archives: Managing Personally Identifiable Information In Special Collections, Zachary G. Stein

Faculty Scholarship

Archivists aim to make research and manuscripts accessible to the public. However, accessibility becomes tricky when donors or institutions enforce limitations. Sometimes limitations need to be enforced, especially when dealing with sensitive information such as personally identifiable information (PII), unpublished works, and student records. Redactions and restrictions may be necessary in these situations, but archives find this difficult to accomplish because of the size of the collections, results from previous accession practices, and the lack of staff and resources. The Special Collections department at Edith Garland Dupré Library, University of Louisiana at Lafayette is addressing this problem and has put …

Relations Between Social Comparisons And Physical Activity Among Women In Midlife With Elevated Risk For Cardiovascular Disease: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study., Danielle Arigo, Jacqueline A Mogle, Joshua M Smyth

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Women in midlife (ages 40-60) show decreases in physical activity (PA) that exacerbate risk for cardiovascular disease. Social comparisons (i.e., self-evaluations relative to others) are known to influence PA in other groups, but their association in this population is unknown. The present study used ecological momentary assessment to examine this relation among women in midlife with hypertension or another CVD risk condition (N = 75, M

Exploring And Exploiting The Dynamics Of Networks In Complex Applied Research Projects: A Reflection On Learning In Action, Paul Coughlan, David Coghlan, Clare Rigg, Denise O'Leary

Books/Book Chapters

Since 1984, the European Union (EU) has supported research and development activities covering almost all scientific disciplines through a series of multi-annual Framework Programmes. The current programme is Horizon 2020. Common across the key indicators of research project performance have been actions by companies, including introduce and test innovations new to the company or the market. Initiatives to achieve these objectives require researchers to generate transdisciplinary knowledge in partnership with practitioners as co-researchers. This paper reflects on the authors’ experience of engaging in five EU-funded complex applied research projects over 20 years. The paper locates the process of the five …

How Libraries Help Make Your Data Management As Easy As Pie, Jill Cofield, Carol Anne Germain, Lauren Puzier, Emily Kilcer Oct 2021

How Libraries Help Make Your Data Management As Easy As Pie, Jill Cofield, Carol Anne Germain, Lauren Puzier, Emily Kilcer

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Academic libraries at Association of Research Libraries (ARL) & Carnegie R1 universities in the U.S. and Canada provide leadership to deliver comprehensive integrated Web-based data management services for faculty, graduate students, and researchers. Data management makes data more findable, usable, and reproducible; supports an ethical, responsible research environment; and meets funder and journal data-sharing requirements. Since the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s 2013 memorandum requiring federal agencies to increase public access to the results of federally funded research, many funders and journals have mandated data planning and sharing. Developing high quality data management plans take time and …

Differential Motivation In Remote Educational Assessment: Person-Based Filtering Versus Response-Based Filtering, Sarah Alahmadi, Christine E. Demars Oct 2021

Differential Motivation In Remote Educational Assessment: Person-Based Filtering Versus Response-Based Filtering, Sarah Alahmadi, Christine E. Demars

Department of Graduate Psychology - Faculty Scholarship

Large-scale educational assessments are often considered low-stakes, increasing the possibility of confounding true performance level with low motivation. These concerns are amplified in remote testing conditions. To remove the effects of low effort levels in responses observed in remote low-stakes testing, several motivation filtering methods can be used to purify the data. We estimated scores from assessment data collected remotely in Spring 2021 six ways, applying examinee-based filtering methods (filtering examinees based on total time) and response-based filtering methods (filtering responses using the effort-moderated IRT model), varying the thresholds selected to separate solution behavior (SB) responses from rapid-guessing behavior (RGB). …

Item Parameter Recovery With And Without The Use Of Priors, Paulius Satkus, Christine E. Demars Oct 2021

Item Parameter Recovery With And Without The Use Of Priors, Paulius Satkus, Christine E. Demars

Department of Graduate Psychology - Faculty Scholarship

Marginal maximum likelihood (MML), a common estimation method for IRT models, is not inherently a Bayesian procedure. However, due to estimation difficulties, Bayesian priors are often applied to the likelihood when estimating 3PL models, especially with small samples. Little focus has been placed on choosing the priors for MML estimation. In this study, using samples sizes of 1000 or smaller, not using priors often led to extreme, implausible parameter estimates. Applying prior distributions to the c-parameters alleviated the estimation problems with samples of 1000; priors on both the a-parameters and c-parameters were needed for the samples of …

How To Stuff A Duck: Learning Artisan Foie Gras Production In France, Jean Lavigne Oct 2021

How To Stuff A Duck: Learning Artisan Foie Gras Production In France, Jean Lavigne

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

I have always hated the taste of liver. Calf’s liver, chicken liver, liverwurst, any kind of pâté that contains even a small amount of liver—for me, the taste is repulsive. I was once served a rabbit’s liver at a family meal in Italy, the prize morsel that is offered to guests; I choked it down with an unconvincing “Grazie.” I never imagined I would come to like a specific kind of liver enough to prepare it myself at home, much less to spend six weeks with an artisan foie gras producer in Southwestern France learning how to produce it from …
