The ability to probe nanoscale heat flow in a material is often limited by lack of spatial resolution. Here, we use a diamond-nanocrystal-hosted nitrogen-vacancy centre attached to the apex of a silicon thermal tip as a local temperature sensor. We apply an electrical current to heat up the tip and rely on the nitrogen vacancy to monitor the thermal changes the tip experiences as it is brought into contact with surfaces of varying thermal conductivity. By combining atomic force and confocal microscopy, we image phantom microstructures with nanoscale resolution, and attain excellent agreement between the thermal conductivity and topographic maps. …
Volatile Condensible Material Deposition In Leo Simulated Environment, Jinya Pu
Volatile Condensible Material Deposition In Leo Simulated Environment, Jinya Pu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicone and compounds are widely used in outer-space for bonding or potting spacecraft components. In geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO), the silicone may outgas species which can condense on optically sensitive surfaces and degrade their performance, therefore shortening the lifetime of spacecraft. In low-earth-orbit (LEO), the silicone rubber is subject to an energetic and corrosive environment. Atomic oxygen (AO) and ultraviolet radiation can cause abrasion and degradation of the silicone rubber, cause changes in existing condensed VCM films and affect the properties of VCM films condensing in this atmosphere. Experiments were performed to simulate GEO conditions. In …

Despite numerous organic semiconducting materials synthesized for organic photovoltaics in the past decade, fullerenes are widely used as electron acceptors in highly efficient bulk-heterojunction solar cells. None of the non-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells have achieved efficiencies as high as fullerene-based solar cells. Design principles for fullerene-free acceptors remain unclear in the field. Here we report examples of helical molecular semiconductors as electron acceptors that are on par with fullerene derivatives in efficient solar cells. We achieved an 8.3% power conversion efficiency in a solar cell, which is a record high for non-fullerene bulk heterojunctions. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed …
Morphology-Property Relationship For Binary Organic Thin Films, Alyssa Lynn Griffin
Morphology-Property Relationship For Binary Organic Thin Films, Alyssa Lynn Griffin
Master's Theses
Organic thin films can be readily mass-produced through solution-based fabrication methods including ink-printing and solution-casting because their light weight, flexibility, and inexpensive sources. Their applications range from organic field-effect transistors (OFET), organic solar cells (OSC), to organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Compared with pure component films, binary organic thin films (BOTF) allows for novel characteristics and specialized features to handle more demanding tasks. Due to the complex intermolecular interactions in BOTF, various microscopic phases with different morphological and electronic properties may be formed and this information is difficult to extract through conventional bulk measurements.
Organic thin films can be readily …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Solution processed thin film photovoltaic devices are one of the most promising renewable energy sources. Organic solar cells have been intensively studied due to their advantages of light-weight, flexibility and low-cost materials and manufacturing. The organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have recently shown great potential application in solar cells. The PCE increased dramatically from 3.8% in 2009 to a certified efficiency of 20.1% in 2014. In this dissertation, we focus on the efficiency enhancement for solution processed organic and organic-inorganic solar cells.
In Chapter 2, I demonstrated that the crystallinity of the ferroelectric polymer P(VDF-TrFE) at the organic active layer/ electrode …

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) enable a range of applications such as data transmission, trace sensing, atomic clocks, and optical mice. For many of these applications, the output power and beam quality are both critical (i.e. high output power with good beam quality is desired). Multi-mode VCSELs offer much higher power than single-mode devices, but this comes at the expense of lower beam quality. Directly observing the resolved mode structure of multi-mode VCSELs would enable engineers to better understand the underlying physics and help them to develop multi-mode devices with improved beam quality. In this work, a low-cost, high-resolution (<3 >pm) …3>
Minimizing Sheet Resistance Of Organic Photovoltaic Cell Top Contact Electrode Layer: Silver Nanowire Concentration Vs. Conductive Polymer Doping Concentration, Caitlyn Cook
Materials Engineering
The top contact electrode layers of nine organic photovoltaic cells were prepared with two varying factors: three Silver nanowire (AgNW) densities deposited on a conductive polymer doped with three concentrations. Silver’s low sheet resistance of 20-Ω/sq is hypothesized to lower the sheet resistance of the anode layer and thus enhance the overall efficiency of the cell. Four-point probe measurements indicated that increasing AgNW density in the top contact electrode layer of an organic photovoltaic cell significantly reduces sheet resistance from 52.2k-Ω/sq to 18.0 Ω/sq. Although an increase in doping concentration of the conductive polymer reduced sheet resistance in low AgNW …
Effect Of Surfactant Architecture On Conformational Transitions Of Conjugated Polyelectrolytes, Greg A. Braggin
Effect Of Surfactant Architecture On Conformational Transitions Of Conjugated Polyelectrolytes, Greg A. Braggin
Master's Theses
Water soluble conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs), which fall under the category of conductive polymers, possess numerous advantages over other conductive materials for the fabrication of electronic devices. Namely, the processing of water soluble conjugated polyelectrolytes into thin film electronic devices is much less costly as compared to the processing of inorganic materials. Moreover, the handling of conjugated polyelectrolytes can be performed in a much more environmentally friendly manner than in the processing of other conjugated polymers because conjugated polyelectrolytes are water soluble, whereas other polymers will only dissolve in toxic organic solvents. The processing of electronic devices containing inorganic constituents such …

Photocatalytic Mineralization Of Phenol On Fluidized Titanium Oxide-Coated Silica Gel, Guillermo J. Rincon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A bench-scale tubular reactor with recirculation was built in order to study the efficiency of the photocatalytic oxidation of phenol on fluidized titanium oxide-coated silica gel beads. A UV-C lamp placed along the central vertical axes of the reactor was used as source of photons. A bed of silica gel beads was fluidized by means of fluid recirculation and forced to follow upward helical flow around the lamp. Anatase was successfully synthetized on silica gel particles of average diameters 224, 357 and 461 µm, as confirmed by scanning electron micrographs, through a sol-gel technique using a titanium (iv)isopropoxide / hydrochloric …

Variability In The Fabrication Process Of Bivo4 Photoanodes, Lauren M. Phillips
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Hydrogen gas produced from the photoelectrochemical (PEC) decomposition of water, using sunlight as an energy source, is a promising approach for sustainable fuel production. This decomposition of water is also called artificial photosynthesis. A device that accomplished this process is sometimes call an artificial leaf, which mimics nature inasmuch as it stores solar energy as a chemical fuel (e.g., hydrogen) by splitting water, in this way imitating natural photosynthesis. In 2009, Dr. Keith Holland and Dr. David Lawrence of James Madison University (JMU) initiated a research program to investigate materials for the photoelectrochemical decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen, …
Generalized Ellipsometry Analysis Of Anisotropic Nanoporous Media: Polymer-Infiltrated Nanocolumnar And Inverse-Column Polymeric Films, Dan Liang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Characterization of the structural and optical properties is a subject of significance for nanoporous material research. However, it remains a challenge to find non-destructive methods for investigating the anisotropy of porous thin films with three-dimensional nanostructures. In this thesis, a generalized ellipsometry (GE) analysis approach is employed to study two types of anisotropic nanoporous media: slanted columnar thin films (SCTFs) with polymer infiltration and inverse-SCTF polymeric films. The thesis presents the physical properties obtained from GE analysis, including porosity, columnar shape, principal optical constants, birefringence, etc.
The thesis reports on using a GE analysis approach, combining the homogeneous biaxial layer …

Interstitial Silicon Ions In Rutile Tio2 Crystals, Eric M. Golden, Nancy C. Giles, Shan Yang, Larry E. Halliburton
Faculty Publications
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to identify a new and unique photoactive silicon-related point defect in single crystals of rutile TiO2. The importance of this defect lies in its assignment to interstitial silicon ions and the unexpected establishment of silicon impurities as a major hole trap in TiO2. Principal g values of this new S=1/2 center are 1.9159, 1.9377, and 1.9668 with principal axes along the [¯110],[001], and [110] directions, respectively. Hyperfine structure in the EPR spectrum shows the unpaired spin interacting equally with two Ti nuclei and unequally with two Si nuclei. These silicon …
Towards The Perfect Optical Fiber, John Ballato
Towards The Perfect Optical Fiber, John Ballato
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Optical fibers are being used in an ever more diverse array of applications today. Many of these modern applications are in high-power and, particularly, high power-per-unit-bandwidth systems where optical nonlinearities historically have not limited overall performance. Today, however, nominally weak effects, such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), are restricting continued scaling to higher optical powers. To address these limitations, the optical fiber industry has focused on fiber geometry-related solutions such as large mode area (LMA) designs. However, since all linear and nonlinear optical phenomena are fundamentally materials-based in origin, this paper identifies material solutions to present and future performance limitations …

Theoretical Investigation Of Stabilities And Optical Properties Of Si12C12 Clusters, Xiaofeng F. Duan, Larry W. Burggraf
Faculty Publications
By sorting through hundreds of globally stable Si12C12 isomers using a potential surface search and using simulated annealing, we have identified low-energy structures. Unlike isomers knit together by Si–C bonds, the lowest energy isomers have segregated carbon and silicon regions that maximize stronger C–C bonding. Positing that charge separation between the carbon and silicon regions would produce interesting optical absorption in these cluster molecules, we used time-dependent density functional theory to compare the calculated optical properties of four isomers representing structural classes having different types of silicon and carbon segregation regions. Absorptions involving charge transfer between segregated …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Abstract
The purpose of this honors project is to construct and test temperature detectors, which can be used for the advancement of exercise devices, prosthetic sockets, or medical applications. Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) are an effective way to measure temperature due to the dependence of the RTD material’s resistance on temperature. The focus of this project was to develop an RTD for prosthetic socket or exercise applications, where the RTD is in close contact with the skin of the user. Generally, RTDs are constructed from platinum, copper, or nickel. However, metal RTDs have a tendency to be large and rigid, …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Attempts on the selective promotion of gallium nitride (GaN) growth were investigated by deploying laserassisted vibrational excitation of reactant molecules, which deposits energy selectively into specific molecules and activate the molecules towards the selected reaction pathways. Laser-assisted metal organic chemical vapor deposition (LMOCVD) of GaN was studied using a wavelength-tunable CO2 laser. The NH-wagging modes (υ2) of ammonia (NH3) precursor molecules are strongly infrared active and perfectly match the emission line of the CO2 laser at 9.219, 10.350, and 10.719 μm. On- and off-resonance excitations of molecules were performed via tuning the incident laser wavelengths at on-resonant wavelength 9.219 μm …

We designed, fabricated, and characterized a monolithically integrated optofluidic ring resonator laser that is mechanically, thermally, and chemically robust. The entire device, including the ring resonator channel and sample delivery microfluidics, was created in a block of fused-silica glass using a 3-dimensional femtosecond laser writing process. The gain medium, composed of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) dissolved in quinoline, was flowed through the ring resonator. Lasing was achieved at a pump threshold of approximately 15 μJ/mm2. Detailed analysis shows that the Q-factor of the optofluidic ring resonator is 3.3 × 104, which is limited by both solvent …

We report on the fabrication and characterization of a novel magnetophotonic structure designed as iron garnet based magneto-optical nanoresonator cavity constrained by two noble metal mirrors. Since the iron garnet layer requires annealing at high temperatures, the fabrication process can be rather challenging. Special approaches for the protection of metal layers against oxidation and morphological changes along with a special plasma-assisted polishing of the iron garnet layer surface were used to achieve a 10-fold enhancement of the Faraday rotation angle (up to 10.8°=μm) within a special resonance peak of 12 nm (FWHM) linewidth at a wavelength of 772 nm, in …

A photoinduced electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum in single crystals of Sn2P2S6 (SPS) is assigned to an electron trapped at a sulfur vacancy. These vacancies are unintentionally present in undoped SPS crystals and are expected to play an important role in the photorefractive behavior of the material. Nonparamagnetic sulfur vacancies are formed during the initial growth of the crystal. Subsequent illumination below 100 K with 442 nm laser light easily converts these vacancies to EPR-active defects. The resulting S = 1/2 spectrum shows well-resolved and nearly isotropic hyperfine interactions with two P ions and two Sn ions. Partially resolved interactions …
Solution Processed Cu(In,Ga)S2 Thin Film And Nanowire Photovoltaics, Johnthan Armstrong
Solution Processed Cu(In,Ga)S2 Thin Film And Nanowire Photovoltaics, Johnthan Armstrong
Theses and Dissertations
Solar energy conversion is a highly attractive process for clean and renewable power for the future. Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2/CdS/ZnO has proven itself to be a worthwhile photovoltaic combination achieving record efficiencies upwards of 20%. These record efficiencies have been obtained through vacuum-based approaches. However, the high cost of vacuum-based fabrication processes become a barrier to affordable solar cells as an energy source. As a result, solution-based approaches have become the focus of many studies which have achieved record efficiencies of 15%. These solution-based approaches have not matched up with the vacuum-based approaches. In this work, we investigate methods to improve the solution-based …

Performance Analysis Of A Hybrid Raman Optical Parametric Amplifier In The O- And E-Bands For Cwdm Pons, Sasanthi Peiris, Nicolas Madamopoulos, Neophytos A. Antoniades, Dwight Richards, Roger Dorsinville
Publications and Research
We describe a hybrid Raman-optical parametric amplifier (HROPA) operating at the O- and E-bands and designed for coarse wavelength division multiplexed (CWDM) passive optical networks (PONs). We present the mathematical model and simulation results for the optimization of this HROPA design. Our analysis shows that separating the two amplification processes allows for optimization of each one separately, e.g., proper selection of pump optical powers and wavelengths to achieve maximum gain bandwidth and low gain ripple. Furthermore, we show that the proper design of optical filters incorporated in the HROPA architecture can suppress idlers generated during the OPA process, as well …

Gesn Light-Emitting Devices, Yiyin Zhou
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Silicon based optoelectronic devices have been investigated for decades. However, due to the indirect band gap nature of Si and Ge, developing of efficient light-emitting source on Si is still a challenging topic. GeSn based optoelectronic devices have the great potential to overcome this deficiency for several reasons. By adding more fraction of Sn into Ge, GeSn band gap could be reduced. The narrowed band gap could be developed for near to mid infrared applications. The alloy can even become the direct band gap material with a large Sn composition (beyond 8%). This feature could enhance the light emission from …
Highly Transparent, Self-Cleaning, And Antireflective Nanoparticle Coatings, Corey Seth Thompson
Highly Transparent, Self-Cleaning, And Antireflective Nanoparticle Coatings, Corey Seth Thompson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Current solar panel technologies require a sheet of glass to serve as both mechanical support and to protect the cells from the environment. The reflection from the glass sheet can reflect up to 8% of the incident light, reducing the power output of the panel. Antireflective coatings can be used to allow more light to enter the panel to be converted into usable electricity. However, no solid thin film materials exhibit a low enough index of refraction to serve as antireflective coatings for common solar glass. The main goal of this research was to investigate the self-cleaning, antifogging, and antireflective …

Development Of A High Precision Quantum Dot Synthesis Method Utilizing A Microfluidic Reactor And In-Line Fluorescence Flow Cell, William Henry Lafferty
Master's Theses
Quantum dots show great potential for use as spectral converters in solar cells, lighting applications, and biological imaging. These applications require precise control of quantum dot size to maximize performance. The quality, size, and fluorescence of quantum dots depend on parameters that are difficult to control using traditional batch synthesis processes. An alternative, high precision process was developed for the synthesis of cadmium-selenide quantum dots using a microfluidic reactor and fluorescence flow cell. The process required creating separate cadmium and selenium precursors that were then mixed in a nitrogen environment at 17°C. Using an NE-300® syringe pump, the solution …

Effects Of Thermal Boundary Conditions During Finite Element Modeling Of Physical Vapor Transport, Wade Luhman
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Physical vapor transport (PVT) is a material processing method commonly used to produce different types of semiconductor materials. Computer modeling of PVT is important to understand the fundamentals of the processing method. Due to the large amount of computer processing power and storage needed to solve the computer models many of the previously solved simulations have been simplified to efficiently utilize computer usage. Previous PVT computer simulations of mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2) have assumed constant temperature profiles on the source and crystal substrate for simplicity. These simulations were performed using the FIDAP computational fluid dynamics software package. In this research the …

Single Cuo Nanowires Electrical Properties And Application On Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting, Junnan Wu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Charge transport in single crystal, p type copper oxide (CuO) nanowires (NWs) was studied through temperature based (120 K – 400 K) current-voltage (I-V) measurements of 2-terminal single NW devices. Individual CuO NWs with an average diameter of 220 nm were attached to Au electrodes 2.5 µm apart, using a dielectrophoresis method. I-V curves showed a transition from linear behavior at low bias to strong power law dependence (I ~ Va) at high bias, which can be attributed to space charge limited current (SCLC) mechanism. At low electrical fields (< 0.89 × 103 V·cm-1), the number of …
Three Dimensional Transient Asymmetric Flowfields In Physical Vapor Transport, Joseph Dobmeier
Three Dimensional Transient Asymmetric Flowfields In Physical Vapor Transport, Joseph Dobmeier
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Physical Vapor Transport is a manufacturing process used to produce single crystals of semiconductor materials such as mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2). In the past this time-varying process has been studied with numerical simulation by considering three dimensional flow using an axi-symmetric two dimensional model or by restricting the simulation to asymmetric two dimensional flow and dropping the assumption of axi-symmetry from the model. It is generally agreed that neither of these methods accurately represent the true behavior of the process. The purpose of this research was to extend the asymmetric two dimensional model to three dimensions thereby obtaining a solution which …

Currently, over 50% of all energy generated in the US is lost as waste heat, and thermoelectric generators offer a promising means to recoup some of this energy, if their efficiency is improved. While organic thermoelectric materials lack the efficiency of their inorganic counterparts, they are composed of highly abundant resources and have low temperature processing conditions. Recently, a new class of redox-active polymers, radical polymers, has exhibited high electrical conductivity in an entirely amorphous medium. In addition, these radical polymers have a simple synthetic scheme and can be highly tunable to provide desired electrical properties. In this study, the …
