Discovering And Designing Novel Perovskite Photovoltaic Materials Via Machine Learning, Junyeong Ahn
Discovering And Designing Novel Perovskite Photovoltaic Materials Via Machine Learning, Junyeong Ahn
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Perovskite semiconductors are promising materials for high-efficiency photovoltaics due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties, emerging as a sustainable energy source through solar cell applications. Perovskites with the ABX₃ composition (A, B = metal or organic cations with varying oxidation states; X = chalcogen or halogen anions) have gained interest for their excellent phase stability and compositional tunability. However, combinatorial possibilities arising from the many choices of A, B, and X site species, and their respective mixing fractions, a large number of possible ABX₃ perovskites remain undiscovered. In this work, we used machine learning (ML) methods to design new stable and …

Quantitative, Photocurrent Multidimensional Coherent Spectroscopy, Adam Halaoui
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multidimensional coherent spectroscopy (MDCS) is a quickly growing field that has a lot of advantages over more conventional forms of spectroscopy. These advantages all come from the fact that MDCS allows us to get time resolved correlated emission and absorption spectra using very precisely chosen interactions between the density matrix and the excitation laser. MDCS spectra gives the researcher a lot of information that can be extracted purely through qualitative analysis. This is possible because state couplings are entirely separated on the spectra, and once we know how to read the data, we can see how carriers transport in the …

As more efficient and cost-effective photovoltaic (PV) architectures are developed, solar becomes an ever more competitive and viable replacement for fossil fuels. Full grid electrification necessitates the development of efficient, reliable, cost-effective technologies - and there is room for many different kinds of PV in this expanding market. The practical challenges and constraints of terawatt PV production have brought scalability and durability into sharp scientific focus. From a materials perspective, there are commonalities in the materials questions and challenges across different PV technologies. Whereas most PV technology is referred to by the absorber layer - e.g. silicon, or perovskite solar …

As perovskite solar cell efficiencies have risen rapidly, practical constraints have made durability a critical concern. Whereas much attention has been paid to the development of the perovskite absorber layer, the charge transport layers can also be engineered to better the performance and stability of the device. This work uses the molecular modifier bromopropyltrimethoxysilane (BPTMS) to alter the interface between indium tin oxide (ITO, a common thin film solar cell transparent electrode) and methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3, a common perovskite absorber) to improve the morphology and stability of the perovskite absorber film. The substrate, molecular modifier, and perovskite film were …

Performance And Economics Of Solar Inverters And Module Level Power Electronics In A 1 Mw Photovoltaic System, Maxwell Criswell
Performance And Economics Of Solar Inverters And Module Level Power Electronics In A 1 Mw Photovoltaic System, Maxwell Criswell
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Photovoltaic solar panels convert sunlight to electricity in the form of direct current; therefore, a necessary component of every photovoltaic system is an inverter to convert the electricity to usable alternating current. There are various commercially available inverter technologies manufactured today such as microinverters, string inverters, and central inverters, as well as module level power electronic devices such as DC optimizers that are capable of improving system performance in string and central inverter systems. This thesis compares the performance and economics of five different inverter and module level power electronic systems through model simulation using Helioscope software. The five alternatives …

Plasmonic Metamaterials: Physical Background And Some Technological Applications, Benjamin G. Schmidt
Senior Honors Theses
New technological frontiers appear every year, and few are as intriguing as the field of plasmonic metamaterials (PMMs). These uniquely designed materials use coherent electron oscillations to accomplish an astonishing array of tasks, and they present diverse opportunities in many scientific fields.
This paper consists of an explanation of the scientific background of PMMs and some technological applications of these fascinating materials. The physics section addresses the foundational concepts necessary to understand the operation of PMMs, while the technology section addresses various applications, like precise biological and chemical sensors, cloaking devices for several frequency ranges, nanoscale photovoltaics, experimental optical computing …

Increasing Solar Energy Conversion Efficiency In Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Photovoltaic Devices With Plasmonic Perfect Meta – Absorbers, Jephias Gwamuri
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Solar photovoltaic (PV) devices are an established, technically-viable and sustainable solution to society’s energy needs, however, in order to reach mass deployment at the terawatt scale, further decreases in the levelized cost of electricity from solar are needed. This can be accomplished with thin-film PV technologies by increasing the conversion efficiency using sophisticated light management methods. This ensures absorption of the entire solar spectrum, while reducing semiconductor absorber layer thicknesses, which reduces deposition time, material use, embodied energy and greenhouse gas emissions, and economic costs. Recent advances in optics, particularly in plasmonics and nanophotonics provide new theoretical methods to improve …
Solution Processed Cu(In,Ga)S2 Thin Film And Nanowire Photovoltaics, Johnthan Armstrong
Solution Processed Cu(In,Ga)S2 Thin Film And Nanowire Photovoltaics, Johnthan Armstrong
Theses and Dissertations
Solar energy conversion is a highly attractive process for clean and renewable power for the future. Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2/CdS/ZnO has proven itself to be a worthwhile photovoltaic combination achieving record efficiencies upwards of 20%. These record efficiencies have been obtained through vacuum-based approaches. However, the high cost of vacuum-based fabrication processes become a barrier to affordable solar cells as an energy source. As a result, solution-based approaches have become the focus of many studies which have achieved record efficiencies of 15%. These solution-based approaches have not matched up with the vacuum-based approaches. In this work, we investigate methods to improve the solution-based …
Fabrication Of Vertical Silicon Nanowires Through Metal Assisted Deposition, Matthew Garett Young
Fabrication Of Vertical Silicon Nanowires Through Metal Assisted Deposition, Matthew Garett Young
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Controlled and ordered growth of Si nanowires through a low temperature fabrication method compatible with CMOS processing lines is a highly desirable replacement to future electronic fabrication technologies as well as a candidate for a low cost route to inexpensive photovoltaics. This stems from the fact that traditional CMOS based electronics are hitting physical barriers that are slowing the Moore's Law trend as well as the demand for an inexpensive solar cell technology that can obtain grid parity. A fractional factorial growth study is presented that compares the growth of Au and Al catalyzed Si nanowires at temperatures ranging from …
