First Principles Materials Discovery And Design For Photovoltaic And Solar Thermal Alloys Using High Throughput Methods, Andrew Pike
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Materials selection has been a challenge since the dawn of time. With the advent of computational methods and high throughput databases, materials can be discovered and assessed before they are even synthesized. In this thesis I will discuss my work towards designing new materials for clean energy uses, especially alloys which have been underexplored from computational methods. To begin, I present a case study explaining the synthesis of the Yb14ZnSb11 thermoelectric material. Next, I explore the class of AM2Pn2 Zintl materials. From the previously identified BaCd2P2, it is suspected that …
Improving The Figure Of Merit In Iron-Vanadium-Aluminium Thermoelectric Alloy System Guided By Computational Modeling, Tao Fang
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Thermoelectric materials can convert a thermal gradient to electricity. Currently, commercialized Bi2Te3 is brittle and expensive, which restricts the usage of this material. Compared to other thermoelectric materials, Fe2VAl is cost-effective, stable and more robust mechanically. However, the figure of merit (zT) had been much lower than Bi2Te3. In this thesis, our main goal is to improve the figure of merit in Fe2VAl system guided by computational modeling. We will start the discussion by presenting the Ge doped Fe2VAl sample with record thermoelectric figure of merit value. …
Germanium-Tin On Silicon For Integrated Photonics And Integrated Quantum Materials, Shang Liu
Germanium-Tin On Silicon For Integrated Photonics And Integrated Quantum Materials, Shang Liu
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Group IV GeSn alloys are attracting attention due to their compatibility with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process. On one hand, Ge-rich GeSn alloys with a tunable direct bandgap are well-suited to infrared (IR) photonic applications such as image sensors. On the other hand, Sn-rich GeSn alloys in diamond cubic α phase are topological quantum materials (TQM) holding potential for important quantum applications. However, directly growing GeSn on Si remains challenging due to the lattice mismatch. Regular epitaxial GeSn grown on a Ge buffer layer is not applicable to many photonic applications including CMOS image sensors (CIS) because the buffer layer …
Liquid Metal Printing Of Ultrathin Conductive Metal Oxides, Andrew B. Hamlin
Liquid Metal Printing Of Ultrathin Conductive Metal Oxides, Andrew B. Hamlin
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Widegap metal oxides are critical semiconducting materials in solar power generation, transparent electronics and displays. Ultrathin versions of these materials are poised to be at the forefront of next generation technology due to their high transparency, flexibility, and the capacity to advantageously use backchannel sensitivity and quantum confinement. Liquid metal printing is a novel deposition technique that fundamentally yields ultrathin oxide materials by exfoliating the self-limited oxide that exists on molten metals at low temperatures. Our work involves the invention of novel liquid metal printing techniques to deposit semiconducting 2D metal oxides with precise electrostatic properties. We investigate the electronic …
Spinel Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticle-Pigmented Solar Selective Coatings With High Thermal Efficiency And High-Temperature Thermal Stability In Air, Can Xu
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
This thesis explores spinel-structure transition metal oxide nanoparticle pigmented solar selective coatings with high thermal efficiency (>90%) and high-temperature (~750 ºC) thermodynamic stability via cost-effective and facile fabrication methods. Compared to the preliminary work, we reduce the emittance loss by selecting silicones with a lower emittance loss as the matrix. We further move from purchasing simple commercial oxide nanoparticles to systematically designing and synthesizing spinel-structure based three-transition-metal-incorporated oxide nanoparticles for a better optical response of nanoparticle pigmented coatings. Nanoparticles of three systems are studied, including Ni-Mn-Fe oxide, Cu-Mn-Fe oxide, and Cu-Mn-Cr oxide systems. Among, Cu-Mn-Cr oxide nanoparticle pigmented silicone …
