Optical Fiber Tip Micro Anemometer, Jeremiah C. Williams, Hengky Chandrahalim Apr 2023

Optical Fiber Tip Micro Anemometer, Jeremiah C. Williams, Hengky Chandrahalim

AFIT Patents

A passive microscopic flow sensor includes a three-dimensional microscopic optical structure formed on a cleaved tip of an optical fiber. The three-dimensional microscopic optical structure includes a post attached off-center to and extending longitudinally from the cleaved tip of the optical fiber. A rotor of the three-dimensional microscopic optical structure is received for rotation on the post. The rotor has more than one blade. Each blade has a reflective undersurface that reflects a light signal back through the optical fiber when center aligned with the optical fiber, the blades of the rotor shaped to rotate at a rate related to …

Gravity-Drawing Flexible Silicone Filaments As Fiber Optics And Model Foldamers, Katherine Snell Jan 2020

Gravity-Drawing Flexible Silicone Filaments As Fiber Optics And Model Foldamers, Katherine Snell

CMC Senior Theses

Here, we present a method of gravity-drawing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) silicone fibers with application as fiber optics and as model foldamers. Beginning as a viscous liquid, PDMS is cured using heat until its measured viscosity reaches 4000 mPa•s. The semi-cured elastomer is then extruded through a tube furnace to produce thin (diameters on the order of hundred micrometers) filaments with scalable lengths. PDMS is biocompatible, gas-permeable, flexible, and hydrophobic. Additionally, the PDMS surface hydrophobicity can be modified via UV exposure, O2 plasma, and corona discharge. We demonstrate the patternibility (i.e patterns of hydrophobicity) of PDMS fibers, adding complexity to potential foldamer …

The Effect Of Gamma Radiation On Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors When Used As Radiation Dosimeters, Des Baccini Jan 2013

The Effect Of Gamma Radiation On Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors When Used As Radiation Dosimeters, Des Baccini

Theses : Honours

The effects of Gamma Radiation on Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBGs), when used as a radiation dosimeter, was proposed. The focus of this study centred on the FBG performance, and in particular the Bragg Wavelength Shift (BWS) whilst being exposed to ionizing radiation. Current research suggests that certain types of fibres manufactured by varying methods produce different results. The different responses to exposure from gamma irradiation between Germanium (Ge) doped optical fibres, with and without Hydrogen loading, along with the standard SMF-28 fibre with Hydrogen, were used and results noted and compared to previous work. The FBG’s in each fibre were …

Inductively Coupled Plasma Dry Etching Process On Planar Lightwave Circuit Fabrication., Chuah Khoon Seah Jan 2010

Inductively Coupled Plasma Dry Etching Process On Planar Lightwave Circuit Fabrication., Chuah Khoon Seah

Student Works (2010-2019)

The main objective of this project is to master state-of-the-art techniques and knowledge in silica etching in order to achieve high quality waveguide circuit on Planar Lightwave Circuit devices. Another objective is to optimize the clean room research strength, surface characterization, microscopy techniques and similar semiconductor manufacturing processes.Initially, these processes were conducted with wet etching method that utilized diluted hydrofluoric acid (HF) and buffered oxide etch (BOE). Several problems arising such as mask peel-off, poor sidewall profile and defect waveguide channel during the pattern transfer process due to its’ isotropic nature. Alternatively, dry etching method was conducted via Inductively Coupled …

Passive Multiple Beam Combination In Optical Fibers Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering, Kirk C. Brown Mar 2006

Passive Multiple Beam Combination In Optical Fibers Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering, Kirk C. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Many active methods of scaling laser brightness have been demonstrated in recent years. The goal of this research was to demonstrate the feasibility of passively combining multiple laser beams using Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) in a long multimode optical fiber. This method of combination employed a “Gatling gun” fiber array that allowed several collimated beams to be focused by a lens into an optical fiber. The retroreflected Stokes beam is passed through the center of the beam combiner for analysis. In addition to experimental methodology and equipment used, the theoretical and historical background of SBS in optical fibers is provided. …

Characteristics Of Two-Dimensional Triangular And Three-Dimensional Face-Centered-Cubic Photonic Crystals, Jeffery D. Clark Mar 2006

Characteristics Of Two-Dimensional Triangular And Three-Dimensional Face-Centered-Cubic Photonic Crystals, Jeffery D. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The fabrication of photonic crystals (PhC) with photonic band gaps (PBG) in the visible range is a difficult task due to the small structural feature sizes of the PhC. The particular type of PhC examined is a two-dimensional (2-D) triangular structure with a PBG designed for visible wavelengths with applications in visible integrated photonic systems. This work examines the processes involved and viability of fabricating 2-D triangular PhC's by a variety of techniques: focused ion beam, electron lithography and holographic photo-polymerization/lithography. The design of the PhC was based on a program created to display gap maps for triangular structures. The …

Influence Of Embedded Optical Fibers On Compressive Strength Of Advanced Composites, Stefan B. Dosedel Dec 1993

Influence Of Embedded Optical Fibers On Compressive Strength Of Advanced Composites, Stefan B. Dosedel

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of embedding optical fibers into advanced composite materials. This combination was meant to simulate 'smart structures' that have been shown to sense several different variables in the composite including strain, temperature, and damage. A laminate orientation taken from an existing aircraft structure was used to fabricate sixteen groups of specimens which were subjected to compression testing in an IITRI fixture to determine the ultimate compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. Ten of these groups were fabricated with optical fibers while the other six were control groups and contained no optical fibers. This study showed that …

Light Injection From An Active Cladding To The Core Of A Fiber Optic Fluorosensor, Alvin Leon Bryant Jul 1993

Light Injection From An Active Cladding To The Core Of A Fiber Optic Fluorosensor, Alvin Leon Bryant

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A fluorosensor works on the basis of light injection from the clad into the core of an optical fiber. The sensitivity of such a sensor depends on the efficiency of light injection. Conditions necessary for a high injection efficiency are experimentally determined. The refractive index difference between the core and the clad, ncore -nclad, must be maximized to achieve a high injection efficiency. Since an air clad has the least refractive index, a bare core fiber will have a maximum efficiency. Standard optical fibers used for communication employ a minimum value for ncore -nclad, in order …

Phase Conjugation In Optical Fiber Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering With Feedback From A Barium Titanate Crystal, Patrick R. Emmert Dec 1992

Phase Conjugation In Optical Fiber Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering With Feedback From A Barium Titanate Crystal, Patrick R. Emmert

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis was to obtain phase conjugation in multi-mode optical fiber via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) with the aid of a barium titanate crystal which formed a phase conjugate cavity for the Stokes beam. SBS was demonstrated but the SBS threshold was unaffected by the presence of the barium titanate crystal and no evidence for the presence of phase conjugation in the optical fiber was obtained.
